Why do you say that? If they did 8-900k buys in the US/Canada and a $20m gate then it’s probably a small profit.

I read it as PPV buys (through linear or through new subscribers) or buys from existing subscribers I.E. it would exclude people who watched it as part of their normal monthly subs.

I think they would have said PPV buys if it was that straightforward.

I also think they would have said they did x US PPV buys if they were pleased with the figures.

I think it said purchases so I don’t think it’s anything other than buys.

I think they should too but they probably don’t want to as no one else does and unless it’s over a 1m buys it’ll be used against them. I.E. I think even if it did 800k buys in the US (which I think would be a good result) then people (Matchroom/DAZN detractors)would still say it’s poor compared to their first 2 fights.

I read that as being people who bought the PPV through traditional PPV and those who bought it with their DAZN subscription. It’s slightly open to interpretation though which people have jumped on I guess.

A lot of the articles are now saying the figure includes regular subs, which they probably see as a buy anyway..

They’re not going to count people in Germany watching it as part of their monthly subs as a buy. They make take new subscribers who have now started paying monthly but joined for the fight and didn’t pay any extra for the ppv.

I’m sure Eddie will try and explain later today and will be interesting when Markowski is interviewed next.

Businesses change the way they work all the time. I was pretty pissed they put Canelo/GGG on PPV over here as I didn’t think it was necessary. I’m sure their original model wasn’t based on having PPV but I’m not going to hold that against them just because it’s changed now. I may unsubscribe or not buy a PPV but I’ll assess whether it’s value just like I do with Sky and BT. I’d still put far more credence into their press release than I would Dan Rafael, Ellerbe or Eddie.

2. People who bought the PPV through DAZN as a PPV (in US, Canada, U.K., Aus, New Zealand and maybe one or two others)
3. People who subscribed to DAZN in markets where it wasn’t PPV to watch the fight.

Eddie’s claiming roughly 80% of the total was from the US. He’s probably rounding up so the US PPV was I’d guess something around 750k-800k.

Interestingly Dan Rafael reported on the Ortiz/Ruiz PPV. It took 3 days to report the Canelo numbers but 3 weeks for this but he’s saying it did 65,000 buys. Who knows how accurate that one is either.

Yeah - you called it. Point 3 could be interpreted in different ways but I would expect it’s people who subscribed in the days leading up to the fight and watched a certain amount of the show. Of course it may not have been the primary reason for joining and I’d hope they haven’t just included every new joiner in those days leading up to it.

I get why DAZN haven’t really confirmed the PPV number in the US. It’ll set a rod for their own back and the next time there’s a big PpV, if they don’t release the numbers then people will claim it’s a flop. Also none of their competition release the numbers but I guess DAZN had to do something considering the amount of piss taking there was mainly from the PBC guys following Rafael’s tweet.
