About fifty people witnessed the assault, but only Doyle and Donnelly were willing to testify.[3] Most were too afraid of Byrne and his gang to testify.[3]

Sentence activated
When he was brought before the court his suspended sentence was activated and he was jailed for the first time on 23 May 2000.[3]

Witness intimidation
Byrne tried to intimidate Doyle on several occasions.[3] First he offered €50,000 to her to not testify, with a threat to kill her if she testified.[3] She refused to take the bribe.[3]

Further threats forced her to leave her home after it was shot at.[3] There was a plot to murder her - an INLA gunman was asked to kill her to prevent her testimony.[3]

She lived in B&Bs and hotel accommodation under an alias and was virtually penniless.[3] She was not included in a witness protection programme.[4]

After she testified she was badly injured in an assault in the corridors of the Four Courts.[3][4]

Her testimony was a major factor in Byrne's conviction and two years were added to the four year sentence which after remission amounted to four and a half years.[3] The sentences were initially to run concurrently but the Court of Appeals decided they should run consecutively.[4]

Indeed there are socioeconomic issues such as poverty that need to be addressed overall, but these guys have been linked to 30 murders in the last five years, there have been paramilitaries in the Irish troubles who didn't murder that many people, if getting rid of the Kinahans kills Irish boxing then that says more about Irish boxing doesn't it?

totaly get what ur saying but it aint that simple though , will the irish goverment pump money in to boxing doubt it,also before the paramilitaries there was something like a murder rate of 10 people in ireland but that taboo was broken with the paramilitaries, we have all ways had reblion in ireland were children of a fighting race , days of Charles Haughey i mean decent men but lined there own pockets , i hate the way gafs in ireland are full of murders i had aunts not wanting to go out after 2pm disgraceful, buts lets not forget the Tenement housing terrible living standards where were goverment then , iam not biggin any one up here , i just hate that it takes certain types of people to gain power before the goverment care , it tells me they dont care about the working people of ireland

Oh I'm not bigging up any of the governments, like I said, they protect Mr.Big, an obvious informer, but Jennifer Doyle couldn't be put into a witness protection programme after having the temerity to refuse a bribe from the guy who beat her boyfriend senseless with a baseball bat for nothing, had her house shot at and an assassin hired to kill her, and was assaulted right after she testified IN COURT, only to get two measely years added on to the sentence. Had she known that, she might have taken the 50 k after all

This woman had the balls to refuse dirty money, but a lot of these big brave macho men won't. And I even understand young up and coming boxers grabbing the money with both hands, its very VERY tempting, but the older lads should know better

I always thought that drugs should be legalized. Once you do that you completely take away that revenue from the gangs. It's not like it's hard to get the likes of cocaine or heroin if you want to get it anyway.

If legalized you won't eradicate the criminal gangs at all, the black market will still exist as it does in alcohol and cigarettes, which are both legal. The criminals will be able to provide cheaper and stronger drugs to customers than the legal operators can.

Get over to Dublin and into some of the estates there. They are ruined by drugs.
