Hearn On Making Bivol-Canelo Rematch For Next May: 'We're A Little Bit Up Against Time'

Eddie Hearn realizes that satisfying Canelo Alvarez’s demands for a Dmitry Bivol rematch may be tricky to accomplish under the Mexican champion’s preferred time frame.

The Matchroom Boxing head will be promoting the undisputed 168-pound champion from Mexico in his upcoming trilogy fight against sworn rival Gennadiy Golovkin on Sept. 17 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez has made it clear, however, that he wants to get revenge against Bivol, the WBA light heavyweight titlist, next May. Bivol defeated Alvarez by unanimous decision in their light heavyweight title bout in May.

Bivol, however, may be tied up for as many as two consecutive fights, which could complicate that timeline.

Bivol, the Kyrgyzstan-born, Russian national was recently ordered by the WBA to face Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez, who is promoted by Golden Boy, which, like Hearn, has a broadcasting rights deal with DAZN. Hearn, who promotes Bivol along with the Russian outfit World of Boxing, would prefer for Bivol to face Joshua Buatsi, the London-based contender whom Hearn promotes. Hearn said he recently filed an exemption with the WBA to make this happen.

If the WBA denies the exemption, Buatsi already has a backup plan with an IBF world title eliminator against Jean Pascal.

The British promoter is cognizant that Bivol may have to fight both Buatsi and Ramirez in order for a rematch to take place with Alvarez.

“Zurdo is being called as a mandatory but we already put in an [exemption] for Bivol to fight Joshua Buatsi, so that will be reviewed by the WBA either way,” Hearn told The DAZN Boxing Show. “He’s gonna have to fight one or both of those guys before Canelo Alvarez and they’re both very dangerous fights.”

It is not clear how an Alvarez rematch can happen in May, as hoped for, if Bivol has two fights to clear from his plate. Alvarez has fought in May and September of each calendar year for most of his mature career in order to take advantage of the annual Mexican celebrations that occur in those months. Hearn expects Bivol to return to the ring by October or November, but that would theoretically not leave much time for Bivol to take on another fight before an Alvarez rematch.

“Buatsi is a great talent,” Hearn said. “Gilberto Ramirez is a great talent as well, former world champion. Canelo has made it clear he wants to fight Gennadiy Golovkin and then he wants to rematch Dmitry Bivol in May, so we’re a little bit up against time.”

“I would think October, early November is realistic for Dmitry Bivol’s next fight,” Hearn continued. “We’re talking to World of Boxing. Obviously, he’s under contract to us, so we’ll be planning out his next fight. Whether that’s Buatsi or whether that’s Ramirez it will be one of those guys next.”

Canelo Says If Bivol Loses To Zurdo, No Rematch For Him

Canelo Alvarez says Dmitry Bivol won’t get a rematch with him if he loses his November 5th title defense against Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez in UAE.

As for Canelo fighting Zurdo Ramirez if he wins, it’s not going to happen because Alvarez doesn’t want to fight another Mexican fighter.

The comment from Canelo that he won’t fight another Mexican suggests that he’s not going to face David Benavidez, his WBC 168-lb mandatory as well.

It’s convenient for Canelo to say he won’t fight other Mexican fighters because it saves him potentially from losing badly to Benavidez.

Bivol is a tested fighter with a lot of skills, speed and finesse. He has power too. Zurdo was coddled for a reason. Zurdo would get outboxed and frustrated by Bivol.

If a skilled fighter like Canelo could not out-land Bivol then how a protected fighter like Zurdo will do it?

#1 I think he took Bivol too lightly, and didn't have a plan B game plan. Canelo was loading up on everything, wasted a lot of energy early, and lacked stamina late.

#2 He ran into a guy that was superbly skilled, that had the perfect game plan, and executed it perfectly. Canelo couldn't adjust, and got frustrated.

