Maxim was knocked out cold for sure.He was unconscious on the canvas not moving a muscle and there was concern that he was seriously hurt. The promoter was so anxious that he suffered a heart attack. The commission doctor then had to abandon Joey to tend for the commissioner.Maxim commented afterwards three weeks later after winning a decisive decision in ten with Sheppard in the rematch.He still had a concussion on his brain.
"A foolish thing,"he admitted.If they had had the kinds of physical examinations that we have today(1990) they would have never let me fight.But I was a cocky kid and not any smarter than I should have been.it never occurred to me to be afraid of Sheppard."
