The major talking points are Ortiz’s lack of durability, coupled with him seemingly appearing shot, needing to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat via a one-punch style KO.
I think Luis Ortiz knows his time as being regarded as a top-ten world-rated heavyweight fighter is over.
Lots of prospects will be desperately hoping to face Ortiz now, using him as a stepping stone (gatekeeper) to elevate their careers.
However, I suspect the Cuban will duck high-risk low-reward opponents, whilst hoping to end his career receiving a decent retirement payday, by agreeing to be used as the sacrificial lamb to assist Andy Ruiz Jr’s world title ambitions.![]()
It’s a confusing situation that hasn’t been clarified by the IBF.
Filip Hrgovic and Zhilei Zhang are in talks over a separate IBF eliminator.
I don’t expect Luis Ortiz to face the winner of that fight to become the mandatory for pennies, especially considering there’ll be a lengthy wait for the title shot.
Instead, I expect Ortiz to prefer to receive a much bigger payday facing one of his fellow PBC stablemates (specifically Andy Ruiz Jr.).
The Ortiz we saw today wouldn't want any part of Hrgovic. Zhang would be perfect, but you think it wouldn't pay? I wondered why Matchroom signed Zhang.

Faust vs Kiladze was fornicating awesome. The stoppage was a bit premature with all the circumstances. The ref should have let them to continue massacring each other.
Ortiz vs Martin is an instant fight of the year candidate. Right on the 1st day of the year! What a crazy fight. Chuck was literally out on the feet after Ortiz' money punch. And then that hand being locked between the ropes, what a surreal stuff.
A damn good event to open 2022.

Yeah, Ortiz vs Martin was good. Since Martin dropped Ortiz for the first time, the fight received the intrigue and intensity. It was fun to see Chuck putting Ortiz on his a$$ twice. The KD scored by Ortiz and the following onslaught was also spectacular.gregregegg wrote: ↑02 Jan 2022, 04:54You thought ortiz martin was that good? Well, Faust vs Kiladze maybe was better, but it was too short.
Re: Round-by-Round: Luis Ortiz vs. Charles Martin - January 1, 2021
I've only watched the highlights but is it fair to say that Martin was winningly fairly dominantly until he lost? If so, it's a bit embarrassing that Ortiz's best/second best win is scraping it past a past it version of a guy that AJ was mocked for beating in 2 rounds in his prime.
Other than that, I guess Faust's reputation may be on thin ice for a few fights now. Fairly good wins for both Demirezen and Sanchez. Sanchez v Ortiz should be next. Faust should face Rice. Demirezen Vs Martin?

i had martin up 49-44
ya, aj after only 2 years pro beat martin so easily that chuck was considered a joke for years
luis ortiz has beaten 1 top 10 opponent his whole career, martin might be his next best win and he had to go through hell to get it. wilder fans still think he's great though!
ive never seen a case before of one guy having his fan base so highly drawn from that of one of his rivals

PBC need to learn how to make highlight videos.
They need to learn from DAZN.

Not sure many will have Ortiz as the favourite against any top 15 guys after last night's showing, despite getting the win.Las Vegas boxing guy wrote: ↑02 Jan 2022, 09:19Lol, not to derail from my own thread ........ but who wins Luis "King Kong" Ortiz vs Andy "The Destroyer" Ruiz Jr?Enlightened-One wrote: ↑02 Jan 2022, 01:26I expect Ortiz to prefer to receive a much bigger payday facing one of his fellow PBC stablemates (specifically Andy Ruiz Jr.).

The ko was sort of on the table from the start just waiting for Ortiz to pick it up. If you go with the 10 points must system then sure Charles was winning dominantly just like Francois Botha was dominating Mike Tyson back in the day but everyone knew that the ko could come at any time and it sure did. What made this interesting was Charles's punching power but it allowed him to knock Ortiz down twice but it was obvious that Ortiz might at any point catch his unconventional opponent and that if he did that the fight might have a sudden ending.joshj909 wrote: ↑02 Jan 2022, 07:33 I've only watched the highlights but is it fair to say that Martin was winningly fairly dominantly until he lost? Looks like Faust - Kiladze was the white Foreman - Lyle LOL
Re: Round-by-Round: Luis Ortiz vs. Charles Martin - January 1, 2021
Ortiz’s legs are gone. Martin should have been able to finish him. Ortiz deserves credit for gutting out the win, and he can still bluff his way to some Ws with his power, but he has very little chance v anyone top 15 now.

hahahah how can they call that "highlights"? Half of it is the introduction, then at the end we see the ropes holding Martin and they announce "technical knockout!"
It makes it look like Martin got stuck in the ropes so he couldn't continue, which is a TKO. Ortiz never hit him!
Re: Round-by-Round: Luis Ortiz vs. Charles Martin - January 1, 2021
1) Overall card better than I thought. First slugfest was awesome.
2) The Cuban vs Cuban fight there was no defense. I thought they taught defense on that island.
3) The ref who stopped the first fight too early also missed a KD in another fight. Not overly impressed.
4) I think Sanchez is quite limited and like others said the main event was entertaining but Ortiz doesn't have much left.

Re: Round-by-Round: Luis Ortiz vs. Charles Martin - January 1, 2021
Ortiz showed rust being out for so long, and his last fight was one round. Even an old rusty Ortiz beats Ruiz. Ruiz chose not to fight Ortiz like he said he would, instead fighting Arreola, who is shot. Ortiz by KO. He's Pacquiao's age, but still better than Ruiz.Las Vegas boxing guy wrote: ↑02 Jan 2022, 09:19Lol, not to derail from my own thread ........ but who wins Luis "King Kong" Ortiz vs Andy "The Destroyer" Ruiz Jr?Enlightened-One wrote: ↑02 Jan 2022, 01:26I expect Ortiz to prefer to receive a much bigger payday facing one of his fellow PBC stablemates (specifically Andy Ruiz Jr.).
Re: Round-by-Round: Luis Ortiz vs. Charles Martin - January 1, 2021
Do you mean Ortiz's legs are gone- as in from the beginning?
Because I noticed right from the start he was not steady on his feet, a lot like Lucas Browne is now. Like a top heavy spinning top on a slowing spin. That power jab from Martin sat Ortiz on his backside so fast it was like his legs were swept out from under him. And punch resistance, is it there still? I'm not so sure.
The first KD was a definite back of the head shot, and both guys share blame for it. So I'm not counting that as in punch resistance.
But the KD from the jab- a bit of a concern because Ortiz wasn't rocked or coming off some hard shots, it was 'bang' jab connects, Ortiz goes down. I've watched it a few times now.
My takeaway from the fight was Martin has improved, Ortiz's on the slide, and a lucky punch or two changed what was a one sided romp to a wide decision.
