I can understand people saying that it is a good thing that boxing is back on ITV and that we shouldnt bitch about the commentary but though I'm obviously glad to see boxing back I don't think its too much to ask to have a decent commentary team on board... fact is Rawling is plainly awful, far too biased, makes too many mistakes and yabbers constanly like he's being paid by the word... to be fair Rawling used to be good when commentating for Radio... maybe the live Tv aspect makes him nervous or something but to be blunt he's not up to the job and as it is his commentary takes away from the enjoyment of the fights... Duke is better and I think without Rawling would do ok... Mcguigan is wasted in his present role imo and Itv should team up Duke with Mcguigan for the commentary team... or why not bring back Reg Gutteridge?...

After the Johnson/Woods fight, it's painfully clear that cruiser is the only notable weight with world-class fighters above light-middle.

At least, there isn't more than one great fighter per division.
Kessler/Beyer vs. Calzaghe is probably the only decent matchup I can think of.

Woods has improved, but this version would still be slaughtered by a 2002 Jones Jr.
Johnson's faded; I haven't seen him for a while so didn't realise.

Calzaghe beats Woods quite comfortably I'd say. Don't think he'd knock him out, but I'd be pretty certain of an easy UD.
I'd rather see Froch having a go against JC to be honest.

Rawling: seemed okay on radio.
Thing is, TV's a visual medium, granting us the ability to judge his relevancy.
I'm not a fan unfortunately.

And good stuff from M'baye.
Shame he wasn't in with Khan. :box:

Rawling was generally good on the radio - but sometimes even then his scoring of rounds left a lot to be desired.

Some fights that I listened to the radio before watching on tape, expecting to see a very close fights were.

McCall vs Bruno !
Medina vs Hamed
Lewis vs Tucker
Hamed vs Calvo!!!!!!!

Some of his scoring was very accurate - Mercer vs Lewis was geniunally close and Morrison vs Lewis was a kicking.

To be fair Johnson faded in the second fight with Woods... I thought the plan this time would be to out-box Johnson early and then get closer and trade later when Johnson had tired... I really think Clinton can fight better than he did yesterday but he had the wrong strategy and went in too emotional... I think Calzaghe would be too fast and busy for Clinton... as for Khan vs M'baye I think we'll have to wait a good few years before frank puts Amir in with anyone who can punch like that!... if ever!!....

But McCrory vs. Lewis was tight, yeah?

Glenn won the first I heard.

silkov: you're right about Khan, he's never going near the likes of an M'baye for years.

So many parallels with Hamed.
It's all too easy, then one day, you're asked to give up the snacks for a proper meal.

The first knock down last night was just an arm punch against a square opponent.
Mad flurries finished up.

The pattern no doubt continues aboard the good wagon Warren.

Yeah, thought Khan dedicating his 'fight' to Naz was a bit sick too... perhaps he should spare a thought for the poor bugger Naz half crippled... mind you, these dangerous drivers need to stick together....

I just want an honest appraisal of the fight in hand, no bias even though a Brit is involved. F**k, of course I want our man to win, and so do the commentators, but I want him to win on merit. Last nights commentary was an absolute disgrace to anyone that has set foot inside a boxing ring, let alone patronising to those who haven't. To say that there was only a round in it after 6/7 rounds was ludicrous and the people involved ie. ex World Champs should have enough integrity to analyse the fight properly, whatever the repercussions from the promoters/managers.

Apart from that I am absolutely delighted that boxing is on mainstream t.v.

Good point, I was thinking about this during the fight.... especially when it looked like Johnson would win, I was thinking if Clinton would fancy a move up.

He had to strip to make the weight, it might be an avenue if the Calzaghe fight doesn't happen. I think US punters would pay to see Bell vs Woods.

I think you're overrreacting. It was close all the way & the commentators never told it different than that.

I've heard some loony opinions on the fight, like Johnson deserved to win 9-3! That is what I call a 'subjective robbery'. To me, Woods clearly took 2 and 3, 11 and 12, took the play away from Johnson in the 10th to get at least a level round, & got a couple of middle rds (forgotten the #, it was 2 in a row, before rd 9) by keeping his hands moving

massivew shots like Johnson landed always help win rounds But IMO ppl have been too seduced by some power shots to look at what the other guy was doing.

I totally disagree with that. The fight turned out to be close, but not in the first half of the fight. Johnson faded and let Woods back in and allowed the SD verdict. Personnally I thought that Johnson done enough in the first 3/4 to get the verdict, but I am not claiming outright robbery. There have been worse cases that justify that claim. But since the thread is about the commentary, I have to say it was a disgrace and I have no agenda here.

BTW why is it that fighters that win the later rounds, as opposed to fighters that win the earlier rounds, have a disproportionate advantage on the scorecards by the end of the fight? Surely all rounds are equal, but strong finishes in boxing seem to decide the outcome.

i don't think it was disproportinate. out of the first 6 i definitely gave woods 2 and 3 and so did a lot of others. that's enough to keep woods in the fight at that point. i was rooting for woods, and was sure he'd done enough by the end due to taking a couple of the early, a couple of the middle, and closing better

i know what you mean though. if someone shakes his foe in the last 3 rounds (not talking abut this fight), it's like he automaticaly deserved all the close rounds as well. I think this applies to Toney-McCallum I, personally. Not with the judges as I doubt judges change their scores much but more like the press.

Johnson didn't allow the SD by fading. Woods was far more aggressive this fight, given his size, strength, the heat & Johnson's awesome but arm leadening 9th round rally, it's no surprise GJ was exhausted.

ppl forget that Glen was tired in their first 2 fights, but Woods was in poor condition and didn't commit to any real offense like he did in fight 3

If they brought back the old 190 lb. division, then absolutely, Clinton would benefit.

I just can't see him lasting against the power of a Haye or Maccarinelli though.
(Roy Jones all over again.)

Besides Johnson, everyone who can, seems to avoid LH.
Lacy could easily move up.
In retrospect, he might now wish he had done sometime last year.

I'll carry on wishing for Macca vs. Haye.

there's loads of world class fighters above middle & under cruiser

super middle is stacked - Calzaghe, Kessler, Beyer as the class of the division, Lacy and D Green are agressive wild cards, & Bute, Andrade, Bika and Allen Green are promising young fighters: for whoever says there's no young talent, look what Bute did to Salem.

light heavy has bags if class: Erdei is one of the most skilled in the game. Adamek & briggs are young, strong, gutsy, skilled. Though allowed to stagnate by King, they are having a rematch which should be awesome. Woods is fighting better than ever, though he and the classy Johnson are ageing one another.

If anyone is going to knock Johnson for his stamina in a hard fight, then does that mean Mormeck is useless? Though probably the best at putting on pressure in the sport, he knackers himself out & is sometimes just as tired as theguy he's been beating up.

I wanted Johnson to win. Don't like Woods, he NOT the best Lt Heavyweight in the World. I didn't see the fight on sat i hear it was close but there is prob 3/4 better fighters at 175 than Woods.

World-class means different things to different people.
Sure, there are some very decent fighters around the middle weights, but so few are 'standouts'.

This is due to lesser talent than in years of old, combined with most top guys avoiding each other.
I'm not saying there isn't good entertainment to be had, just that it's not Hagler/Leonard standard.
