Who will work with Terence Crawford? Who can he fight?

Post by Enlightened-One »

Terence Crawford’s commercial numbers are so poor (i.e. 135K PPV buys for the Porter bout) that he could be facing a much bigger dilemma than not being able to justify his claims for being the A-side against Spence Jr.

It seems that DAZN aren’t interested in Crawford, because the numbers don’t make sense (as per Eddie Hearn's comments to iFL TV yesterday).

Bob Arum was eager to offload Crawford, with his relationship soured with Bud to the point Terence has already claimed he won’t work with Top Rank again.

So it begs the question, are the PBC even willing to recruit Crawford and offer him the paydays he’s accustomed to?

The networks need to generate a profit from boxing and if they can’t, they’ll start covering other sports that are more profitable.

So the PBC could take one look at Crawford, his unprofessional conduct during last years heated exchanges with Bob Arum (i.e. airing dirty laundry in public), his self-confessed unwillingness to talk to specific media outlets, coupled with his lack of self-promotion during press conferences, and decide they’re really not that interested in working with him… or they’ll instead demand he takes a significant pay cut, due to his numbers.

If no one else wants Crawford, then Terence will be negotiating with the PBC from a position of weakness, which might lead him to consider retirement, rather than taking much smaller paydays than the $4m purse guarantees he previously received from Top Rank.

So this leads me to beg the rather obvious question, where does Terence Crawford go from here, because at this moment in time, all of Bud’s “eggs” currently appear to be in only “one basket”?

Thoughts?

Bob didn't even react when he was sitting right next to Crawford, and Terry was saying Bob couldn't get him the Spence fight. If Bob was pissed off about that statement, Bob would have said something, he ain't one to hold back.
So I recon count Bob in.

Here's what Bob Arum previously said about Terence Crawford:

He’s got to promote like [Teofimo] Lopez does. He’s got to promote like Shakur [Stevenson] does. Like [Floyd] Mayweather did. Like [Manny] Pacquiao did.

If he doesn’t, then who the f— needs him? He may be the greatest fighter in the world, but, hey, I ain’t going bankrupt promoting him.

The question is, ‘Do we want to keep him?’ I could build a house in Beverly Hills on the money I’ve lost on him in the last three fights. A beautiful home.

I don’t give a s— if [Team Crawford] got mad at me,” he told The Athletic.

This business is not about getting mad. This business is about facts and the reality of the situation. What’d I say that was wrong? I’ll show him how much we’ve lost on his fights.

“Again, if we did this fight with Spence and put our money in for half of the risk, and Crawford wins and Haymon wants to sign him … be my guest, for Christ’s sake! In other words, I am not going to go in my pocket anymore for Terence Crawford.

“I don’t have to make a lot of money with him on this, but I know I’ll break even or make a couple of dollars. I’m no longer in the business of losing money on Terence Crawford.

I'd love it if he gave Virgil Ortiz or Boots Ennis a shot. Crawford would tear Taylor apart.

Sign with PBC and the division suddenly gets hotter than a hot rock in a heatwave in Havana.

There’s an article on BS with some quotes from Bob saying Crawford/Taylor will do 70,000 at a Stadium in the U.K. and something like 1.5-2m U.K. PPVs. Will be more buys than any Tyson Fury fight in the U.K. and most of AJ’s.

He’s completely deluded.

He said Bud-Porter would do 2m

He said Bud and Khan would do nearly 2-3m

ODLH said Canelo-GGG 2 would surpass 2m

Promoters are always gonna hype.

I can understand hyping a show but this is just complete bollocks.

Boxing has got to do one of two things to sell more PPV:

Either (1) make great cards with at least three to four awesome fights from top to bottom like the UFC has done and continue to sell them at $70 each or (2) drop the price for their current product to about $40.

I genuinely don’t think having much better undercards would change things too much.

Boxing needs to reassess their commercials and reduce the amount of PPVs they have. People can’t follow a sport properly when there’s a PPV every 2 weeks plus other subscriptions needed.

They need good, competitive fights that people want to see on TV and then do PPVs for the really big fights - not just every Gervonta Davis fight.

Also whilst I don’t begrudge boxers earning well I think in the US most of the top fighters are grossly overpaid. Did Terrance Crawford deserve $5m or whatever is for fighting Kell Brook based on the viewing figures/money generated? No chance. I understand it’s a competitive market but signing people to big guarantees is only going to push fighters on to PPV more quickly.

Things that Crawford may need to do to increase his market value, other than being good p4p and beat good opponents, would be fight multiple times per year, stack-up the undercards, spend more money on commercials, and maybe fight on cheaper / free broadcasts to elevate his exposure.

Aside from Spence, some of the options for Crawford to fight might include Danny Garcia, Mikey Garcia, Ugas, Ennis, Ramos, Vergil Ortiz, and Butaev.

I agree. More exposure is the key. His talents are underappreciated. He's in a good spot now, taking control of his remaining career. He's been healthy, injury free, and could box another 3-4 years I think. I think he'd get a belt at 154 for sure, possibly 160 too.

those guys are options.

but there's no real reason not to try to unify.

fans want to see the champions fight each other.

spence/crawford should be next no matter what!

the 'little' charlo twin is waiting at 154 with all the marbles.

but i guess there's not enuff money in the world to make him face crawford.

I doubt if Spence will take on Crawford next, but hope I'm wrong. He'll want a Ugas fight if Haymon can get his checkbook out to make it happen, after the WBA tourney snafu. Ugas is in a tough spot right now.

Hopefully Crawford can get the Thurman fight sooner, or give Ennis or Ortiz a shot.

In the meantime at 154, Mell has Castano problems, so we'll see.
