Press Release

Unbeaten two-time world champion David “El Bandera Roja” Benavídez will make his homecoming return to Phoenix, Ariz. against 168-pound contender Kyrone Davis in a 10-round match that headlines live on SHOWTIME Saturday, November 13 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Footprint Center.

Benavídez was originally scheduled to face former world champion Jose Uzcátegui, who was forced to withdraw due to a failed pre-fight drug test.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast begins at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and will feature the much-awaited return of longtime contender José Benavídez, the older brother of David Benavídez, facing Argentina’s Francisco Emanuel Torres in the 10-round super welterweight co-main event

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Sampson Boxing and TGB Promotions, are on sale now and are available for purchase through Ticketmaster.com.

Still just 24-years-old, Benavídez (24-0, 21 KOs) enters this fight having knocked out his last four opponents, including a September 2019 knockout of two-time super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell. Benavídez is trained by his father José Sr., alongside his brother and former title challenger, José Jr. In 2017, he became the youngest super middleweight champion in boxing history by defeating Ronald Gavril on SHOWTIME at just 20 years old. Representing his native Phoenix, and returning to fight there for the first time since 2015 on November 13, Benavídez went from a 15-year-old prodigy sparring with Gennady Golovkin and Peter Quillin, to world title contender with a 10-fight knockout streak from 2015 through 2017, including a highlight-reel knockout of Rogelio Medina with a seven-punch combination that earned him his first title opportunity.

A native of Monmouth, N.J., Davis (16-2-1, 6 KO) most recently won an exciting September clash against Martez McGregor, triumphing by decision after eight action-packed rounds. Davis had previously been impressive against the toughest test of his career, as he fought two-time super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell to a split-draw in February. It was the 26-year-old’s debut at super middleweight, after beginning his career at middleweight. Davis had won five of his six previous outings heading into the Dirrell clash. He is trained by renowned coach Stephen Edwards in Philadelphia, Pa. alongside former unified world champion Julian Williams.

Id rather see him in a meet and greet at a mall. Are any of these characters (Benavidez, Charlo, Andrade) ever going to fight someone other than part time uber drivers. I realize it is a sub but the original opponent was basically an ex paper champ. That's why most people believe that Plant is going to get blown out.

It ain't Bena's fault! He needs to stay active!

If Bena can't get Charlo or Canelo at 168 , he should move up and challenge Zurdo Ramirez, Vlasov, Callum Smith orJoshua Buatsi and try to get a title shot @ 175.

Canelo would want to be there too.

Yes, he's not a bad fighter.

I'm surprised they found someone as good as Davis with just 2 weeks notice.

David Benavidez is one of those fighters that bizarrely receives an honorary rite of passage to being regarded as the best super-middleweight only the planet (from those not named Canelo) from fight fans, without even needing to face any decent opponents.

He seems to receive kudos from certain fans for theoretical “victories” (based solely on opinions/expectation), with the same mentally deranged individuals also choosing to criticise other fighters for their real-world wins.

But lets’ not pretend that Benavidez’s lack of career progression is due to him being allegedly “fearsome” or the “Boogeyman” at 168lbs, because:

• Seven months after signing a four-year contract extension, four-year contract extension with his existing promoter, Sampson Boxing, he accepted (and then had to return) a $250K sign-on bonus payment he wrongly accepted from Top Rank to join Bob Arum’s stable.

• He failed an out-of-competition drug test when he tested positive for a component of cocaine (benzoylecgonine). He admitted to making a mistake, was stripped of his WBC title and also received a four months suspension.

• He failed to make weight for his fight against Roamer Alexis (by a 3lbs margin) and was subsequently stripped of his WBC title for the second time.

• Rejected an opportunity to face the current WBC middleweight titleholder, Jermall Charlo, in a catch-weight bout.

• Has been inactive and delivered an uninspiring, though dominant, performance during his most recent outing against Ronald Ellis. The Kyrone Davis bout will only be Benavidez’s fifth fight during a 45-month timeframe.

• Benavidez’s career best victories have come against a past-his-prime iteration of Anthony Dirrell and Ronald Gavril.

David Benavidez comes across as a nice guy though, but he’s made many poor career-based decisions and his resume is weak.

I’d like to see him fight anybody with a pulse before being granted a career-high payday for the Canelo bout, but unfortunately Kyrone Davis is not that guy.

I expect Benavidez to score a straightforward one-sided victory over Davis and will inevitably be praised for his alleged “greatness” immediately afterwards!

ya i agree, i think he's plenty good, but dude has been a total f@ck up at multiple points in his career - just as he shouldve been taking off - yet for some reasson remains well loved while other fighters get the blame for david's matchmaking

I think Charlito is sick and tired to cut weight at 160 just to avoid Benavidez @ 168. :OhYes:

Its a pity that Benavidez lost his strap in such a foolish way.

Come on, just for once, don't be so deliberately disingenuous.

You know full well that David Benavidez has what is known as a 'fan favourite' style.

Benavidez is a warrior, and that is a big part of what this sport should always be about, isn't it?

