Pacquiao had 145 limit for Cotto
Canelo used 155 for his middleweight run and then jumped to 168

It is not unprecedented
it is NOT unprecedented but it is wrong & cowardly. when sugar ray robinson fought for the 175 pound title he weighted 157.5---joey maxim weighted 173---no rehydration clause---that's BALLS---many others would never have the courage to do this!
It was different times then. I don't think we will ever see that again.
I even doubt most commissions would sanction a 157 pound fighter fighting for the 175 pound championship. I may be wrong but I don't think I am
you see it now---USYK 223.5---FURY 262---38.5 pound spread---no rehydration clause---no whining & crying from USYK.
but you did NOT see BALLS like that from FMJ & CANELO !

Heavyweight is sort of a different Animal though in terms of weight. Anything over 200 you're a Heavyweight. So even though Usyk is a good bit smaller than Fury still, he's well into Heavyweight, and while he's small by today's standards, in many other eras he'd be average or even downright big with his current frame.

When George Foreman was one of the scariest Monsters the Heavyweight division had ever produced in the 70's, he weighed about what Usyk currently does.

When Tyson was the phenom of the 80's, he weighed less than Usyk currently does.

I don't really recall Canelo fooling around with weight too often in his career as far as trying to drain guys or what have you. The only one I can think of with Floyd is against Canelo.

CANELO refused to fight above 155 for 3 fights---cotto,khan & liam smith(all 3 for the world 160 pound title)---this was partly an excuse for not fighting GGG @ 160---because GGG refused to go to 155 in order to defend the 160 pound title.

Oh right. I forgot about that. In the case of Cotto and Khan it was probably all even as that's pretty much those guys' natural weight anyhow. Liam Smith might've been disadvantaged a little.

He fought GGG at 160 pounds and heavier though so it hardly matters now does it?

CANELO stayed @155 for those 3 fights because 160 was SO big that he couldn't fight there against a monster like 160 pound champ GGG. this was just a way to duck GGG until he was old. after this Canelo jumped to 168 & then 175. roberto duran marvin hagler & tommy hearns never asked for a weight limit lower than the division limit & never asked for a rehydration clause. those 3 guys had class & balls!

Canelo was already a mw draining himself to make 154 lbs. The idea was to wait a few years for GGG to get older. GGG was mandatory for Cotto, G stepped aside, then after Canelo took that title, he had another three fights before the fight with GGG. Canelo learnt a lot from FMJ's book. 26 y/o Canelo fought a 34 y/o GGG.

It wasn't their natural weights. Khan turned over at lightweight and Cotto was a super lightweight / natural welterweight. Khan especially had to eat himself up to Canelo-weight. It was actually pathetic: He literally got a middleweight belt on a plate when Cotto battered a crippled Marinez who came into the ring strapped up like Forest Gump as a kid, and was able to snatch it at catchweight while still claiming he was too teeny tiny to fight Golovkin, then fought the ex lightweight in Khan and then Liam Smith before, to add further insult, he jumped up 10 F*CKING POUNDS for another catchweight cash grab against fellow cheating Mexican weight bully Chavez Jnr, before finally finding the stones to fight an ageing GGG after Golovkin looked to have lost a step with a laboured performance against Danny Jacobs.

Even then, he lost and needed a bunch of corrupt judges who could only manage to rob him a draw.

Canelo was the worst P4P number 1 in all my time watching boxing. And we don't even know the full story when it comes to his shenanigans: rehydration clauses, PEDs, stacked wraps, who knows what else?I was so happy to see him get beaten by Bivol. Even now, he's making all the excuses in the world to avoid a legitimate threat.

I forgot how much I hated him.

Cotto was the defending Middleweight Champion against Canelo.

Canelo fought Golovkin 3 times. Bitching that a guy ducked somebody that he fought 3 times makes you sound retarded.

I've just emphasised the circumstances under which Cotto won that belt. And Canelo didn't fight him for that belt at 160. They fought for it at a catchweight. It shouldn't have been sanctioned at that weight, but money talks.

If you can't see that Canelo waited Golovkin out until he was old, I don't know what to say to you.

And if you want me to be even close to impressed with the 3rd fight... Jeez come on, man?

does anybody think GGG did NOT win the 1st fight---anybody? GGG was 40 for the 3rd fight when CANELO finally won for real. i scored the 2nd fight a draw. i scored BIVOL over CANELO 12 rounds to 0!---but i give CANELO an A for finding the BALLS to fight BIVOL.

I had Golovkin winning the first 2 fights with Canelo personally. The 3rd fight I'm glad that Golovkin got as a great final payoff for his career.

