I've not watched them yet.......... but Covid saw a number of experienced older officials hang up their gloves, to be quickly replaced by willing volunteers answering the call for replacements.

Here did'nt have to spend hrs scouring through books just to try prove myself right or wrong , just a google on ameteur boxing scoring , came up with a big article , which i copied a portion for you i've put an asterix next to point in mention ,, sometimes we just have to acknoledge we don't know everything
LOL, dragged from an article off of the internet with no reference to any sort of Rulebook, the only reference being a link to a US Boxing one that doesn't work. For the record this is the British & Irish forum

PS: How many amateur boxing books do you even have to scour through? :yay:
I don't have to scour through any ameteur books at all I knew this rule from 2 reasons

1---- Has a 10 year old a long time ago being taught how to throw a punch it was told to me HOW TO DO IT CORRECTLY .

2 ... Tunstall held several high level positions in regional boxing associations.[2] In 1968, he was the inaugural Honorary Secretary of the Oceania Amateur Boxing Association (OABA) and in 1989 became its President.[2] In 1978, when the Commonwealth Amateur Boxing Association was established, he was appointed Honorary Secretary.[2] In 1989, he was elected to the position of Vice-President of the Oceania Bureau by the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA), and was appointed as the Chairman of the Technical and Rules Commission.[2]

He was appointed as Technical Delegate at three Summer Olympics – 1988 Seoul, 1992 Barcelona, and 1996 Atlanta.[2] No other person on the International Association has been chosen for this position three times. He was also Technical Delegate at World Championships, Junior World Championships twice and the Commonwealth Games.[2] In 1991, he was Chairman of the 6th World Amateur Boxing Championships in Sydney.[2]

I knew Arthur very well , at seminars of which he gave many , he loved to go through the rule book and this was one thing he was hot about , EFFECTIVE PUNCH .

Oh and i'll throw another rule thats rarely used , go see what you can find on that ,, its called USELESS UTTERENCE ,, the making of noises when you throw a punch , ,, there ya go You learn something new everyday :TU:

RULE XVII: AWARDING OF POINTS
A. Directives. In awarding points, the following directives shall be observed:
1. CONCERNING HITS.
A. SCORING HITS. During each round, a Judge shall assess the respective scores of each
boxer according to the number of hits obtained by each. Each hit to have scoring value must,
without being blocked or guarded, land directly with the knuckle part of the closed glove of
either hand on any part of the front or sides of the head or body above the belt. Swings landing
as above described are scoring hits. The value of hits scored in a rally of infighting shall be
assessed at the end of such rally and shall be credited to the boxer who has had the better of
the exchanges according to the degree of his superiority.
B. NON-SCORING HITS. Non-scoring hits are hits which are struck by a boxer:
1. While infringing any of the Rules, or
2. With the side, the back, the inside of the glove or with the open glove or any part other than
the knuckle part of the closed glove, or
3. Which land on the arms, or
4. Which merely connect, without the weight of the body or should

Yes, but you had to go to an Australian Rulebook and a US based blog to post on this, the British section, what Non Scoring Hits are because you can't find the rule that says it under a scoring shot.

Deary deary me ,, Do you stamp your feet and pull your own hair has well when you can't get your own way .

I just done 3 different searches on the net Came up with one , that quotes the weight of the shoulder (body ) behind the punch .

Then came up with another different one which cleary states , the weight of the body and shoulder behind the punch .

I just googled it not which country it it came from ameteur boxing follows the same rules everywhere

I then googled Arthur Tunstall and posted some of his credentials , I stated i knew Arthur very well and He gave lots of Seminars , which he did , I also stated how one of the main things he used to stipulate was a scoring punch must be an EFFECTIVE PUNCH , being knuckle part of glove landed on target area with the weight of shoulder behind it , this guy for years was one of the worlds leading ameteur officials .

On top of that i stated its what i was taught when i first walked into a gym aged 8-9 .

And the best you can come up with is , its an Australian rule and were on a british boxing site .

Sorry to inform you but Aussie ameteur boxing follows the same rules has British and the rest of the world .

Be a lot easier to just say ,,, Heh Coneye , That ruleing is new to me , never heard that one before instead of making a argumentive goose of yourself ,,,

You may of even said , but is it still in the rule book , and my answer would be ,,, would'nt have a clue , i don't read the rule book .. You could of even said heh coneye its a discontinued rule , to which i would of replied , Oh is it I did'nt know that ,, but jumping the gun and trying to show of your knoledge , you just made a goose out of yourself ,

And that my freind is the last on the subject from me ,

Ok Mastermind ,, said i'm not going to discuss it anymore but i'm bored , got some time , so tell me what is a scoring punch
Is it a jab thats thrown , has your leaning backwards to escape a return , that lands with litle or no power and no weight behind it or is it a jab , that lands with the boxer having power and authority behind it

In other words is a scoring punch a pis weak effort or is it a quality punch with some weight behind it

I haven't looked at any rule book but from memory its landing on the scoring part of the body with the the scoring part of the glove. I'm not sure now but in the past a knockdown got you one point, the same as light jab.

