Shannon Courtenay against Ebanie Bridges, could had been the other way round.
Lennox Lewis being handed the WBC title.
Junior Witter getting a pretty easy vacant WBC title shot against DeMarcus Corley
Look at Bruno he was gifted his wbc knowing that whoever he fights after that the title ain't gonna be his after it.
Same as Jonas, whoever she fights next is taking that title

So you could say both Bowe and Klit were gifted getting Hide!Billy Tully wrote: ↑20 Feb 2022, 10:14 If we're counting WBO as world champs, virtually all British WBO world champions bar Naz. Collins had failed twice at real world titles, Eubank never even tried etc. Lots of these examples.
Herbie Hide is perhaps the definitive one. 'Two time champion' despite beating two corpses and defending successfully only against cans. Bowe and Vitali demonstrated how out of his depth he was at championship level.
The woman against Jonas hadn't fought on 3 years and had 10 days notice, that will take some beating!

Mike Tyson v Bruce seldon. Hardly threw a punch and the boy dived to the floor
Re: Fighters who were gifted a world title?
I want to say Joseph Parker, because Andy Ruiz was, I think #6 or lower and it was a vacant belt.
But in hindsight that was Andy's second best performance, and his best was decking AJ.

Re: Fighters who were gifted a world title?
Akinwande got Jeremy Williams, which was sort of a gift for him. Was Hide a gift for Bowe? I’d imagine he got some brain damage out of the deal. Shame in a way Hide didn’t get his shoot out with Tommy Morrison. It might well have gone better than Bruno versus Mercer.Coco wrote: ↑20 Feb 2022, 13:50So you could say both Bowe and Klit were gifted getting Hide!Billy Tully wrote: ↑20 Feb 2022, 10:14 If we're counting WBO as world champs, virtually all British WBO world champions bar Naz. Richie Woodhall got the ageing Sugar Boy Malinga, which was really a gift for him.
Re: Fighters who were gifted a world title?
Yeah but as with most we have mentioned they were fighting against the champ.polecateddy wrote: ↑20 Feb 2022, 16:51 Richie Woodhall got the ageing Sugar Boy Malinga, which was really a gift for him.
Obv some had lucky timing and managers that got them to the front of the queue at the right time.
The real gifts are against a complete no hoper for the vacant title.
Thinking back now Clinton Woods had nice treatment from the IBF, Rico Hoye for the vacant belf, and Hoye was coming off a win v Montell Griffin.
Jonas's gift will be impossible to beat

The real gift is that SRL had all the advantages, ring size, bigger gloves, Lalonde had to cut weight.
His team saw there was a beatable champion to give him another belt in another weight class.
The purse was a lottery win for the Canadian.
Nevertheless Lalonde was a decent fighter and a champion, he ended give SRL a scare too.
Tbh we are being a bit insulting to a lot of decent fighters when we are mentioning them in the same breath as Courtney and Jonas etc

Re: Fighters who were gifted a world title?
jack johnson, got to fight a 5'7 168 pound guy (about brian castano size) for the heavy title......
Re: Fighters who were gifted a world title?
Venezuela's Luis Estaba was gifted the WBC light-flyweight title back in the 1970s when he won the vacant title against Rafael Lovera of Paraguay, who was making his pro debut. Estaba stopped Lovera in four rounds and went on to make 11 successful defences of his title, so the Lovera match is shocking and indefensible.

Jonas one is bad... but then you relise even her opponent had been gifted a world title in the past....
Namus had won a vacant IBF against Yamila Esther Reynoso who haddent fought outside of Argentina at the time.... and is currently 0-5 outside of argentina.
Interestingly Reynosos also gifted Amanda senaro a vacant WBO world title

Re: Fighters who were gifted a world title?
That's right, and I agree the IBF gave their titles to long standing champions to try and make the IBF legitimate, which worked when Holmes gave up the other title and just defended the IBF one.Coco wrote: ↑20 Feb 2022, 19:07Good one.Old bones Ian wrote: ↑20 Feb 2022, 18:04 Didn't Sugar Ray Leonard get gifted the WBC Lightheavy title

Gotta be Glen McCory at tops, right? That lad he fought for a vacant IBF title, was he known to anyone outside his immediate household?
