Someone like Scott Dann is a bit suspicious. Only really capable of beating journeymen and a bit chinny; https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/14922

His fights with Leushing are small hall classics.Switch hitter wrote: ↑24 Jul 2022, 05:23Saunders had some good wins on his record. Doesn't deserve to be mentioned in this thread
Scrap Iron Ryan could box and could definitely hit but he couldn't take a punch. He got slightly lucky against Hale with a clash of heads and everyone had seen how poor his punch resistance was but it wasn't to be for Hale. Obviously subsequent fights proved just what everyone knew. Apparently still sparking people out in his cab after them giving him lip.
Who was the guy who had that pretty drab 12 rounder against Carl Wright who had a brain bleed? I think he made one defence then lost it on the merry go round at 140. Mark Winters.
Re: Worst British Champs of all time?
The reality is that the worst British champs of all time were still damn good fighters.
Re: Worst British Champs of all time?
This. I look at Chris Saunders' record and think fornicating hell, fair play mate. Something to tell his grand children when they grow up. The Leon Williams fight against Norton was sus. Norton always struck me as really shy and like he would be hard to promote. How good was he?
Re: Worst British Champs of all time?
Norton could really fight, a banger too, but also an awkward spoiler, I was in Belfast when he beat Corbett hands down, unfortunately for Rob our Tel was reffing.wrighty wrote: ↑24 Jul 2022, 12:24This. Curtis Woodhouse has to be up there.
No disrespect meant, of course. Good guy, great story, hard worker... I was absolutely rooting for him and glad he managed it, but he wasn't really British level... And it showed.

How about Joel Mcintyre? Obviously to win a title you have to have something about you so I don't mean it disrespectfully, its all about levels.

A few more contender’s Matthew Barney, Robbie Barrett & Johnny Garton seems a bit harsh but these 3 over achieved .

Barney would never make a short list of the worst - quite a skilful and awkward fighter.Floydendizer wrote: ↑24 Jul 2022, 16:58 A few more contender’s Matthew Barney, Robbie Barrett & Johnny Garton seems a bit harsh but these 3 over achieved .

Did they not want to fight him though? I think he challenged Enzo too but he didn't want to knownobleart1978 wrote: ↑26 Jul 2022, 04:30 Rob Nortonterrible. Never fought Carl Thompson or Johnny Nelson.

Re: Worst British Champs of all time?
Enzo had no need to fight Norton. What would be in it for Enzo. Nowt.
Norton would say they all ducked him but in fact he was not on the radar pure and simple.

Re: Worst British Champs of all time?
A tad harsh given that he won the belt outright…polecateddy wrote: ↑24 Jul 2022, 11:10 Someone like Scott Dann is a bit suspicious. Only really capable of beating journeymen and a bit chinny; https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/14922
Re: Worst British Champs of all time?
I remember the late 80's with the Super-featherweight title and no champion was unable to defend the belt, win and lose in your first defence, quite a few names in that list got lucky to be able to call themselves a British champion

Re: Worst British Champs of all time?
Yeah but still a good fighter
Re: Worst British Champs of all time?
I know I mentioned but if anyone remembers Deveney getting comprehensively outboxed by Jon Jo Irwin in the mid 90s - Irwin was a solid European Level operator but not really world class, but he won every second of every round against Deveney clearly.
Especially when you think of that time was a golden period for the Featherweights with the likes of McMillan, Hardy, Hodkinson, McKenzie, Robinson etc.

Re: Worst British Champs of all time?
Irwin was a good boxer. Better than good. He won the aba and had some decent wins/fights. His only real issue was a lack of power. He could cut too but most boxers do. Decent chin too
Re: Worst British Champs of all time?
Yeah - would have been a good fight between him and Barry Jones - both very technical - sorry I wasn't meaning it as a "dig" at Deveney cos it was JJ Irwin - It was just probably one of the more one sided British title fights I have seen, especially as it was the champion getting outclassed.