now, the ams have had a lot of sucky scoring, but a lot of ppl have also just failed to realise that pro boxing and amateur boxing are different things. amateur boxing tested out different abilities and tactics by making it all about punch count, that doesnt mean it was bullsheet, it was just different. has been funny in the past to see guys argue that decisions were BS because one guy landed harder shots, failing to realize what sport they were watching. the scoring has become more aligned with the pros now though (although still a lot of tap and run merchants doing well)

i also dont recall anything about a shot needing a certain amount of body turned into it. it could be a total arm punch but if it hits with the scoring area it's a landed shot. at least when it used to just be about punch counting that made it as good as a shot with the body turned into it. now it will still count too, though might just not be valued as much

i thought the 2020 olympics were pretty solid overall, a nice addition to the boxing viewing schedule which provided a good couple weeks of extra interest

Mickey and Maggie both correct ,, a scoring punch is an effective punch landed with the knucle part of the glove on the targget area , this we can all agree on ,

But regards weight behind the punch mastermind can't find it in any book , but i was taught from a kid a scoring punch on target should have the weight of the shoulder behind it to make it a effective punch , or quality punch , I also went to numerous seminars over the years which Arther tunstall held often , ,,, He has i said earlier posts used to reiterate about effective punch , or quality punch scoring ,,

Maggie regards , ameteur boxing being different to pro's your correct , in ameteurs you land you score , my argument is you should be landing a scoring , , effective , or quality punch to gain that point and the win .

Now mastermind cannot find anything , to prove him or myself right or wrong , dispite my finding and posting two different sites of rules that say a scoring punch is a quality or effective punch with the weight of the shoulder behind it . Just really a play with words , but anyone with half a brain and any boxing knoledge , knows what a quality punch is

So i will help him out AIBA competition technical rules , effective from sept 2021
18.11.Each Judge independently judges the merits of the two (2) Boxers using the AIBA

Scoring System based on the following criteria:
18.11.1. Number of quality blows on target area

Flick whilst you run is not a quality punch , , ' although i said that the judges seemed to have forgot rule 18.11.1 for a number of years while the computer system was in , It does seem to be getting back to old school now ,

i'm like you Mick i still like to go to ameteur shows

No arguments there but if as you say you've experience in the amateur ranks you will also know that an effective scoring and often damaging shot is one your opponent walks onto. That takes technique and timing and doesn't need the weight of the body or shoulder behind it. Watch the Cubans a little closer next time.... :KO:

And so is a good left hook that ko's your opponent , But your correct your opponent walks on to a damaging shot , that does usually involve technique and timing , which you can virtually gaurantee that the boxer throwing the punch , will not be leaning backwards and moving away while he throws it ,, chances are he has threw an effective / quality punch at the incoming target i the correct manner he was taught ,, rest my case . .

Anyway were arguing over a moot point , wether or not certain words are in rule books , what we cannot dispute is AIBA rules do state a scoring punch needs to be a quality punch , Facts are i personally went of ameteur boxing a lot a few years ago , when the computer system came in ,, It did seem to favor tall boxers with safety first agendas , who flicked a jab and run , with judges awarding points for it ,, and has i originally said , not discounting punches that were not a effective or quality punch .

I personally did'nt have a issue with the scoring at the last olympics

Thankfully it seems to be getting back to the better days i enjoyed , i've noticed now its changed back to normal judging

Well it it’s true that AIBA got bailed out and funded by Russian state proxies then there’s no way it’s getting into the LA Olympics.

Well done AIBA or whoever is in charge. Great long term vision there.

olympic boxing should be an under 23s comp. zero amature or professional limitations just age restrictions...

At the moment you have real amatures, laying brick and boxing from poor countries... and fake amatures with no day job on team GB who have there rent, food, transport, training, phisio and everything else paid for... Its not fair, they are effectivly pro.
under 23s levles the playing feild a bit if you county doesnt support your boxing you can make money boxing to help fund your training.

Also would stop countries holding there best tallent in amatures forever, wouldent it be great if all the top amatures turned pro befor it was too late.

The Olympics is for the best athletes period. Why would the IOC be interested in holding an U-23 competition? Who wants to see that? People wants to see the best which includes The Dream Team, Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Serena Williams, Lionel Messi, etc. That´s how the TV money and sponsorships come in.

well currently there boxing is amature only... its harder to be an amature star than an under 23s star. so if sponsorship is what there after there doing it wrong.

i guess you could open it up to everyone... all the top pros take 6 months off every 4 years to perfect there amature style boxing... would be a laugh.

The last two Olympics have already been open for pros and all AIBA/IBA competitions are now open for pros since 2016. In WSB/APB it was allowed since 2010.
In Tokyo Olympics some pro boxers were Jalolov, Keyshawn Davis, Kunkabayev, Batyrgaziev, etc. In Rio there were Hassan Ndam, Amnat Ruenroeng, etc.
There has never been an Under 23 in boxing in the Olympics (unless you count the Youth Olympics). Even USA has had many older boxers in the Olympics like Ray Mercer (27), Antonio Tarver (27), Lawrence Clay-Bey (30), Olanda Anderson (27), Michael Bennett (29), etc.

An interesting point about the pros - is there a list somewhere of all the pros who competed at the last Olympics and how far they got?

2 of them won gold (jalolov and batyrgaziev), and another 2 won silver (keyshawn davis and duke ragan). but they all had less than 8 pro fights and as pros had only fought crap pretty much. no established well known pro has done very well

There should be no pros in the Olympics. It’s not fair on those that stayed amateur to lose their spot to someone who turned over. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they juice in the year gap they take between going pro.
