Collazo was a bit welterweight though, and Hatton was stepping up to the weight without even having a tuneup, and had a pretty turbulent training camp. Hatton has struggled with cute operators like that before as well.

Collazo was strong enough and technically good enough to stand and fight and back Hatton up, which I don't see Witter doing.

And the award for the dullest world title fight of 2006 goes to..........

But hey atleast he did what was needed and Corley could barely land a clean shot on him.

Funny seeing Eubank smiling on at Witters antics.

Hatton beats Witter.

Still, WBC champ, time to make some money if you can get a decent challenger.
Corley:

"I was robbed. Witter needs to keep fighting in the Ukraine...UK to get a decision"
Not sure what was worse Corley post fight claiming he won and did his job, or Dave Clark saying that he was dignified in defeat - hold on he didn't accept the decision, thought Witter would never win in the states - yep dignified.

Nice to see after two hours of Boxing, Clark still had to read the script to remember the weight Witter was fighting in.
I thought Clark was being sarcastic, I'm sure he was. Clarke was pretty piss poor wasn't he though?

Corley's full of shit, he was 'pressuring' Witter and 'throwing the punches' was he? My shitting arse he was, he did fakk all, fakk off and get your bleedin pharoa outfit and your women's knickers on you big poof!

Witter's kinda slick like Callazo too but is more of a puncher than Callazo.

Not saying Witter would win still though, but Witter can do southpaw. Hatton won but looked technically limited and showed he can;t walk through them all.

Witter it technically not very good. He has no proper defence, and cannot fight effectively in sustained bursts. He has to throw, land and then get out of range, or lunge then hold.

Collazo is a tricky southpaw with a good guard and good stand up boxing skills.

You cannot discount the effect of fighting bigger men, especially when you rely on physically overpowering your opponent. I heard someone say Collazo walks around at 170. Or am I confusing him with someone.

Ricky Hatton stopped the unidisputed champion.... Witter beat a fringe contender - yes, convincingly on my card. But please, do not compare the two opponents or the two performances.

I didn't discount it.

Hatton came in 2 pounds heavier on the second weigh in on the Callazo fight though as well.

We all know Hatton walks around with around 170 or a little higher as well.

Congratulate Junior for winning a world title, all you out there slagging him off stop it! He ddeserved to win tonight. Hatton is good but not a great fighter, if his last fight went another round he would have been stopped. Hatton lifestyle out of boxing will see his career last no more than 4 more fights.I cant wait for an all British title unification fight between the pair it be as big as Benn V Eubank 2.

Witter does have a good defense. He's very hard to nail. Like I say, against someone who opens up more, he's more likely to land those very surprising counter shots. With opponents coming at him the punches will be twice as powerful. The question is can he last the pace against a physical fighter?

This fight was frustrating to watch. But Corley took so few chances as he knew what would happen.

Hatton might be going head first into 2 or 3 big fights, but we won't see much more of him. I get the feeling Witter's going to be around for a while. He cling onto that belt for dear life and won't allow himself to get out of shape like some. It's good that undervalued fighters whose face doesn't fit can get there in the end.

Witter's body of work is starting to look decent. Kotelnik, N'dou and Corley are all good fighters.

Yeah, Clark has been on Snooker, Darts and now Boxing. I'm fed up with people slagging off Duke McKenzie and John Rawling who are perfectly good when weve got that Clown Calrk presenting Boxing.

he is fornicating useless.

When he was doing the Snooker he interviewed Jimmy White and was so lacking in knowledge that Jimmy said, "stop asking stupid questions, have you ever watched snooker before?"

I give Junior a chance against Ricky , if he lands a big shot will Ricky take it. I drink every weekend but I dont pretend to be a professional sportsman like Ricky, that lifestyle of his means he not got much left imo.

Indeed, Witter deserved his title shot, and he looks like he is still in shape.

Witter isn't that hard to hit though. N'dou it him PLENTY of times, as did Kotelnik. Witter uses his reflexes to avoid shots, the problem is, if he doesn't see the shot coming, he doesn't have a guard in place to block.

For me a good defence, is having your guard up, your chin tucked in and being able to ride shots.

Being elusive and having a good defence are two different things.

Witter is definetly elusive, but I wouldn't say he has a good defence, he has virtually no guard at all.

end of the day Junior is a WBC champion credit to him, he never had a fight for wbu bollox. Hatton held that embarrassing title for too long, he should have been a proper champ before.

I have to begin by saying WELL DONE WITTER. He did what he had to to win the title, and at this point in his career THAT is all that matters. :)

Corley, to me seemed poor, but styles make fights and Witter exploited his lack of ambition in a dull affair.

