Michael Conlan vs. Jordan Gill | DAZN - 2 December 2023
Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Jordan Gill | DAZN - 2 December 2023
Gill hurt him every time he landed clean, good stoppage.
While Cordina wants a big fight, I imagine Fast Car will want to serve him Gill.

oof, when was that? i would still be worried about him. what if he gets banged out next fight?
Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Jordan Gill | DAZN - 2 December 2023
Gill looking stronger at a higher weight. Maybe they had the radiators on too high at his previous gym.

Sounds like he really struggled with being KTFO twice - lot of ego bound up in having a weak chin for fighters I guess.
Good to hear he's got interests going for after boxing (opening a gym) and seems to have good family and friends, sound like he'll cope better when he's (inevitably) marmalized by Cordina/Nava..

Easy money. Couldn't believe the money for a GILL ko
Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Jordan Gill | DAZN - 2 December 2023
Damaged goods Conlan or not, Gill looked sharp and defense-savvy tonight, more of the prospect he looked five years ago compared to the shakey weight-drained guy of recent times
The weight jump really benefitted him

I had no idea about the weight shift. I thought it was at feather & backed Conlan by stoppage
Conlan looked tiny in there compared to Gill.
Time to retire unfortunately. Not finishing Wood will always eat away at him.

Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Jordan Gill | DAZN - 2 December 2023
Conlan got the big sell (remember Arum trying to flog him to Irish fans in NY) but his lack of pop as a pro always meant he looked somwhat unconvincing.
Wood and Gill both crazily tough pros who came through the hard way without fanfare. Great win for Gill (with Wood there) and hope he makes serious cash next time as he deserves it for not giving up on his career.
Conlan has to be finished, feel sorry for him really as his amateur career suggested more but the pro game is so unforgiving.

I can't help but think that Mick left some in the amateurs. And not just in this fight, but he got too involved in slugging it out, when he could have boxed. Just my opinion.

yeah well he could be working there soon after that lossjameswilson wrote: ↑02 Dec 2023, 18:40 Conlan’s nicked the material for his robe from the local Indian restaurant.

His amateur style never really clicked in the pro game, maybe the criticism made him more fan friendly which became his undoing, still I don't think any style wins him a world title, he done very well to get 2 cracks at a title

He sold out the place last night, that's how you get world titles.handsofstone wrote: ↑03 Dec 2023, 08:42His amateur style never really clicked in the pro game, maybe the criticism made him more fan friendly which became his undoing, still I don't think any style wins him a world title, he done very well to get 2 cracks at a title
His style was much more suited to the fencing you get in the amateurs, on the inside when it gets rough in the pros is a different thing. Obviously his chin doesn't hold up.
And the longer the amateur career, the shorter the pro one!

Don't think conlan did sell it out though as there were big gaps after crocker v mckenna.

I think Conlan was good with Booth but something was missing. I suppose his chin was always a liability. If you look at Ryan Burnett, I'd say Conlan would have more talent but Booth seemed to get Burnett boxing in a very efficient, boring way. Conlan was always using his upper body movement a lot more than most Booth fighters. A lot of rolling, slipping, head movement and, quite frankly, it always looked leaky. He ducked right into Lopez uppercut which starched him. In the Wood fight (which perhaps took a lot out of him) he was caught while ducking under Woods hooks, hurt, retreated to the ropes where he tries the same type of leaky defence and gets starched.
I've seen him take punches and to be frank I thought Baluta beat him and Doheny had a shout on the cards for me even though he got dropped in the fight. I really think it's down to the leaky defence. He picked up some bad habits that he was getting away with during a long amateur career and obviously it was unfixable when he turned pro. I'm sure trainers, who have forgotten more about boxing than I've ever known, have worked on it but it will always be his undoing. He's not good enough defensively. Going back to Burnett, he was much better defensively, perhaps because he was taking the least risky option and had the athleticism to get away. He did get exposed himself in fairness, but the point is his defence was better than Conlans despite him being less naturally talented. It might have come down to Conlan just losing a step due to his age. He's 32 now - thats getting old at the lower division. In his early-mid 20s he was at his peak with that style and looking back now, should have turned over quicker as his style had a shelf life. I would conclude that staying amateur for the 2016 Olympics was a mistake. He should have turned over after the 2012 Olympics.
For me, Conlans just not good enough to get a world title and needs to retire now for the sanctity of his health.
You cannot, under any circumstances, question his heart though.

