Best puncher: The best puncher was Julian Jackson, come on, please. I don’t even have to think when it comes to that question. One shot and I was gone and it came just after the referee was going to stop the fight in my favor. I made the mistake of going for a sucker punch, when he was in the corner, and Jackson responded with a knockout punch. I had to go to the hospital and there were some scary moments because I couldn’t remember a thing about the fight. Three or four hours later it all came back to me and that was a really powerful right hand shot. There were a lot of broken hearts in Britain that night, especially mine. Another extremely hard puncher was Lindell Holmes, who I outpointed in Sheffield, but nobody tops Jackson.
Strongest: Sanderline Williams in 1985. I remember him because he wore army trunks, but more so because his shots seemed to go right through me. I really had to move that night, because he hit so hard. I would still give punch power to Julian Jackson though. I have to because he knocked me out.
Graham's memory isn't too reliable. Ricky Stackhouse wore the army shorts (whom he stopped in eight rounds) and not Sanderline Williams.

Hit him so hard he forgot his name lol, saying that he got the year right for Williams (1985) so maybe Williams wore army shorts too? If he actually meant Stackhouse that wasn't until 1987bennie wrote: ↑24 Mar 2021, 12:07Controversial wrote: ↑27 Nov 2020, 10:59Yep I've said this many times, those KO punches don't always hurt, it's the ones that don't knock you out that hurt more. Yeah, Williams was exceptionally tough. His draw with James Toney is an outstanding result. I hope he's doing OK.

I'll try and dig out the report in BN. Hopefully Graham Houston will have written something.

Sorry mate, nothing in BN on the Holmes-Williams fight. Annoyingly, Graham Houston reports on the Curtis Parker-Ricky Stackhouse fight on the very same show.

Re: Which fighters said hit them the hardest ?
Just happened to watch first Williams vs Toney fight (draw) and the commentator said Lindell Holmes had Williams down on one knee, rocked him but couldn't put him away and that one knee knockdown was the only time Williams has been down in his career (up to fighting Toney), commentator said Holmes stopped him in 9 but didn't give more details. Boxrec says McClellan had in down too. Holmes was a decent puncher though with 22KOs in 24 wins he fought Williams and Herol Graham also said Holmes was an 'extremely hard puncher'.

Graham Houston emigrated to Canada in the 1970s and reported on all the North American TV fights for Boxing News up to the early 1990s, when he joined Boxing Monthly. I can only assume that they didn't screen Holmes-Williams. The Curtis Parker fight with Ricky Stackhouse went the full 10 rounds and proved a surprisingly hard one for Parker, who finished with a bad cut and scraped home on the cards. A flash knockdown he scored late in the first round proved the difference.
Lindell Holmes was an excellent fighter but he wasn't particularly exciting.

I copied you into another post and in commentary for Benn vs Williams, Reg Gutteridge says Williams lost on a cut to Holmes. Benn had some rocky moments and the result booed.bennie wrote: ↑25 Mar 2021, 03:03Controversial wrote: ↑24 Mar 2021, 16:46Just happened to watch first Williams vs Toney fight (draw) and the commentator said Lindell Holmes had Williams down on one knee, rocked him but couldn't put him away and that one knee knockdown was the only time Williams has been down in his career (up to fighting Toney), commentator said Holmes stopped him in 9 but didn't give more details. Williams took Benn to a whole new level. The Londoner would never have beaten Doug DeWitt a fight later but for Williams.

Did Sonny Liston ever divulge who hit him the hardest?
He obviously died whilst still an active fighter, so he probably never did.

I seem to remember him saying (before he had fought Cassius Clay in 1964)
that the hardest punchers he had faced were Cleveland Williams and Mike DeJohn.
the hardest punch that Liston said he had ever landed was on Albert Westphal
( and his second Milt Baily agreed that that was the hardest punch by Liston that he had ever seen land on an opponent)

you know whenever they ask the Boxer's "who had hit them the hardest" ?
They should also ask them what was the hardest punch that they believe they had ever landed on an opponent.

Re: Which fighters said hit them the hardest ?
I just read this in Sugar Ray Robinson's 1970 autobiography SUGAR RAY.
Concerning his first two fights with Jake LaMotta
first fight was in October 1942 ,Robinson's 36th pro fight (27 by KO)
(in which LaMotta had 10 pounds on him)
Sugar Ray Robinson was hitting LaMotta with so many punches his arms were getting weary (which rarely happened)
Robinson was thinking "Man, he has fall any moment now"
But not the Bull,
"his head popped up and he let go a left hook that almost tore through my stomach.
It hurt so much I had tears in my eyes, like a kid.
I got the decision but I learned that Jake La Motta was some animal"
in the second fight a few months later (February 1943-Robibson's 43rd pro fight)
"IIn the Eighth round, he did something nobody had ever done to me before.
He hit me with a right hand in my mid-section and when I doubled up,he let go a left hook to my jaw.
For the first time in my career,I had no legs.I sagged through the ropes and onto the ring apron and sprawled there.
In my daze I could here the referre Sam Hennnessy counting"...Six....Seven...Eight.."
I made it back into the ring In time."

May have been mentioned before but Cooper reckoned Floyd Patterson caught him with a peach.
All the mags at the time reckoned Cooper avoided Liston? Not sure whether that was actively done.

Liston would have marmalised Cooper.
Sonny's jab alone would have bust open Cooper's face like a ripe tomato.

His manager purposefully avoided Liston, quite rightly.
Jim Wicks was called the Bishop because of his fatherly, protective approach to his fighters.

Re: Which fighters said hit them the hardest ?
Yes cooper was a very good fighter, just not top class. He lost to every world champ he fought, ali twice, paterson and ingo koed him but he was v good indeed just a level down. Liston would have most likely inflicted career ending damage.
Once thing i would say though is i saw the first ali, cooper fight recently and cooper really was busting ali up inside, i think even without the knockdown he was probably on top which is interesting. Ali never a great infighter but he learned a lot by the time he got cooper in a title fight and handled henry easier,

Cooper said that years later: in the first fight he 'got away with murder on the inside', in the second Ali held him so tight when ever he got up-close he couldn't get anything going.cfang wrote: ↑20 May 2021, 17:46 Yes cooper was a very good fighter, just not top class. I just read something interesting in Jim J. Corbett's autobiography THE ROAR OF THE CROWD (published in 1926)
where he comments the various fights he had seen at the California Athletic Club in San Fransico during his career.
(page 61)
"and Charley Turner, one of the greatest Middle-weights California ever turned out,
was knocked out by Denny Kelliher of Boston
who, in my opinion was the hardest hitter who ever stepped into the ring
-and I do not except "Lanky-Bob" himself ".

In his 1926 autobiography, Corbett doesn't mention anything about Kelliher being "Pound for Pound"
one of the hardest hittesr,
Jim J. just says he was THE HARDEST HITTER.
What was the Cyberboxing Zones source for that ?
