mason was a well built unit but mostly a can crusher, amazing how many meaningless fights he had. finally faces a good fresh opponent and it's lennox lewis, a future atg heavy. they got the levels all wrong, way too much of a gap there.

I can still remember seeing the official fight posters around town for Frank Bruno v Trevor Berbick.

The word at the time was that Berbick had no intention of going through with the fight....low & behold the fight fell through !

The thing about Big Frank was that you would often get him fighting somebody "who had gone the distance with Mike Dokes or Mike Weaver in his last fight", which sounds impressive, then Bruno would knock him out inside two minutes. Most of his opponents were poor who had long periods of inactivity. His management did him no favours really in a purist sense. Why did he never fight Berbick for the Commonwealth trinket ? Lawless would consider him too dangerous. The cartel were just ripping off the public. In hindsught.

A lot of these champions were only exposed when Mike T came along. Maybe it was Berbicks handlers who didn't want Bruno? Berbick held the title for what. 8 months but who's to say Don King held the deck to who fought who in that era. Maybe Lawless and promotors didn't want anything to do with King. Of course when Bruno beat McCall he had to face Tyson next. If he refused that stipulation he may well never have fought for the title. King had a lot of influence and held all the aces. Ask Tim Witherspoon that. Incidentally Tim Witherspoon as a daughter in west Yorkshire I believe. Maybe Barnsley area

I think it's money related. I think Dennis Hobson helped him out as well and was let down.

Bruno had his style and approach to boxing. It's hard to say whether he would have won a world title via a different route. I don't really count the 4th attempt bauble, that was a cringey spectacle all round.

But both Bruno and Bugner were within a hairs breath of getting a shot at Holmes if they'd beaten Bonecrusher and Frazier jnr respectively.

I doubt either could have won but certainly Bruno might have been another of those young bucks who gave Holmes a real fright, Bonecrusher, Bey, Williams etc.


As for AJ, it's too soon for fans to listen or understand but really he's one of the most overhyped bauble holders of recent years.

I watched the first parts but im less interested in the eubank v benn second fight draw. It wasn't a great fight. Eubank was a different fighter by this point.

Mike was leagues ahead of most. Mike of late teens/early 20s would clean up today and we'd be saying he exposed the era.

I binge watched the whole 4 parts and it is a good watch, I still think a draw was convenient in Benn v Eubank II where both kept their titles.
Very sad seeing their struggles though in latter days

Frank's right hand was a lottery ticket in any fight. He had a powerful jab too.

I was a big fan. I met him once back in the 1980s. He signed my copies of The Ring at Merry Hill shopping centre! Took time to chat with me too.

But for me he starts as underdog against Fury, Joshua, Joyce, Dubois, Whyte and Chisora. Not saying he doesn't have what it takes to win some of those but I would not be backing him.
