Jake Paul has 26.5 million followers on Instagram.
And they all want to watch their guy fight a 58 year old man who hasn’t had a fight in 20 years?

Maybe they did a poll of the followers and this Mike Tyson guy was their first choice…
Yep. They'd watch him wrap a parcel, but they'll be up for this. They know who Tyson is, for a start. If Paul fought Usyk they would still watch it, but it wouldnt be as exciting to them to watch Paul fight that Ukrainian guy nobody ever heard of as it would to see him fighting the great Mike Tyson. Everyone knows Mike Tyson! He's a boxer.

Bear in mind that you are talking about people who stood in lines for hours, drove miles and paid ten times the retail value to get hold of bottles of coloured sugar water when Jake Paul told them to. Although actually that was his brother, but same thing.
I’m in absolutely no doubt that the event will be a financial success and that a lot of Jake followers will be excited to watch it, I just can’t help but question how many of them actually wanted this particular “fight” in the first place, over anything else that could have been put together. To someone in their teens / 20’s, Tyson must appear positively ancient.

Anyway it is what it is. Tommy Fury is probably sitting somewhere wondering if he could somehow get Lennox to come back for one night only.

doesn't look good for the fight though does it, I hope at best it's a staged move around. No one should fight at that age. He was shot in 2005.

Physically contemporaries Razor Ruddock and Oliver McCall looked awful at the ages of 51 and 54, in their last ring appearances. Lewis increasingly looks like a wizened old man. At 58 years old Tyson is going to be to pretty bad!!

Which gloves are they wearing? If it's 14 or 16oz it's literally throwing pillows at each other and it's like a spar.

Thanks for that.

I'm 51 and with a few weeks training I could go a few 2 minute rounds with 14 or 16 gloves with anyone of a similar age. Go to 12 or below I wouldn't last 20 seconds.

I'm 55, I would love to lace up 14 or 16 ounce gloves, with head guards of course and maybe raise a pound or two for a good cause, wink wink

Do the gloves make a massive difference considering there are plenty of videos showing fighters getting knocked out or dropped in various sparring or exhibition bouts?

I think the gloves weight makes a massive difference.

As I say with 14oz and 16oz it's effectively a pillow fight. As I've mentioned before, I've boxed at the lowest possible schoolboy and university levels with those gloves, no one ever got hurt.

I once thought I'd try sparring with 12oz. Latest about 30 seconds.

Hmmmmm you say you boxed for Cambridge right? Well Cambridge and other university clubs are licensed ABA clubs - they do not box using 16oz gloves, they box with ABA standard gloves. You are lying.

I didn't say I boxed FOR Cambridge I boxed AT Cambridge. Was nowhere near getting my Blue but used to go for sparring and general fitness.

I'd rather you didn't call me a liar.

You said you boxed at university and schoolboy level, and you boxed wearing 16oz gloves. You’re clearly being disingenuous. What you mean is you sparred a few times and never had a contest

That's not true either - schoolboy boxing and intra-Cambridge fights weren't just sparring, there was a bell and a referee. I've stated that the first time I ever tried with the lighter gloves I was on floor within seconds so I'm hardly boasting.

Look - you've been hostile to me on another thread so you clearly don't like me. I've been on this forum for over 20 years and never had a problem with anyone before. Let's just block each other as life is far too short for acrimony.

I don't lie - perhaps as someone who has been a top level solicitor for over 25 years (if you don't believe that I can send you a copy of my Practicing Certificate) my phrasing can seem nuanced but I'm never false.

All the best

You’re 100% lying. Cambridge university is an ABA licensed club and they would have bouts with non regulation 16oz gloves.

MT - of course I agree with you if it's against a fit elite athlete where you can get caught multiple times in a few seconds.

My point was simply that a couple of middle aged men in their 50s having a slow paced scrap in 14s or 16s are unlikely to hurt each other.

Anyway - after 20 years on this forum and having being called a liar multiple times, it's probably a good time to move on.