I can “see” what fight fans appreciate in Benavidez, but his poor resume and current predicament are of his own making.

In my mind, Benavidez needs one legitimate victory to justify the hype and praise that’s been bestowed upon him.

He hasn’t earned it yet and he has also frivolously thrown away massive opportunities (as per the situations I've previously detailed, since he would have already faced Canelo by now if he hadn't made such massive mistakes).

For sure, we all make mistakes and generally learn from them, but for Benavidez to “fix” those he’s made, he needs one big win over a legitimately talented foe before I can celebrate his actual fighting prowess.

Well, for that, his stablemate Charlito should stop quacking around at 160 draining himself and move up at 168 and fight Benavidez. :OhYes: :TU:

To be fair though, how seriously can you take a fighter seriously that willingly threw away their world title twice, due to excessive eating and cocaine, coupled with burning bridges with various promoters and rejecting an opportunity to face Jermall Charlo at catchweight?

For sure, Benavidez is talented, but surely he’s to blame for his own predicament, not Jermall Charlo?

“I campaign at 160. David Benavidez is at 168,” said Jermall Charlo on social media. “I want to fight the mother f****, meet up somewhere. I’m with it.”

Benavidez's response was: “[Jermall Charlo] doesn’t even want to come up to 168, he wants to do a catch-weight! Like I didn’t say I wanted to do a catch-weight, I didn't say I wanted to go down! You said that you wanted to come up to 168, so now what’s the problem?!”

Is David Benavidez the A-side over Jermall Charlo?

Simple answer, yes.

He's ready willing and able whilst Charlo needs more time to think things through. Rehydration clauses and purse splits etc.

These things take time.

In Jermall's case, usually an inordinate amount of time. The Danny Jacobs fight won't be the only one he allowed to get away from him.

Even boxing promoters don't have endless neverending patience.

Not whilst there's other fish to fry.

benavidez got some irrational fanbois, i like the dude, fun style with those crazy combos and lots of ability, but he really hasnt proven much and he made his own bed with the repeat weight fails and drug issue. tbf this latest step down in opposition wasnt his fault though

charlo defo would be the a-side over him, benavidez beats him and it chang es of course. would love to see that fight. charlo cant get anything big at 160 so why not :box:

In Benavidez's favor is that he's 24 and should be coming into his prime the next few years. He can afford to bide his time, get fat and coked up, and wait for a big fight. Compared to a guy like Crawford who's getting old, or even the Charlos who are in their 30s, he should have at least another 6 or 7 or even 10 years left to get some big paydays. I don't like it but it's boxing today and it's always been a young man's sport.

Undercard Press Release

Mayweather Promotions stablemates square off as undefeated “Prince” Rock Myrthil and contender Ladarius “Memphis” Miller meet in an eight-round super lightweight battle topping the non-televised undercard lineup on Saturday, November 13 at Footprint Center in Phoenix in a Premier Boxing Champions event.

The card is headlined by unbeaten, two-time Super Middleweight World Champion David “El Bandera Roja” Benavídez against top contender Kyrone “Shut It Down” Davis, live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING in a telecast that begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Tickets for the live event are on sale now and are available for purchase through Ticketmaster.com.

Fighting out of Los Angeles, California, the 29-year-old Myrthil (17-0, 13 KOs) discovered boxing at age 18, after his family relocated from Haiti to the United States. Following a stellar amateur career, Myrthil made his pro debut in January 2017 with a second-round TKO over Allan Varela in Tijuana, Mexico. In September 2019, he won an eight-round unanimous decision over Jonathan Steele in Las Vegas. The performance caught the eye of Floyd Mayweather, who sat ringside for that bout and ultimately signed Myrthil to his Mayweather Promotions outfit. Most recently, Myrthil outpointed Johnny Rodriguez over eight rounds in February 2020.

Originally from Memphis, Miller (21-2, 6 KOs) now resides in Las Vegas and also fights out of the Mayweather Promotions stable. The 28-year-old veteran’s list of accomplishments includes wins over former champions Jamel Herring and Jezreel Corrales. Miller will look to get back on track after his 12-fight win streak was snapped in his most recent bout, a points loss to unbeaten contender Michel Rivera in October 2020.

Non-televised undercard action will also feature undefeated, 18-year-old prospect Elijah Garcia (8-0, 7 KOs) taking on Todd Manuel (20-18-1, 6 KOs) in six-rounds of super welterweight action, Guadalajara, Mexico’s Jonathan Fierro (11-0, 10 KOs) in an eight-round super featherweight bout, Arizona native Jesus Ibarra (11-0, 5 KOs) facing Hector Suarez (12-13-2, 6 KOs) in a six-round super lightweight clash, former amateur standout Micky Scala (2-0, 1 KO) versus Martez Jackson (5-5-3, 2 KOs) in a four-round super welterweight match, Congo’s Farid Ngoga (4-0, 4 KOs) taking on Isaac Freeman (3-9-2, 3 KOs) in a four-round super welterweight duel, and Phoenix resident Keenan Carbajal (22-2-1, 14 KOs) in an eight-round featherweight fight.
