Re: Paul Sykes... where is he now?...
He lived about 300 yards from me growing up. Scary man. Many times he would come in the local boozer and mash us.
Lots of rumours about what he got up to in prison, dragging young lads into his cell and ruining them. Couldn´t handle the booze at all. Was always arseholed late on in life.
Physical specimen though, he had massive hands, like shovels.
Noncing is not on and its no secret he liked young girls (and boys). Got we he deserved in the end.

There's still a few knobheads here and there but the main thing that would put you off living there now are the students and all that goes with that. Nowhere in Manchester is that bad really. There's small pockets of deprivation and that does bring a few hard kids but overall it's a great and safe place to live.
It's got the poorest health and some of the highest deprivation rates in the country. It also consistently scores in the top five cities in Britain for violent crime. It has the widest gap in educational attainment between rich and poor.
The best part of it is Piccadilly station where you can get a train over the Pennines out of the place.
Manchester = Britain's most overrated city.

Ive only ever been to Manchester a few times for boxing events really. Apart from being threatened once by a junkie who threatened to stab me i found it ok. Never explored outside of the city centre so cant comment on that but the occasions ive been i found it like any city centre on a saturday night, very similar to Leeds really.

I lived in Manchester for a few years in the nineties and I never really liked it. One of the great things about it is the Middle Eastern/Indian food and it is better now than it has ever been. When I went to get my visa from the Chinese consulate in Rusholme, there was an excellent Malaysian restaurant (which is neither Middle Eastern or Indian of course...)I went to but the rest of it isn't worth two bob - personally speaking.mercman wrote: ↑24 Jan 2021, 06:01It's nothing to be jealous (or proud) of, I can assure you.CaptainSpacerod wrote: ↑23 Jan 2021, 20:40Got any statistics from official sources to back up your outlandish statements or just an unhealthy jealousy of a great city ?mercman wrote: ↑28 Nov 2020, 14:18

Those MEN stories, reporting on studies commissioned by the Department for Local Government and the Inequalities in Health Alliance, obviously all made up. Not based on official sources.
Danny Dorling, Halford Mackinder Professor of Geography at Oxford University, he's obviously just making stuff up as well.
So, over to you. Perhaps you'd like to provide data from the International Centre for Mancunian Studies you are involved with. Data which refutes all this evidence and demonstrates what a safe, healthy, happy place Manchester is.

Re: Paul Sykes... where is he now?...
As a boxer Paul Sykes overachieved. He was a domestic heavyweight who got to fight for the British title at a time when the division was quite weak. Many better men never got the chance. John L Gardener, who wasn't one of our better champions took him to the cleaners. Man versus boy. I do not understand this obsession with Sykes. He was a poor contender for such a worthy title. If he wasn't so well known for being such a so-called "hard man" then he would be long forgotten. Neil Malpass was just as hard and who remembers him?
Like the Kray twins he has a reputation far beyond his fistic prowess. Only one of the Krays was any good in the ring and that was Charlie.
Paul Sykes = a poor quality fighter and a man best forgotten. Far better heavyweights than him deserve to be remembered more than he does.

Re: Paul Sykes... where is he now?...
My sort of stepsister bought a new build place in Salford: proper nice big house and would cost you fortunes down South. I remember seeing photos of it and it wasn't much more than my little 2 bed but it looked fornicating massive, all mod cons. I did say to my Mum's other half "it IS in Salford, though. Isn't that supposed to be quite rough?" (Only ever visited Manchester 4 or 5 times, never really liked it but it might just have been where I went. Just like London I suppose.)
Anyway they lasted less than 6 months before they had to move. The locals saw them off. Not physically, like they were directly threatened, but they just couldn't stand what my stepsister described as "scumbags" next door ruining her life.
For context, she grew up in Paisley!
Re: Paul Sykes... where is he now?...
I just think with these guys they were local bogeymen and a lot of legend sprung up around them. I remember being fascinated when told stories about particular nutters where I grew up and eventually ended up encountering them. They would probably have been shit in the ring but you weren't in the ring with them, were you? I remember one of my 'famous' local psychopaths trying to start a fight with everybody who crossed his path in the park one summer, giving me daggers as I sat with my bird and her mates and getting in the face of everyone who crossed his path. I knew who he was so I just kept my head down. Some Eastern European lads he started abusing gave some verbal back to him but when he started racially abusing them some of the black lads he was with (another notorious family from the town) took umbrage with the racism element and he ended up having a fight with his own mates where he glassed one of the black lads in the eye.prewarboxing wrote: ↑25 Jan 2021, 17:28 As a boxer Paul Sykes overachieved. He's in prison now for murder after beating somebody to death over a kebab.
It's what people do and the stories that get told about them that get exaggerated or whatever, people are naturally inclined to be interested in that sort of thing I suppose.
