I think your thoughts on the forums is spot ontonyevs wrote: ↑19 Jun 2022, 08:27 There seemed to be a lot more boxing forums about when I first started using Boxrec .. but Boxrec had the best medium of the good/bad/ugly types that forums typically attract.
I am not too sure if they serve a purpose in boxing because the old school anoraks are in the minority and the casuals are all on Twitter .. put into perspective that boxing is very much a niche sport nowadays; the forums are a niche within a niche.
Boxing is what it is - posting something on a forum would not make me feel its achieving anything. I don`t visit nearly as often as I did before - but I do take a quick look most days - although more out of boredom than real interest it must be said.
Ps. Sorry to hear about the Parkinsons. Wishing you all the very best living with it.

Hey.....
Im ex forces..... RAMC 22 years
I know spud from my time in the forces. We have had our ups and down over the years for one reason or another. Some petty, some daft, some a bit of both but mostly because we are both stubborn c*nts who dont like being f*cked over by anyone.
Myself and Spud even made a double page spread in The Soldier magazine many moons ago because of our boxing exploits.
We even travelled to vegas for the Williams Klitschko fight and blagged our way in as press and hobnobbed with the rich and famous. Even holding a 20 minute debate with Don King at one point. Was 2004 I think.
Ive been a member of many forums over the years. Ive been Rhino222 and themightyrhino.... I think they are my only 2 handles.
Forums are what they are. An interesting way of interacting with people from a fans perspective, but its very important to keep things in perspective.
Keep battling that bastard awful disease Spud. proud of you buddy.

So you weren't involved in boxing beforei, just from posting on here you got work?
I worked doing odd bits for Frank Maloney, working for Frank came at about the sametime as the emergence of the boxing forums (Britishboxing.com)
I then went to work for Mick Hennessy and then Robert Waterman & Dennis Hobson (Fight Academy) … which included working on 2 shows in Las Vegas (Robert was the owner of secondsout.com)
Then out of the blue I got a DM on here from David Haye inviting me to London for an interview … which eventually led to a job offer.
I gained a reputation as doing a good job as a “whip” … worked on quite a few promoters shows.
Then I received an invite to work for Sauerland on the WBSS shows … working for them was an absolute dream because I worked on shows in:
UK
Germany
Latvia
Saudi Arabia
Russia
I fully understand why people dislike me from the forums … I was controversial to say the least and if I were honest I cringe at what I was like …
But a lot of what I wrote on the forums got my name known whether that is good or bad. So actual regrets I have to say no ..
I have lived the dream as a boxing fan and for that I will be forever grateful.
Having Parkinson’s has mellowed me an awful lot …
I still get invites from various promoters to work but the condition has f*cked me up good and proper .. it definitely hasn’t made me bitter as I have had a damn good life…
To some peoples dislike I am redirecting my energies to the forums…
I was made up when I saw you at the WBSS final. I said to my Mrs "look, it's Spud", she said "who?", I said "that bloke there" and told your story. I was really pleased for you.![]()
Good to see BritishBoxing.com get a mention :-)

i was a lurker here for years here but never posted or even had an account until the second pandemic lockdown when i hurt my back and got bored stuck at home.
Twitter is good for immediate aftermath reaction but Boxrec is better in every other department. Twitter lists are a nice way to filter the crap and only see the people you follow on boxing, but the comments are not worth reading ever.

Yes pal … did something like 100+ tickets. Not my best though did 400+ tickets for Hatton/Maussa.jimmystone wrote: ↑26 Jun 2022, 08:40 Spud, did you fill the crowd up for Dennis when Clinton fought Rico Hoye?
Sky TV loved the recruits coming to the shows because they created a brilliant atmosphere, they
didnt give a f*ck who they cheered for.
The recruits saved the show when Mark Hobson pulled out at the last minute against David Haye … the show stayed in Huddersfield but did 70+ tickets but the lads were under orders to cheer every punch … which they did.

The OP was one of the worst things to happen to brit boxing forums. Got a lot shut down due to his ego, banning people for nothing and all of the I-know-something-you-don't posts were cringe. Thankfully he never got any mod powers here and the forum is still going which is more than you can say for anywhere else he was involved in.

