Brits, how come a seasoned top fighter like AJ fought so amateurish against DD?
Re: Brits, how come a seasoned top fighter like AJ fought so amateurish against DD?
Two big punchers at HW went in. It's fairly normal for them to be both cautious early on.
AJ knew that Dubois's defeats were against guys who took him late. So likely he decided to hold back early on, be cautious.
Dubois decided to roll the dice. He landed big and early, and Joshua never recovered.

Bruno was ahead on the cards against Witherspoon, Bonecrusher and Lewis. I was impressed in the Lewis fight in particular as he was taking Lewis to school with the jab and well ahead in the fight. A poor decision was made to follow Lewis into the corner after he had Lewis hurt (again) and he got caught with a counter hook. I think he had a good chance of getting Lewis out of there in that round as he had hurt Lewis a few times and hurt him again in that round. If he stood off and kept it at long range it's likely he could have but his stamina would have started going badly in about the 10th round. It's easy to be a revisionist after the fact. Also, very few won rounds against Tyson. Bruno had Tyson hurt in round 1 of their first fight. I doubt Joshua would have gotten out of round 1 against either version of Tyson that Bruno fought. Bruno lacked stamina and fell apart late in fights but his jab was far superior to Joshua and that would really be all he would need as the first right hand off the jab would probably do Joshua in. Joshua wouldn't be taking Bruno late into the fight. He would have a punchers chance for me but neither of them have a particularly great chin. I don't see any area really where Joshua holds an advantage over Bruno at all apart from being a bit bigger.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑30 Sep 2024, 14:15Right. The Bruno retrospective crew are here! Acting like Frank was the second coming of Sonny Liston…..Bruno was awful…
the great british underdog also ran but we wuz robbed
Yet half this forum act like he would’ve knocked out every heavyweight of the last 20 years. Astonishing.
Here is a video of Bruno’s best knockouts. And look how bad he is….. clumsy, holding, hitting the back of the head. Slow. Crude. Just a big lump. Just awful.
You don't need to think Bruno is the second coming of Sonny Liston to confidently pick him over Joshua.
Re: Brits, how come a seasoned top fighter like AJ fought so amateurish against DD?
Jamesy I love how you persist in trying to get people to watch videos of Bruno fights, like anyone’s opinion on big Frank has been formed from reading old newspaper articles.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑30 Sep 2024, 14:15

Your memory is fading and you haven’t checked the cards! It’s like you’re caught in this false web of Frak Bruo was a great fighter hallucination. You don't need to think Bruno is the second coming of Sonny Liston to confidently pick him over Joshua.
For example - he didn’t win a SINGLE round against Tyson…
Bruno was behind clearly on all 3 cards against Tim, against Lewis two cards had it even, one in favour of Bruno, against Smith Bruno was ahead though we don’t have the cards of boxrec…. Although getting spectacularly KO’d by Smith makes that irrelevant.
Joshua has beaten better opponents than Bruno also. Povetkin, Wlad, Joseph Parker are way better than any Of Frank’s wins, as are arguably Ruiz and Pulev.

It blows my mind that the number two knockout rated in the Bruno video is CHUCK GARDENER for God’s sake.
A fight that Frank W*rren commented on with the line, my gardener could’ve done better!
Franks best KO will always be gerry Coetzee BISH BASH BOOM. The Bruno of that night for the first few rounds would’ve given any heavyweight in history pure hell

That was his best win although Coetzee admitted he came for a holiday and hadn’t really trained for the fight. Also anyone, especially a heavyweight, can be caught cold.MightyWarrior wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 06:00 It blows my mind that the number two knockout rated in the Bruno video is CHUCK GARDENER for God’s sake.

Yes I do believe you and others’ opinions are tarred by nostalgia. I remember Henry Cooper was in the studio, he said that he looked younger than Gardner and could still beat him!JamesPhilips wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 07:04That was his best win although Coetzee admitted he came for a holiday and hadn’t really trained for the fight. The next day Bruno was slated. TBF Gardner was brought in at the last minute to save the show (can’t remember who he replaced?! Anyone know?) and was clearly out of shape. He could box quite well and did so at a high level, though usually losing by stoppage. His skills weren’t that bad. He just didn’t look the part lol, he had that 1970s early 1980s white heavyweight look of Chuck Wepner, Scott LeDoux etc. That fat balding bar brawler look
Watched the fight again. Chuck has a nice jab and decent footwork - shades of Ali perhaps?

I think the Coetzee win is a tad inconvenient for Bruno slaters, given the absolute war Riddick Bowe had just had with the guy before getting the better of him.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 07:04That was his best win although Coetzee admitted he came for a holiday and hadn’t really trained for the fight. Although to be fair what the bloody hell was Coetzee doing back in the ring after only 3 months. Someone really didn’t give a shit about that fella.

Bro you’re mistaking Pierre Coetzer with Gerrie Coetzee.Kilburn wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 12:29I think the Coetzee win is a tad inconvenient for Bruno slaters, given the absolute war Riddick Bowe had just had with the guy before getting the better of him.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 07:04That was his best win although Coetzee admitted he came for a holiday and hadn’t really trained for the fight. Coetzer was very tough but a small heavy. Bruno outweighed him by 24 lbs.
He also fought Bowe, Bruno, Foreman one after the other.
Crazy. Bowe outweighed him by 30 pounds and Foreman by 42 lbs…. And he fought them all within 6 months!!!Yes a brave manager
Best moustache in boxing though

I rewatched Brunos career a while back and in the fight vs Tim I had Bruno ahead slightly but the cards had him a couple down you're right. Mainly because his stamina started going and that was a constant issue with him. Povetkin, Wlad and Parker are better than Brunos wins you could say but you can pick holes in them as the first two were at the end of their careers and Parker was in the stage of his career where he was extremely safety first and never took a risk. Just look at his horrid fight with Hughie. His fight vs Ruiz was similar. I would imagine many heavyweights would just outbox Ruiz of the second fight and Pulev was too long in the tooth.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑02 Oct 2024, 05:45

Bruno also won the first 4 rounds of that Lewis fight extremely clearly. There is no way you can give Lewis any of those rounds and if you did I'd like to know which round it was. I've timestamped Harold Ledermans scorecard after 4 rounds and his comments. Keep in mind the rules of the fight were that if it was stopped after three rounds it was going to the cards, and the weather had been crap all week, so its' not like Lewis wasn't trying. You could give Lewis the 5th and 6th but I didn't. There is no way Joshua could have performed as well as this against Lewis.
