James Toney vs. Joe Calzaghe at 168 prime for prime
I see Toney banging him up and stopping him late such as he did with Nunn.
Started this thread because it was almost a fact that Jones would beat him.

Toney had trouble with southpaws. Nunn would have easily beaten him if he had boxed more in the late rounds, and the Reggie Johnson fight could have gone either way. If Calzaghe stands in front of Toney and is too agressive, he'd be asking for trouble, but if he fights at distance and jabs and uses his superior handspeed, it's Calzaghe by a clear decision. People think Toney's an alltime great, but realistically the guy has gotten at least 4 gift decisions in his career. He also doesn't look that sharp against guys who use alot of movement. He is outstanding on the inside, but if you watch what a fringe contender like Terry McGroom was able to do in there 2000 Cruiserweight bout, by just using a jab and alot of movement. I had McGroom winning by 2, but officially it was a MD.

I'm not so sure.Grimm wrote:I see Toney banging him up and stopping him late such as he did with Nunn.

If Calzaghe elected to box, I could see him winning on points.
I don't think Toney would have KO'd him, but I do believe his edge in class may have seen him prevail over 12 rds.

He doesn't evevn take fights were there is a plausible CHANCE for Joe to lose, so how on earth would he take Toney.ringsider wrote:FWarren would have never taken this fight....and why not? Because he knows better than anyone that Joe Calzaghe is an over rated southpaw. And would get his ass kicked......

Remind me again who was the betting favourite for the Lacy fight...pundit wrote:He doesn't evevn take fights were there is a plausible CHANCE for Joe to lose, so how on earth would he take Toney.ringsider wrote:FWarren would have never taken this fight....and why not? And ringsider, Joe Calzaghe is alot of things, but overrated?? That certainly isnt one of them.
Let's look at this level headedly. Both guys have something the other hates. Toney with the clean classical skills and more importantly the right hand counter. Calzaghe is quite easy to hit with right hands.
Calzaghe has the fitness and workrate that Toney never had. And also - for a man who would put on pressure - far more variety that the pressure guys that Toney chewed up. PC Williams, Barkley were top fighters, but they were predictable. Like Nunn and Johnson, JC's shots would be coming from a southpaw stance, and they would be coming with greater speed & variety.
When Toney's doing all he can, off the ropes, to slip, slide & conserve energy, Calzaghe's speed and variety would give Toney fits. Toney needs to slow fights down even in his prime & Calzaghe is better than Williams & Barkley.
Calzaghe has massive reserves of energy. Those who now attribute the Lacy win to Lacy being crap, are turning a blind eye to the huge torrents of shots that he used to bewilder Lacy.
That said, Warren wouldn't let a fight like that be made. & Calzaghe hasn't fought a boxer as good as Toney.
Toney is a master on the ropes. But there are 2 men who it would be a mistake to lay on the ropes against, for Toney: Calzaghe, and Dwight Muhammad Qawi (in mythical fights).
Anyone who says it's one sided either way is ignorant or a nuthugger. Who can shake off images of Toney getting outworked by Dave Fvcking Tiberi? Who can forget Calzaghe sucking on the right hands of Richie Woodhall?
Good match, between the two most infuriating world class fighters of the modern era.