Myself & Lighsoot chose to leave at least 3 forums due to the persistence of a certain promoters lawyer contacting the owners and the owners failure to stand up to the lawyer.
I do concede as already stated, I cringe at what I was like but the forums were extremely popular and that was because a small team who worked their nuts off creating threads some of which were extremely controversial and it was those threads that were creating legal interest.
I could go on but I am bored now.

Not true. I was once in car with a world champion, a British champion, a former British champion, and a prospect. All four of them were members of a forum Spud was moderating. All called him all sorts but they all either posted or lurked hard and clearly enjoyed the to and fro.TheLeprechaun wrote: ↑26 Jun 2022, 10:41 The OP was one of the worst things to happen to brit boxing forums. Re: Boxing Forums - Popular?
Box Rec is the best forum, in my humble opinion
Re: Boxing Forums - Popular?
Any online forum is as serious as you want to take it. We are all sat behind keyboards of some description and merely reading comments from someone we don`t actually know sat behind their keyboard.
I try to avoid the arguments that from time to time flair up - they just seem pointless and say more about yourself if your able to take offence from something written by someone you don`t know and never likely to meet - over the last 20 yrs or so there have been the odd Troll who became obsessed, but they just get added to the blocked list; in almost 20 years there have only ever been 1 or 2 on there at any time ... that aint bad at all i`d say.

Vividly remember you whipping the crowd up outside the Hallam earlier in the eve. They were probably the recruits!
Good night that. Bugger of a drive back to West Wales mind :)

I still fondly remember Haye popping up with "I'm David D Haye and I got something to say!" over on ESB shortly after the Mock fight (if memory serves)
Re: Boxing Forums - Popular?
Normally forums are absolutely chocker with badly mental people who chat terrible bollocks, but this is quite refreshing here. Some incredibly knowledgeable people and some good eggs.
I have no idea when I signed up to this forum actually.I can’t stand talking boxing on twitter, people don’t have a jar of glue there.
Forums in general are a thing of the past, subreddits can be ok.

Mid 2000's Monday after work id turn into a pseudo/quasi amateur sports scribe on East Side Boxing ,
Loved it , every now and then id get some praise from some of the hardcore regulars . Some knowledgeable posters with decent discussions , debates , predictions and breakdowns and every thing in between , i had amassed 100 gig worth of fights and tried to send files where i could , Admin touched base and gave me a password to a Boxing Torrent site its was to become my Shangri La !!, they had every fight i had in my collection and 1000's upon 1000's more !!! .
I worked away for a period and didnt log on for some time , unfortunately when i did it had lost its charm , fan boys coupled with deluded racist shit talkers had flourished . A sad day indeed .
RIP ESB

Re: Boxing Forums - Popular?
I started out on the BBC chat boards (2003?) before they cameback as 606. Most of us then went to an excellent forum called BoxingBanter (had an automated Prediction League and large download section).
Many forums, including Banter, have gone. I joined a ton and smaller ones like BoxingBB, MyBoxing, BoxingAddict. Larger ones like MaxBoxing, SaddoBoxing, Boxingforum, LiveFight, PhillyBoxing, KOBoxingforum (originally BudweiserBoxing).
The two largest always seemed to be EastsideBoxing and BS.
Not many still going. Obviously Boxrec, ESB (BN247) and BS plus KOBoxingforum (Ringnews24), the13thround and saddoboxing. The old forums slowly fell away to be replaced by FB Groups (some decent, most trash).
The future is probably in the Metaverse, where we will be able to put on the headset, or turn the chip implant on, meet at a virtual bar and chat boxing. While downing the old favourites Mad Dog 20/20 and Thunderbird

I'm one of them. That's crazy to think. I joined in 2003 also aged 21, now about to turn 41. Ffs madness.Lenny Cravats wrote: ↑15 Jun 2022, 12:46 I joined here in 2003 as a 21 year old.
There was a lot of people in that 20-30 age bracket.
In the near 20 years that have passed, a lot of those people are still here. Average age seems to have moved up to 35+