But there again Eubank wasn't exactly the epitome of excitement either.

Sure he done well..but he sure ain`t sold himself to the public.

Who would want to watch more of that?

Looks like the WBC belt gets ignored till the WBC find some reason to strip Witter.

Personally, I think that hatton would eat Witter up. Witter has decent unorthodox boxing skills and a fairly decent dig, but he is not a one punch KO specialist and he doesn't put enough punches together to finish guys off. He is essentially a safety first fighter with good boxing ability who has learned to create enough distance and space to do his best work. But a really strong fighter with decent power who puts the pressure on at close quarters will take him completely out of his comfort zone. And let's face it Witter does not appear to have the stamina to stand up to a fight like that.

I think alot of you are doing Witter a dis-service. He boxed the guy in front of him and beat him handily. Corley is a southpaw counter puncher - against Witters style it was never going to be pretty.

Well done to those who pointed out that Witter isnt as good a fighter as PBF - who is??

Witter claimed the WBC title tonight, an excellent result which ever way you look at it against a tricky, proven foe. Corley tasted the weight of Wtter's shot fairly early and woundnt commit himself to leading off there after.

A great result for Witter/Wincobank/Britain - well done Hitter!

I thought his reflexes looked sharp, his fitness good enough and I for one look forward to his first defence!

Congratulations Junior Witter, its been a very long time coming.

Witter deserves to bask in this moment for a good while. :TU:

With an eye on the future, a Hatton-Witter clash is now a truly mouth-watering domestic clash that will also be highly significant on the world level.

So Pernell Whitaker had no defense either? Because he did the same at time

James the Junior of last night is superior to theWitter of Ndou or Kotelnik. He got hit in those 2 fights after he ran out of steam (because of lounging in and switching every 5seconds). Against Corley he didnt get tagged clean once.

Remember against pressure fighters Witter will get tons of countering opportunities. Against a Ricky Hatton that rushes in, that could spell a KO or it could mean he taes all the early rounds.

I thought Witter was past it and couldnt fight for more than 5rounds, I was wrong. Now I say he counters Hattons head off and stops him (before I get jumped on I'm not saying Hattons worse than Corley it'll just give Junior more countering opportunities)

Jeez, I don't post very often but read the forum nearly every day, but had to contribute to this.

I can't believe that people are having a go at Witter because of the way he won a WBC World title! It used to be a matter of any fighter who did that would be praised to the high heavens, no matter what, has the spread of various world titles had that big an effect?

I really think you're doing Witter a disservice James, and comparing how he beat Corley to the way Mayweather did is complete madness. Mayweather is the P4P number one, and Witter is, and never will be, nowhere near that. Not many fighters will be. To compare the two is laughable.

Sure, Witter wasn't pretty, but he was damn effective. The bottom line is he won a major world title, outboxed a good American fighter who had only lost to top fighters, won by a wide points margin and had Corley in trouble at times during the fight, it's not as if he danced and ran all night.

I just wish some people would put their dislike of Witter aside for one moment to celebrate a British world title win. For too long we've had people having a go at fighters for settling for WBU and WBO rubbish. Well, we've got a fighter last night who wanted a major title and went out and got one, yet people are still having a go at him. Seeing Witter during his interview clutching the belt and constantly looking at it was a great sight. I've never been a massive Witter fan myself but can appreciate the fight he fought last night, but it's clear that there's some people in this thread who will just refuse to give him any credit at all. He's British, he's a major world title holder, I say well done Junior.

Why are you rating the WBC above other bodies, they are just a label, for TV companies, the product of corrupt organisations.

The WBC title is shit, just like the rest.

Witter, who has been unimpressive in his last two fights fought for the VACANT WBC title against a guy who lost his last three major fights.

The fact that the WBC had them rated 1 & 2 shows how bent and worthless the WBC are.

Ive been saying for years that a panel of (knowledgeable) writers from Newspapers etc should form a panel and meet monthly.

They should decide the ratings one panel, an independent one at that.

Listen, just because people have negative comments about the manner of the win, doesn't mean they have a personal dislike of Witter. If you took the time to read my piece over at Britishboxing.net, you will see that not only did I predict he would win this fight, but I think he deserves every success he gets after waiting so long for his title shot.

However, this fight serves to illustrate well partly why a fight with Hatton never came, and probably never will now and precisely why he waited so long to get his title shot. He got a title shot after his performance against N'dou which was an exciting performance where he put his man under pressure and hurt him.

Good luck to Junior, and I hope to see a lot more, but I hope it's a lot better to watch that this.