3G deserves at minimum a 1-1-1 record v Canelo. Team Canelo played a similar waiting game strategy with 3G before the first fight that Fury just did with Usyk.

Dunno about that. Fury wasn’t prime and wasn’t waiting on Usyk to get old, as Fury was probably ageing faster and has more miles on the clock generally. He just didn’t want to fight him but the Saudis made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Yup, thats right. For sure Canelo learnt a lot of shenanigans from the FMJ fight.

G was around 34-35 y/o when he fought a prime Canelo.

Yup, 155 was literally a pus..sy move but it is what it is. Canelo pretty much was waiting for G to get older and weaker but still could not beat G in their first match.

- Oh Dear, here we go again with a Boxrec timeline being your friend that you have sadly neglected.

Cotto was the Boss, held the titles, and dictated the catchweight of 155, a weight that Sugar Ray Robinson was often at in his middlewt career.

He fought Khan next at 155 because Canelo is the epitome of a Prizefighter and Khan brings the $$$. The backdrop was TBETUE ducked Khan who had won his Peoples Poll as TBE TUE was prone to do just to screw fans. Canelo rubbing it in then fought Liam Smith for his 154 IBF title to have something of value while seeking the TBE TUE rematch at the full 154 limit and not the 152 lb catchwt and 165 rehydration limit their first fight was at.

TBE TUE wouldn't bite, so Canelo fought a very lucrative nontitle grudge fight against JCCJr at 164 lbs that had been brewing the whole of their careers. That being done, now it's GGG time that was a classic in strategies and actions that the average fan don't understand because of the way boxing deliberately hides the scoring until the end. They were both my favorite boxers, so without bias, GGG carried rounds on his relentless aggression and Canelo with his keeping GGG on the move to never let him set to punch while walking him into blistering counters. I had Canelo by a point and rewarded with a perfect split decision. Typical know nothing fans blame Canelo for Missy Byrds outrageous 118-110 card is more to the point of illogical fallacies of the average boxrec fan..

For the rematch, GGG slit his own throat by insisting Canelo be suspended for ghost nanograms of Clen consistent with local food contamination found in every corner of the earth. Canelo never tested at the FAIL level or above, but instead well below in infinitesimal nanograms, a scale beyond comprehension. A fired up Canelo set up at ring center to knock GGG back anytime he tried to come in for 9 straight rounds before settling in to keep him on the move again while walking him into meaty counters. This being Vegas and Canelo bigger than Vegas by now, the best he could do was winning a Majority Decision which was the score he lost to TBE TUE that set the usual suspects to howling on this site then, now, and forever more. They can never understand that boxing does it's business as the most nontransparent sport of note in the world and they got the perfect fans for the farce.

GGG is long gone and soon Canelo will be, but the usual suspects will still be here having their frothing strokes in between their bowels erupting an uproar...yup :TU:

I've just emphasised the circumstances under which Cotto won that belt. And Canelo didn't fight him for that belt at 160. They fought for it at a catchweight. It shouldn't have been sanctioned at that weight, but money talks.

If you can't see that Canelo waited Golovkin out until he was old, I don't know what to say to you.

And if you want me to be even close to impressed with the 3rd fight... Jeez come on, man?

- That's OK. Better to be illiterate than Stuuupid :TU:

Right around this same time Golovkin is also angling for TBE TUE riches, offering his middle belts at a 155 Catchweight if Floydy wants to go for a 6th division title, obviously ducking Canelo, right? Also offered to go to 154 for all of Floydy's 154 titles, still ducking Canelo, right?

Same timeline Andre Wart, the human lowblow, headbutting, hitting on the break, rabbit punching, elbowing slashing marvel also offered TBE TUE a 162 Catchweight for his 168 titles. Nyet to that say Floydy who was on his way to a ducking Manny meltdown, beating up he Baby Mama, and serving a 6 month Big House sentence in isolation to protect he Candy from rapacious inmates looking for easy stuff...the way it was...'twas, and always shall be in history :TU:

I remember that big shot that stunned Mayweather to his boots.

Mayweather's most underrated qualities are his toughness and his balls.

Because of his fighting style, it wasn't apparent too often, but when he needed to show it, he proved he had them, namely this fight and also the De La Hoya fight too.

Fury “just didn’t want to fight” Usyk (The World’s Champion Boxer) the same as Canelo “did not want to fight” 3G.

They both took multiple walkover/circus fights waiting out Usyk and 3G as long as they could get away with it.

Similar strategies.
