Even by Eubank's standards that is a quite remarkable stretching of the truth. The idea that him fighting in front a few hundred people in Dubai Tennis Stadium over 20 years ago somehow paved the way for AJ's mega-deal in Saudi is absolutely laughable.
🇪🇬 EGYPT 96, in front of the Sheikhs promoting his own show
All you're doing is re-enforcing my point. His presence did absolutely nothing to pave the way for boxing in the region in any way, shape or form, let alone help set the scene for AJ's deal. I can tell you categorically that his flop in Dubai ensured the opposite, as promoters realized it wasn't a viable market.

By the way, the ruling Sheikhs are in the Gulf, not in Egypt, so you're just highlighting your lack of knowledge of the region.

Wasn't Eubank the first to sign a lucrative long term fight contract ( 10 fights i think) with a major broadcaster?

He took stick for it as some of the opponents were erm...less than stellar. That's why he was able to fight every two
or three months.

So revolutionary on that front but not Saudi.

Think it was eight fights in 12 months, starting in London against Amaral and was supposed to take in Seiller in Paris, Malinga in South Africa, Wharton at Elland Road, Close in Belfast again, Nardiello in Rome, Benn again at Wembley and ending with Toney in July 95.

Nothing went to plan.

Eight in 12 months. Eubank was never out of the gym, ever.

Losing to Collins ruined it! It was supposed to be a world tour! I imagine not fulfilling the deal had an impact on the money but I don't know exactly by how.

That was it. Just the very nature of the contract told us the route Eubank intended to take. So, a trailblazer
on that front.

I think the next to get a similar deal was Audley with the bbc. And the rest is history.

Yeah Eubank had to keep winning but still made £600,000 in each of the two fights between the two Collins fights, that both lasted 30 seconds, in 1995.

Also it was Ray Close failing a brain scan why the Collins fight happened in the first place, Eubank-Close III was set for two weeks before Benn-McClellan in Belfast but got cancelled because of the aforementioned. Hearn quickly made Eubank-Collins (Rep of Ireland) set for St Paddy's Weekend for five weeks after the original Close mandatory date.

Eubank in essence then had a whole wasted camp, then doubled up for Collins fight. With no respite since after Berlin a year before. Madness. And he took in South Africa during that too, high altitude down under.

I didn't have the ego for Sin City when I was boxing. Sun City most certainly, being the soil of my idol Mandela - truth, integrity, dignity. Not ego. Bringing money and interest to South Africa. Any way I can help, I'm going to.
That doesn't sound like Eubank at all. Are you sure he didn't say "the soil of Mandela, whose idol I was"?

coghaugen11 wrote: 07 Jul 2020, 22:10
I suggested part of the Berlin Wall be donated to Mandela in South Africa, and later that year it was.

He lost the first one to an obscure Brazilian but they gave him the verdict.

I remember BN rubbishing the fight beforehand, a headline of Schommer Holiday rings a bell!

Who could have known Eubank would have been so bad that night.

Schommer beat him by seven rounds. Funny, Eubank refuses to admit to himself that it was due to his obscene weight-making (this time at altitude) over there and instead portrays Schommer as a boxing super-master.

Sounds like one of Harry Mullan's rants. I remember him slagging off the Richie Woodhall-Glenn Catley match in 1998, labelling it a disgrace and that Catley had absolutely no chance. Harry was learning the hard way that the game had changed by the 1990s and all the old boxing commandments were dead in the water.

The greats dared to be great. They absorbed critique, pain, suffering and rather than stop or cower away in a corner they stood tall and carried on until they actually got respect and could walk away with their head high and have no need or reason or ego to come back for a second taste.

Exactly. He literally had people elevated into the rankings. When you’re told you can fight anyone for that money it’s obvious you’re going to not fight the best.
