butterbean also ko'd former wwf big man sean o'haire (aka chuck palumbo) in like 30 seconds in pride. between boxing and fighting in k1 and a bunch of different mma and wrestling promotions, bean had an interesting career

Re: Butterbean and the world title
To be fair he looked like that all through his career , makes you wonder how he even passed a medical .polecateddy wrote: ↑04 Feb 2022, 11:06 The currently unwell Mark Porter beat up the end of the line Butterbean - 430 pounds! - in Blackpool of all places in an unlicensed match in 2008. I saw Thompson batter an over the hill Don Frye and I think he beat that Bobby Lashley guy from wwe.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑04 Feb 2022, 17:49 james thompson was fun as f@ck to watch, big strong chinny guy who came to brawl. he messed up kimbo and nearly ko'd him before getting his ear basically detached from his head

Re: Butterbean and the world title
O’Haire wasn’t Chuck Palumbo, Palumbo was his tag team partner. It looked like he could have done with making the tag in that fight with Butterbean.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑04 Feb 2022, 17:51 butterbean also ko'd former wwf big man sean o'haire (aka chuck palumbo) in like 30 seconds in pride. between boxing and fighting in k1 and a bunch of different mma and wrestling promotions, bean had an interesting career

fornicate we need another butterbean to save boxing. Babic is fun but he is absolutely no butterbean.
Re: Butterbean and the world title
It’s easy to take the piss out of the Butterz, maybe he wasn’t the best and maybe he was not your normal athlete but his record over 3 combat sports (mma, boxing and kick boxing) is impressive, people might question his opponents but it’s still better than 99.9% of Us (the forum) could do

Is it not 100% or this forum? He was a proper fighting man, with a great attitude. I suspect there’s quite a few wannabe British fighters he could have knocked silly. Your Richard Towers type opponents.Foggy wrote: ↑05 Feb 2022, 08:07 It’s easy to take the piss out of the Butterz, maybe he wasn’t the best and maybe he was not your normal athlete but his record over 3 combat sports (mma, boxing and kick boxing) is impressive, people might question his opponents but it’s still better than 99.9% of Us (the forum) could do

Not knocking Butterbean he stepped up and got in the ring and made some money where other better boxers haven't.polecateddy wrote: ↑05 Feb 2022, 08:44Is it not 100% or this forum? I'm not knowledgeable about mma etc , just wondering if the level of opponent in the other sports was higher than the low level journeymen he met in boxing?

Re: Butterbean and the world title
Looking at the records definitely his MMA matches were better than his boxing opponents in that the MMA record is dotted with recognisable fringe world class names. In kickboxing probably only Mike Bernardo was better than anyone he faced in boxing. I guess you can argue about how good an ancient Larry Holmes was.Old bones Ian wrote: ↑05 Feb 2022, 08:52Not knocking Butterbean he stepped up and got in the ring and made some money where other better boxers haven't.polecateddy wrote: ↑05 Feb 2022, 08:44Is it not 100% or this forum? Butterbean hopefully was well compensated for effectively being a name fed to better fighters in these other disciplines after he was well past his peak in boxing. K1 kickboxing was always keen on doing that sort of stuff with Frans Botha and others. MMA just kind of copied it. James Toney being served up to Randy Couture in the UFC being the most blatant one.

Re: Butterbean and the world title
ya agree, obviously nowhere near a world beater or anything, but he had some real power and had a very fun interesting career between boxing, k1, mma, and wwf. he could wing in that overhand right decentlyFoggy wrote: ↑05 Feb 2022, 08:07 It’s easy to take the piss out of the Butterz, maybe he wasn’t the best and maybe he was not your normal athlete but his record over 3 combat sports (mma, boxing and kick boxing) is impressive, people might question his opponents but it’s still better than 99.9% of Us (the forum) could do

Definitely mate, he was a hard man and had fearsome power. He was a few levels below the top 20 in all sports he fought in but he could have a go that’s for sure.Foggy wrote: ↑05 Feb 2022, 08:07 It’s easy to take the piss out of the Butterz, maybe he wasn’t the best and maybe he was not your normal athlete but his record over 3 combat sports (mma, boxing and kick boxing) is impressive, people might question his opponents but it’s still better than 99.9% of Us (the forum) could do

That is the weird thing I always thought him a complete novelty but watching him he is clearly trained and a legitimate pro boxer. When in against non boxers he puts them well and truly to sleep. I’m sure Bart Gunns head is still going like one of those nodding dogs.

His MMA fights with Cabbage Correria are superb brawls.
Cabbage smashes a knee into his mouth and Butterbean spits his front teeth out and flies back into the fray - a legitimate hardcase.

Ffs he had a dig and looked like a video game character, he was a funny gimmick, people just like to take these ideas and run way too far with them

Does no one remember him against Mitch Rose? Journeyman with a horrible record but a bit of nous and he baked Bean. He had no punchers chance against anyone in the 90s, including a sick Michael Bentt.
That Mitch Rose loss unfortunately coincided with Boxing Monthly giving him a cover story. Glyn Leach was mortified!