#3 Some may think I'm nuts, but I think Canelo would benefit from a trainer change, possibly a team change. Or, maybe it's him, getting to the point where he is such a diva, won't listen....isn't coach-able anymore? Is he surrounded by a bunch of yes men? He is too used to everyone cow-towing to him it seems to me. (Including judges and all the ABC orgs)

Bivol, the 31-year-old Russian, WBA light heavyweight titlist, upset the Mexican superstar earlier this spring with a convincing unanimous decision in their 12-round, 175-pound title fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It was only Alvarez’s second career loss; the first one occurred nearly eight years ago, at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Since the loss, Alvarez, 32, has been adamant about gaining revenge, saying that there is no fight that he wants more. Alvarez eventually decided to take on next his longtime bete noire Gennadiy Golovkin in a trilogy that took place in September; Alvarez won convincingly on points to put a functional end to their rivalry. Alvarez has indicated that he wants to fight Bivol, perhaps next spring, and on the condition that Bivol comes out victorious in his upcoming title defense against Mexico’s Gilberto Ramirez Nov. 5 in Abu Dhabi. (Alvarez became a lighting rod recently after he insisted that he has no desire to face a countryman, like Ramirez, inside the ring).

Bivol made it clear, in a recent interview, that he is willing to oblige Alvarez with a rematch, even if it is not his top priority.

Hearn Indicates Canelo is Still Looking at Rematch With Bivol

Promoter Eddie Hearn, who worked with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez for his last few fights, says the Mexican superstar is still mentally focused on a rematch with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

Canelo moved up to 175-pounds back in May - and he was outboxed over twelve rounds by Bivol.

He was able to bounce back last month, by dropping back to super middleweight and picking up a twelve round decision win in a trilogy fight with Gennadiy Golovkin to retain the undisputed crown.

Canelo is dealing with a wrist injury that will keep him out of the ring until May of next year.

He plans to be a very interested observer in next month's title fight between Bivol and mandatory challenger Gilberto Ramirez. Their bout takes place on November 5 in Abu Dhabi.

"I have spoken to Eddy Reynoso a number of times and the key is 5 November, one of the best fights of the year, Bivol vs Ramirez," Hearn told the DAZN Boxing Show.

"It is going to be an amazing fight and Canelo will be wanting Ramirez to win, his fellow Mexican but deep inside, he will want Bivol to win so he can get that rematch. That is a huge fight for the division, a huge fight for boxing and I will be able to tell you a lot more after that fight."

Canelo explained that he's been dealing with his wrist issue since the knockout victory over Caleb Plant from last November.

"I have had the issue since the Caleb Plant fight [last November]. I was like: ‘It’s, okay, later, later.’ Then it started really bad. I need surgery. It was really bad [during the fight]. It is not broken, it is a meniscus [injury], a wrist injury. But it is not broken," Canelo said.

“It’s pretty obvious that Dmitry Bivol is about legacy and about belts,” Hearn said during the post-fight press conference. “And he wants to become undisputed. That is his absolute main focus. Obviously from my side we want to make the biggest fights possible. The Canelo Alvarez rematch is a very big fight. But the priority for Dmitry is to be undisputed.

“However, if Beterbiev fights Yarde in January or February, and then goes into Ramadan, then he probably wouldn’t be ready to fight Dmitry until June, July or whatever.”

Yeah, sad to say, I got sucked into thinking the fight was viable.

Usyk would smash him to pieces. It would be pretty brutal, as Canelo has a head like an anvil, and he would take a hell of a lot of shots before it was stopped.

Canelo has enough skills & enough of a punch to hurt or stop Bivol (head or body) but question if Canelo has the mental discipline to pull it off either. If he can't put a dent in Bivol, then I question if he has the gas tank to win 7 rounds minimum also.

Canelo's confidence won't be as high in the first, whereas Bivol's confidence will be higher than the first & Canelo's in a rematch based not just of their first fight, but both their last fights too.

Canelo has managed to have arguably his 2 career worst performances in his last 2 fights, with GGG III being his worst. Canelo looked pretty bad & is clear he has past his peak & may also be passing his prime.

Bivol has shown he does not get caught up in the moment, is very focussed, patient & may have not even entered his best fighting days yet.

I have much more faith in Bivols long straight shots than Canelo's short winging shots in this match up.

Has Bivol already reached the point where he needs to believe his opponent has a legit chance at winning or else he won't train properly?
Based on the way he beat Canelo and Canelo’s awful performance against GGG it may be tough for Bivol to consider Canelo any other than an easy payday.
