Do we really know how good BJS was?
Re: Do we really know how good BJS was?
I'm well aware how good BS is/was. Southern Area, Commonwealth, British and European
titles....he ticked all the boxes. Sadly for BS he will be remembered for this fight.
The truth of the current matter is Canelo flicked the switch on half why through the 8th round and the chasm between them was huge....in every respect.

Hilarous. I think it's you that needs to watch it again. Holding onto someone isn't backing them up.ironbeard wrote: ↑12 May 2021, 13:10 I think that if you watch it again you will see that BJS backed Canelo up to the ropes, physically, more than once. He literally got Canelo off his feet awkwardly in the middle of the ring once. This was all amidst Canelo uncharacteristically missing wildly and repeatedly.
Did you have shit in your eyes when you watched it?

Grappling someone back into the ropes is most certainly backing them up,Dan Dares wrote: ↑13 May 2021, 12:19Hilarous. I think it's you that needs to watch it again. Not in my book. You back up an opponent with punches. That's how I've always understood the term "back him up".
End of the day Alvarez was in control of that fight. Few boxers have the pacing of a fight, or knowing when to pull the trigger, better than Canelo.

If you read the original post, that
I had it 6-2 Canelo. Obviously, I acknowledge that Canelo controlled the fight. However, he also lost 2 of 3 rounds prior to the 8th. During those rounds BJS was engaging Canelo physically, moving him around. He also was landing more and cleaner blows while Canelo was missing wildly; uncharacteristic for him.
It appeared that he was tiring and frustrated in the 7th. Was that strategy? Possibly. He may have been giving BJS false confidence. Great acting job if that was the case.

Ah apologies, I jumped in half way through!
Yeah, some of those points you make I agree with.

Why is this thread in the past tense? Has he retired and I missed it?
Re: Do we really know how good BJS was?
No it isn't. If someone puts their weight on you, and is holding, like BJS was, and was warned for, resisting it saps energy. Best thing to do is to let them. Pretty standard practice. Have you ever boxed before?

Listen up,
BJS won rounds 5 and 7 going into 8. Canelo was missing wildly, especially in 7. BJS had an argument for winning 8 prior to the decisive blow.
BJS may be a puny person outside of the ring, but he is a world class boxer, and he showed it v Canelo.
Resume regurgitating your biased

You must have had shit in your eyes if you think Alvarez was being 'backed up' by Saunders. That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard about the fight so far.ironbeard wrote: ↑14 May 2021, 08:48 BJS won rounds 5 and 7 going into 8. Canelo was missing wildly, especially in 7. . I will keep shoveling it all back into your face.
World class fighters perform for 12 rounds. Little evidence of Saunders doing this in any of his fights. Wipe the shit out of your eyes and have another look.

Billy never walked him down. I understand the point, and Fury gave a masterclass in leaning on against Wilder, but it was completely different. Canelo was never distressed.

Never said he “walked him down;” especially not the way Fury walked down Wilder in the second fight.mickey1975 wrote: ↑14 May 2021, 09:34 Billy never walked him down. My point was (originally) that BJS was moving Canelo around physically at times, especially in the 7th. BJS also grappled him back into the ropes more than once. It did appear, at the end of 7, that Canelo MAY HAVE BEEN tiring. Point being that if a fighter of the stature and physical strength of BJS could muscle Canelo around a bit, what can Beterbiev, Joe Smith, Benavidez, and possibly Plant do to him?
I saw enough to conclude that SMW is where Canelo should stay, with the exception of
Maybe he will prove me wrong.
BJS was never likely to win that fight, even if he had won the 8th, but I do believe he showed a decent blueprint for success by bigger, stronger fighters with power.