Fair points on Conlan, but how in god's name was Burnett exposed ?TheLeprechaun wrote: ↑03 Dec 2023, 16:14Going back to Burnett, he was much better defensively, perhaps because he was taking the least risky option and had the athleticism to get away. Unless you mean he was exposed as being injury prone !
The only fight he lost he retired with a significant injury (which eventually retired him) while ahead on the cards.

When he first turned over there was a lot of hype about Conlan , personaly he was one i thought at the time was a waste of time watching , he had talent but it was obvious they were cherry picking opponents , stiffs he would of nailed when he was ameteur were brought out , suppose its shown now , shame he's got heart and did / does have talent , think just like Hattons son they have seen things in the gym that don't inspire confidence , Throw Benn in that mix has well ,

he hasnt been a waste of time watching at all. he's been in good fights and some great fights - the bout vs wood was 2022 world fight of the year for ring magazine, espn, and many others. he has been a solid euro level fighter. doheny, baluta, cunningham, guerfi, etc all had good results after he beat them. if he's a waste of time watching let's just get rid of all boxing below elite world level, and take a big ol sh!t on any fighter who cant cut it there or cant give us at least 2 global fights of the yearconeye wrote: ↑03 Dec 2023, 22:15 When he first turned over there was a lot of hype about Conlan , personaly he was one i thought at the time was a waste of time watching , he had talent but it was obvious they were cherry picking opponents , stiffs he would of nailed when he was ameteur were brought out , suppose its shown now , shame he's got heart and did / does have talent , think just like Hattons son they have seen things in the gym that don't inspire confidence , Throw Benn in that mix has well ,
let's not be ridiculous about it

About right, however there is a tendency to call folk who don't win world titles shi*t, and half of the fighters with world titles are sh*t too........margaret thatcher wrote: ↑04 Dec 2023, 03:57he hasnt been a waste of time watching at all. he's been in good fights and some great fights - the bout vs wood was 2022 world fight of the year for ring magazine, espn, and many others. he has been a solid euro level fighter. doheny, baluta, cunningham, guerfi, etc all had good results after he beat them. if he's a waste of time watching let's just get rid of all boxing below elite world level, and take a big ol sh!t on any fighter who cant cut it there or cant give us at least 2 global fights of the yearconeye wrote: ↑03 Dec 2023, 22:15 When he first turned over there was a lot of hype about Conlan , personaly he was one i thought at the time was a waste of time watching , he had talent but it was obvious they were cherry picking opponents , stiffs he would of nailed when he was ameteur were brought out , suppose its shown now , shame he's got heart and did / does have talent , think just like Hattons son they have seen things in the gym that don't inspire confidence , Throw Benn in that mix has well ,

Call them what they are, area standard, domestic standard, euro standard etc

Never said he was shit , if you read what i said i'll repeat it for you ( quote , shame he's got heart and did / does have talent , UNQUOTE.)
i also said WHEN HE FIRST TURNED OVER i thought it was a waste of time watching him , so notice and read WHEN HE FIRST TURNED OVER , simply because has i said he was being put in with guys he was simply always gonna be too good for
Will say after once he stepped up he has been in some very good exciting fights , but his level wether or not its European , British or World has been found out , thats not putting shit n him its stating facts early on his fights were cherry picked aimed at having the irish hero in america , he did manage to tap that market succesfully , later on he's just been found slightly underdone , nothing wrong with that , he could probably still have a few more big paydays and exciting fights left , just keep him away from punchers , but like i said they must have seen something in the gym early doors , because they simply under matched him building the record , not everyone can be the champ he's done OK maybee stayed ameteur too long i don't know , but its pro's and the one thing you do need is a better chin than the other guy

Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Jordan Gill | DAZN - 2 December 2023
he wasnt fast tracked but he wasnt matched all that soft. even tops ams usually get those types of fights early on. jason cunningham the year after going pro isnt too bad. hernandez and ruiz were decently tough guys who usually give rounds. ruiz would later draw with lee mcgregor and beat gamal yafai
to me the most glaring thing looking over his record is that he only had 1 fight in 2020. the baluta and doheny fights that came in 2021 could've come the year earlier instead of the single win oveer takoucht
