American HW hype train just got derailed

Michael Hunter is now the highest rated US HW on Boxrec at 36 years old he has an opportunity to become their next hype train but he won't take it.

Hunter really never struck me as the type to rise above a contender. Losing to Uysk is nothing, but the split draw against Forrest sort of showed where he is at. I thought he did OK against (admittedly an old) Povetkin, but that was close too.

And his age caught up fast. 36 is tail end.
I still think Richard Torrez has a chance with some more development. He is still only 25, and exciting to watch.

Hunter has been messing around with weird rule rights like tri combat and Triller or whatever it's called. Pretty sure he's had a few fights cancelled against Hughie. He ducked the Hrgovic fight, backed out of a Parker fight. He thinks he's worth more than he actually is.

He is a decent enough name to boxing fans for someone trying to establish themselves among the top 10/15 but he is a potential banana skin. If anyone is highly skilled and confident they should be able to beat him though. Ruiz, Miller, Ajagba, Hrgovic or Sanchez should target him but he would probably price them out.

Bakole scored an eye catching stoppage, it would interesting to see him polished up in the defence department and a bit more in shape, but he looked capable.
He has quick hands and a variety of punches available to him, he can hit and looked fairly accurate most of the time.

I just remembered that Bakole is signed with Boxxer. Shalom has no relevant Heavyweights under contract and I also can't see them paying huge money for Bakole to get a star opponent. Who can they even bring in for him to get a top 10/15 opponent that isn't going to be signed by a rival? because we all know Shalom doesn't like his guys fighting under other banners.

Speaking with Big Fight Weekend, Anderson’s legendary promoter, Bob Arum, detailed that he and his team had nothing to do with the matchmaking for the contest and that they were actually ‘against that fight’.

“I want everybody to know that it wasn’t us. His Excellency Turki Alalshikh went right to the fighter and made this proposal for money that the fighter had never seen before and picked as his opponent, Bakole who is a tremendous puncher and Jared prepared to deal with a guy who couldn’t move very much but was a great puncher and he never fought a guy like that. So the fact he got taken apart and got knocked out was not surprising.”

“So don’t put it on my matchmakers. We were against that fight. Again, when they wave money at these kids, they insist on taking it. We could have gone to court to prevent it, but we don’t do those kind of things. We let the fight go ahead. We made our money from the fight but we let that fight go ahead and it was the stupidest fight Jared could have taken.”
