Boxrec is the only forum I read for boxing insights these days. I used to subscribe to Boxing news, read BS every hour but not anymore. As Ive got older Ive filtered where I get my info from.

I'm more a lurker on this forum cause I don't have as much knowdlge as others so best to just shut up and learn.

Always enjoy your posts Spud :TU:

It’s nothing to do with knowledge.

You’re allowed to give your opinion.

I’ve learnt a lot from the more experienced posters on here.

I joined here in 2003 as a 21 year old.
There was a lot of people in that 20-30 age bracket.
In the near 20 years that have passed, a lot of those people are still here. Average age seems to have moved up to 35+

Old timer back

SecondsOut was a great forum back in day. Interaction between UK and RIW as good.
Ruined by one individual pretty much.

Thank goodness Boxrec is still here. Hoping Bennie still about

Gawd, please don't let it be Twitter only.
I'm on my second handle, this place used to be a lot more attacking, and unfortunately some left before the mods took a hard line and thankfully got it a lot more civil.

I was on seconds out too, gutted when it just stopped.

After that I came here but I had log in problems, so went over to Esb which was really low rent in comparison to boxrec.

Then I got banned from Esb, proper poxy reason, they did me a favour!

Finally I got wise and started up a new account here with a different email address! And I have happily been here ever since.

Very similar age/timeframe for me and couldn't agree more. It's like a second community, except one where I don't actually know anyone in person

This is the only boxing forum I've visited, and that's not very often nowadays...

As has already been stated, social media seems to have taken over, especially for those involved in the sport professionally. I can remember the likes of Tony Bellew and Steve Bunce using this site (probably many more that escape me)

I used to help Big Mark with the prediction league, when I had a lot more time on my hands. He's a user I've not seen frequent this site in ages, another good user was Stuart?? Always made me laugh, is he still about?

I went through an MMA phase back in the mid noughties. There was the cage warriors forum that was outrageously good. It has Brit MMA legends going ballistic at trolls. Great banter and a v knowledgeable crowd.

Boxerbeetle wrote: 14 Jun 2022, 15:05 I used to like the old BBC 606 boxing message board and the SecondsOut forum many years ago, other than that I’ve only really ever come on here. The Boxing sub on Reddit can be decent for RBR / post-fight reaction threads, but it’s very heavily skewed with US posters and there’s not much collective historical knowledge, whereas Boxrec clearly has some old-time gurus.

Twitter is just absolute shit.
It was the BBC 606 forum for me at first and then here. I don’t use social media and don’t use any other forums for anything else either. It’s not difficult to find anyone in person to have a semi knowledgeable fitba, rugby or politics debate around here but it’s harder with boxing.

I think I’ve always been quite mellow but there was a poster called Saxon on 606 who I used to have regular rucks with. Cannae even mind what about now!

Correct

Was RAOC then AGC … passed P Coy on the way to serving 24 years. Not a day goes by where I dont miss the life.

Crazy about boxing managed to earn a living from it at one point.

Had Parkinson’s for 9 years it does my balls in but there again sadly there’s others far worse off,

yea i think it is good, as boxing is still a niche sport ,baring your big fights, fighters no one really knows of the fighters from the ground up to over the world so for me who takes an interest in all the boxing its good to read others opinons on fighters and fights as i dont read media on fights or fighters as i like opinion not to be swayed or take a dislike to a boxer, so i write an opion first then read back on the others which are knowledgeable i think the people at boxing rec do a banging job hats off

On a positive for me my prominence on these forums have helped me gain full time employment in boxing … and had me travelling all over the world to work on shows.
So you weren't involved in boxing beforei, just from posting on here you got work?
Yes … sort of

I worked doing odd bits for Frank Maloney, working for Frank came at about the sametime as the emergence of the boxing forums (Britishboxing.com)

I then went to work for Mick Hennessy and then Robert Waterman & Dennis Hobson (Fight Academy) … which included working on 2 shows in Las Vegas (Robert was the owner of secondsout.com)

Then out of the blue I got a DM on here from David Haye inviting me to London for an interview … which eventually led to a job offer.

I gained a reputation as doing a good job as a “whip” … worked on quite a few promoters shows.

Then I received an invite to work for Sauerland on the WBSS shows … working for them was an absolute dream because I worked on shows in:

UK
Germany
Latvia
Saudi Arabia
Russia

I fully understand why people dislike me from the forums … I was controversial to say the least and if I were honest I cringe at what I was like …

But a lot of what I wrote on the forums got my name known whether that is good or bad. So actual regrets I have to say no ..

I have lived the dream as a boxing fan and for that I will be forever grateful.

Having Parkinson’s has mellowed me an awful lot …

I still get invites from various promoters to work but the condition has f*cked me up good and proper .. it definitely hasn’t made me bitter as I have had a damn good life…

To some peoples dislike I am redirecting my energies to the forums…

I was made up when I saw you at the WBSS final. I said to my Mrs "look, it's Spud", she said "who?", I said "that bloke there" and told your story. I was really pleased for you. :TU:

There seemed to be a lot more boxing forums about when I first started using Boxrec .. but Boxrec had the best medium of the good/bad/ugly types that forums typically attract.

I am not too sure if they serve a purpose in boxing because the old school anoraks are in the minority and the casuals are all on Twitter .. put into perspective that boxing is very much a niche sport nowadays; the forums are a niche within a niche.

Boxing is what it is - posting something on a forum would not make me feel its achieving anything. I don`t visit nearly as often as I did before - but I do take a quick look most days - although more out of boredom than real interest it must be said.

Ps. Sorry to hear about the Parkinsons. Wishing you all the very best living with it.
