There’s no chance of Dripford allowing people to watch indoor sports by the end of Jan. Either needs to be moved to a new venue in England asap, or postponed again.

Exactly that, Eu wasn't cute enough to compete, but kept coming all night long, and Groves body almost gave up on him.

UK Boxing: No Decision Yet on January Shows, as COVID Variant Continues To Spread

No decision has yet been made on whether or not professional boxing will take place in the UK in January, as the latest omicron variant of the coronavirus continues to spread.

The British Boxing Board of Control has advised all promoters that the sport may be suspended in January, which is usually the quietest month of the year for the sport in the UK, but no final decision has been made while discussions are continuing.

Key to the Board’s decision is whether or not they will be able to have doctors and medical staff at ringside as well as intensive care availability in the case of a serious medical emergency.

Nearly all Board doctors work in the National Health Service. While the omicron variant is believed to be milder than previous strains of Covid-19, its quick spread across the country has resulted in problems for the NHS, not so much with intensive care units being overwhelmed, but with large numbers of staff being off work after testing positive.

The Board are having ongoing discussions with doctors and drawing up a new “operational document”, the blueprint for running shows. It will be the 14th version of the document since boxing recommenced after the first Covid lockdown in July 2020.

The biggest show in January that has been announced is the rearranged Chris Eubank Jr-Liam Williams middleweight fight at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, on January 29, which was pushed back from December after Williams injured a shoulder. Tickets remain on sale for the fight, despite the Welsh government having currently stopped crowds of more than 50 from attending sporting events.

While there are no limits on crowds in England – the Amir Khan-Kell Brook fight is in Manchester on February 19 - sporting crowds in Scotland are presently limited to 500, although it seems likely that will change before Josh Taylor’s delayed world super-lightweight title defense against Jack Catterall in Glasgow on February 26.

Matchroom are yet to confirm any dates for 2022, while Queensberry Promotions have also put any announcements on hold. Queensberry had planned to hold a prospects show in January, while heavyweight Joe Joyce had been expected to be in action on February 12. Joyce picked up an injury, though, pushing his return back until the Spring.

Boxing Suspension Makes "No Difference" To NHS

A boxing doctor has said that the British Boxing Board of Control’s decision to suspend boxing in January makes “no difference” to the National Health Service’s ability to treat people during the latest surge of the omicron variant of Covid-19.

Jamil Shah Foridi, who works as a doctor in an accident and emergency department in hospital, as well as a boxing doctor said in an interview on BBC breakfast that the suspension served “no practical purpose”.

“Personally, I don’t think it makes any difference,” Foridi said. “I work full time in A&E and in my spare time I will be doing boxing bouts. The fact that boxing bouts are not occurring does not mean I spend any more time in A&E, I am just not doing boxing bouts any more.

“I think that the people who are most affected are the boxers. I don’t see a rise in doctors suddenly attending hospitals. They are already working in hospitals. The ones that aren’t, are in clinical practices or they have quit their training pathways. They aren’t suddenly going to go into hospitals. It is the boxers who are affected – this doesn’t increase staff in the NHS.

“The boxing commission has its own medical panel and at the top of that is a consultant. He has probably decided that this is the best way to approach things, it does inhibit any backlash against the boxing community in the future. I can understand why the decision has been made in the political sense. I don’t think it has any practical purpose as such.”

The BBBoC announced on New Year’s Day that boxing would be suspended for a month after a huge surge in the numbers of people contracting Covid-19, which is threatening to overwhelm NHS services, which have been badly hit by having large numbers of staff off sick.

Faridi, who boxed while studying at Cambridge University, also outline the role of a boxing doctor.

“Pre-bout you do a medical examination on the boxers to check that they are medically fit to box, during the bout you are at ringside and ensure that if any unfortunate incidents do occur, for example if someone has a laceration that is effecting their eyes or if a knockout does occur, you have to make sure the boxer is OK,” he said. “If they need to go to A&E, you make that call, if they need to have an oxygen mask, you put that oxygen mask on, you just have to make sure the boxer is safe. Post-bout, for every boxer, you have to make sure there is no long-lasting damage and that there is nothing of concern.

“In terms of the amount of time this takes up, there are not events taking place every single day, I have, personally, attended about six or seven bouts in the past year. Obviously, that is affected by Covid, but even without Covid that would probably be once or twice a month.”

Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Williams gets new date after second cancellation

Chris Eubank Jr is set to go head-to-head with Liam Williams on 5 February in a new date for their middleweight clash.

The pair were originally set to fight one another on 11 December, but a shoulder injury forced Williams to withdraw and the bout was rescheduled for 29 January.

The fight has been delayed once again, however, with the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) suspending all match-ups in the country this month.

The fight will still take place in Cardiff, with Welshman Williams set to fight in front of a home crowd – if fans are permitted in the venue.

Of January’s suspension of boxing, the BBBofC released the following statement.

“Following advice from the British Boxing Board of Control Medical Panel, Boxing tournaments under the jurisdiction of the BBBofC will be suspended for the month of January.

“A further review by the Medical Panel and Stewards will take place prior to the planned recommencement of Boxing in February.”

Eubank Jr is 31-2 as a professional, while Williams is 23-3.
