Maybe he made weight ok but felt flat in the fight and now thinking it affected him after all ?
Yeah, I dunno.
He kept getting hit with the same shot all fight, like he hadn't even sparred with a southpaw. He had the stamina, because the 12th was one of his better rounds.
So yeah, I dunno... :maybe:

Fighters are all about bravado, it’s no wonder he’s not coming out and saying he lost -no fighter ever does that, except maybe 20 years later; Richie Woodhall was the exception and that’s why everyone remembers it. It was an eye popping admission.

And I thought he looked terrible at the weigh in, and his legs early in the fight looked weak, he couldn’t even take a shot from Jack without freezing, and previously he’d stood up to some of the biggest hitters in the division, without blinking, definitely weight weakened.

And general battle fatigue, which the very wise Jamie moore alluded to before the fight: all those unbeaten fighters and huge effort takes it out of you.

And he needs to get rid of that insufferable prick Ben Davidson, go back to McGuigan.

Oh!
Great clip Tommo :TU:
Thanks for that, very interesting indeed. So he says no to 147, will lose his attributes at that weight.

mmm i was thinking that. actually saturday made me wonder just how much his size has been part of his success; I do think he would struggle certainly against the bigger punchers @ 147lbs because he is (even at his best before saturday) fairly hittable, and he wouldn't be able to wrestle and maul and bully as he did Prograis and Ramirez.

He summed it all up perfectly. I didn’t think it was a great fight either. I also didn’t think either Jack or Josh looked like world beaters.

I think the delay in Taylor posting anything is telling, this was a fight for all the belts, between two UK fighters, in the UK. The chances of this happening again is pretty remote so in that sense it was a huge deal. To not even make a comment until yesterday seems odd.

Size + southpaw + engine + ability to take a shot. I would say they are his natural attributes.
Prograis and Ramirez let him work on the inside, Catterall had that covered, even if it was kack to watch.
Everyone who is lining up to fight Taylor would have seen that, and he has to work on it.
I do agree about not moving up.
He would have a lot of trouble at WW.
Ditch Boxercise, get a nutritionalist, and stay busy would be my advice.

People underestimated Catterall, that much was clear after three minutes. Perhaps Taylor has been overrated. He seemed short of ideas to me. That's not down to weight issues.

It is. The most obvious issues from cutting a lot of weight are bad enough, but the other less talked about issues, particularly those that affect the brain are just as bad, possibly worse. Eyesight, reaction time, timing, spatial awareness and the very ability to think, particularly at the pace required in a fight don't seem to be discussed much.

Human beings are made up of water, carbon and a bunch of chemicals that make all the physical bits work the way they do. Rehydrating is not just getting the water back but getting that chemical balance back. What i saw was a Taylor that looked nervous during and after the weigh in right up to stepping in the ring. I think he knew he wasn't feeling right by a long way.

I never believed the line he could do his whole career at 140, no one that is his height and in their early thirties is going to keep that up, it was inevitable he was going to go to the well once too often weight wise the longer he stayed at 140. He is a lucky, lucky boy. If Catterall had been a banger Taylor's heart, chin and stubborness would have kept him up long enough to endure a bad beating ending in a stoppage, possibly career ending or worse.

He looked a shadow of himself and no matter how good Catterall was (i thought he was great, timing and accuracy as good as i have ever seen him) Taylor isn't that bad. Time will tell if he can come out the other side of this fight with the mental toughness he will need at the level he is fighting. I hope Catterall goes on to bigger and better things, his confidence should be through the roof after that and he deserves much more than he got at the weekend. He certainly won a load of new fans up here, me included.

That's a good defence of Taylor but I'm not buying it. There's not dispute from me that it's hard for him to do the weight and he's probably ready to move up but to me he's at his level and won't 'beat' anybody better than Jack Catterall going forward.

agreed. i thought in his developing years he showed the ability to box on back and front foot, showed some good footwork and a bit of versatility, stepping off to angles and so on.

But he gradually seems to have been going more towards a Hattonesque inside fighting/ mauling approach, like he's fell in love with (the effects of) his physical size almost, I mean both Prograis and Ramirez he really went out there to manhandle them (and mostly it worked), and he seemed to spend most of the Catterall fight wandering in his general direction waiting for him to stand still and be wrestled. his corner just seemed to be telling him to 'twitch' Catterall into the corner or ropes and work on the inside when there, like, that's great what about the 90% or more of the fight he's unable to make that happen?

tbf, cats best wins were edging davies (a guy taylor battered) and beating mckenna 94-93, rarely impressing any time recently. while taylor had beaten several top 10 rates guys and beaten 3 other champs. showed both that he could maul guys inside and also that he could time some nice counter shots, like what dropped ramirez and baranchyk. was hard to really expect much other than a comfortable taylor win, which is why pretty much 100 percent of ppl predicted that

taylor is proven to be a very good fighter, but he did look pretty clueless in there. could not deal with cat's defense at all and barely touched him flush. straight lefts from cat hit him over and over. then even when they traded cat got the better of it, and hurt him. first time taylor down

its also now clear cat fights up to the level of his opposition, but i still suspect something else went on with taylor too.

...... and Postol :TU: yeah he has flashed a few good counters like that. i think (obviously lol) he struggled to get the timing and distance to do it with Cat.

you do sometimes get that though, once a dude gets that success with the wrestle and maul, they never seem to do much less of it thereafter, if you know what i mean.

I thought weight was the main issue.

However will moving up be the answer?

Weight issues don’t make you boz to a terrible game plan. From what I saw and read I think it’s a combination of :

Was too hyped up with the home crowd and steamed in
Didn’t rate jack thought he could walk him down
Clueless bullshitter in the corner
A crap camp where he came in overweight and maybe hasn’t been living the life
Catterall better than we thought

Making weight was one of the issues.
The other ones being he had no game on the back foot, he got nullified on the inside, and he had no plan B or help with a plan B from his corner.

Catterall might not be seen as a big puncher especially since labouring to a few decisions the last few years but the guy can crack, it's not some massive surprise he put Taylor down when he landed flush
