Was he right to quit: Yes, he couldn't go on and it was his call and he made it - Max Baer (after his fight with Joe Louis) said something along the lines of that because someone pays 20 dollars for a ringside seat doesn't entitle them to a public execution.

Does he get any sympathy from me: Absolutely not. There's nothing wrong with quitting and if he had been a proper adult, he could have had a few post fight words to say he was beaten by the better man and apologise for his words - especially about Dubois - if it makes him into a better human being, then his corner retirement loss would have been the best lesson for him ever.
Nice post. :TU:
x2

He quit. He was correct to do so. Mark Tibbs saw it and called it off.

Understand all of the lack of sympathy for him. I think he will be happy with the purse and go on being exactly who he is in retirement. Hopefully he shows some real humility and apologize for all the unnecessary nonsense over the years.

Nice post. :TU:
I have worked out that is the one thing that is really bugging me oogs - is the fact that despite his mouth fornicating working fine (why is how we knew he quit...) he has yet to say he was beaten by the better man and show some humility, in fact, he might have bailed (pending on medical reports/xrays) because he didn't want to do exactly this (or get KO'd in front of the planet of course which was coming in that next round) like the child that he most certainly is.

If he thinks he is just going to brazen it out once he recovers then he can say goodbye to his boxing career in the UK (not that he was a proper main eventer anyway...) he'll get booed to fornicate.
Here's his quote about DDD:
“If my two eye sockets were broken, my jaw was broken, my teeth were out, my nose was smashed, my brain was beaten, I was not stopping until I was knocked out or worse. I don’t agree with a man taking the knee and letting the ref count him out.”
And now as you said, he has nothing to say. F him!
I'm sure most fighters think the same until it happens to them

Yup, Andrade pretty much made this comment in an interview post fight. He was like I don't know, my face is fine. Then he went on to say he would have fought on and either you have quit in you or you don't and that he himself was a warrior. I'm paraphrasing, but it was words to that effect.

saunders was never winning it anyway , his punches were not troubling canelo yet canelo was pounding real heavy body and head shots that were breaking him down .
it was a surprise that he made it to the 2nd half of the fight but then as canelo stepped up the pace he crumpled like the bag of shite he really is .

Yes

but 99% of the worlds population would’ve done the same, because when you’re thinking I could be blinded here, and your face is getting caved in...well…...

Knowing he had no fire power to hold off the Mexican I was thinking beforehand in the weeks leading up, he’s going to have to really tough it out at some point, and he’s going to feel like quitting, but with all the shite he’s talked he just can’t do that, I was thinking Tyson Fury should have a quiet word beforehand, about that is the last thing you can do, but that’s a tough thing to talk about when you’re sure you are gonna win.

But when your face gets broken like that, the options suddenly disappear from the table.

Nowhere near 99% would’ve quit. Many people are tough and stubborn - Bill isn’t one of them.

You're right, most people wouldn't - I wouldn't but now Billy Joe Saunders knows the answer to this too - he found out something about himself on Saturday night - he probably did believe the 'I would fight through two broken cheekbones, you would have to carry me out of that ring blah blah blah' nothing wrong with self-preservation - it has been the cornerstone of the human race since we first evolved.

We've heard him apologise many times for being a total shitebag,he had this coming but was too stupid to realise. He claimed the whole country was behind him  obviously has absolutely no idea they were watching to see him get his swede panned in.I've disliked many fighters and enjoyed it when they got beat but this is on a different level, best result of the year without a doubt.

I enjoyed the fight, which went pretty much how I thought it would. Gave BJS two rounds. I thought Canelo actually slipped more punches than Saunders and I saw a huge gulf in class. Terrible, gassed technique from Saunders which led to the shot.

If he continued to box with that injury, he'd be a fornicating idiot.

If a trainer let him go out for the 9th with that injury, they'd be negilgent.

What I don't understand is the 'mystery' regarding who made the (right) decision.

BJS claims he doesn't care what people think. Why, then, doesn't he grow up and just say "I couldn't continue with that injury", which was obviously the case. Why does he have to shift the responsibility to his trainer(s)? Because of what he said about Dubois?

Because he's a childish arsehole who can't accept responsibility. He's an arsehole for saying what he said about Dubois, having never experienced it. He's an arsehole for the countless 'pranks' he's done out of the ring.

He's a six round fighter at that level. Has blown far too much smoke up his own arse. Ryder beat himn, for me, Akatov beat him, for me, and CEJ/Nick Blackwell gave him murders.

All true.

Canelo was playing with him like Floyd was with McGregor.

going back to my somewhat well-worn theme this is another common trait of the elite UK amateur when under pressure in the pro game, once they are too gassed to move their feet so much, or when they get trapped on the ropes or whatever, their panicked attempts at defensive manouvres often make them look somewhat like a fish flopping on its hook.

He quit at 1.30 of the 8th round. Literally threw one lazy jab in the last 90 seconds, which was countered, and spent the rest of the time holding/covering up and running away.

We did not see even the pretence of wanting to carry on, and he shook his head numerous times to whatever Ben Davidson was saying to him.

You only have to watch the Tibbs interviews to see that BJS body language left him no choice

Of course Saunders quit, with his mosquito punch power he was never really going to trouble Canelo, his best hope was to nick a points decision but that would never happen with the golden/ginger goose. I must say I suspect there is something of the Margacheato about Canelo, from a few years ago of not being able to really dent Matthew Hatton and being wobbled by Cotto's brother, he's now some kind of bone crushing damaging puncher, check the blighter's gloves/wraps I say.

The same thing crossed my mind post fight.. Suddenly, Canelo has 3G power, at higher weight classes. It would be entirely on brand for the Mexican Mafia prima donna.

Life is much easier with concrete fists.

It would explain the early injury to Smith’s arm, leading to his entirely defensive attitude for the rest of the fight.

If I was about to fight Team Canelo, I would be watching the hand wrapping like Team SSM prefight v Cheato.

you know, the likely Cartel influence in the career of Mexican fighters isn't a subject that comes up very often, but given the cartels omnipresence in Mexico, IMO it'd be naive to assume many if not most fighters have 'ties' (at the very least) to the cartels

is there any specific link that has been found with Alvarez? you just can't see the big guns in the cartel seeing all that moneymaking potential on 'their' patch, and not wanting a piece of it. or all of it, maybe :maybe:

Can't remember seeing this bad an eye / cheekbone injury before even more so at SM.

The Smith arm injury was quite odd too.

And he seems to sit back more at the heavier weights and wait for a damaging finish e,g. the Kovalev KO.

All seems very bizarre especially for someone who was a LM not so long ago.

Canelo has been Mexican royalty for at least 10 years. He is too large a profit center not to be deeply connected to the most powerful oligarchies, which operate beyond borders; the neofeudalist movement.

Where are AJ and Fury fighting, again?
