"Monster" Inoue teases potential next fight against Goodman

After retaining his undisputed super bantamweight championship with a sixth-round technical knockout of Luis Nery, Naoya Inoue indicated Monday his team will enter talks on a bout against Australian fighter Sam Goodman.

"As for my next move, I'd like to arrange a fight around September against this boxer Sam Goodman," the Japanese star said in a post-match interview, referring to the unbeaten 25-year-old, who was invited into the ring in front of a crowd of about 43,000 at Tokyo Dome.

Goodman is ranked No. 1 in the super bantamweight division by two of boxing's four major organizations.

"I've been mandatory for over a year. Either give up the belts or fight me. Let's get it on," Goodman said.

Inoue, nicknamed "Monster," extended his knockout streak to eight matches and improved to 27-0 with 24 knockouts.

We know Turki is offering Inoue a Wembley fight in Seprember..

May push the Goodman fight to December.

Who could he face at Wembley? Liam Davies? Leigh Wood? Nick Ball? Or just someone unrelated to the UK or Europe?

liam davies really the only brit approaching world level at 122. he's with warren who is close with the turk, so they could prob make it if they really wanted to, but would fwank want a beating for his young hot shot ? davies looks good enough to cherry pick a belt if inoue decides to move up next year

ive got my fingers crossed that they dont care about getting a uk or euro opponent and that saudi money can make inoue-mj or inoue-casimero

I just threw the options out that make it more financially tempting for Inoue. I still imagine an all-Japanese bout with Nakatani would be much more likely to be held in Japan. If it isn't Casimero, MJ or Davies then it would have to be a featherweight otherwise it would be very underwhelming.

I don’t care if he is a few weights up he should fight Estrada vs Jessie Rodriguez winner.

There’s about 5 good domestic matchups for him too but I don’t see them bringing big bucks outside of Japan.

It always pisses me of when I have to see his face.
I don't care what I was watching, if I see his face I'm closing the video.

I think we're all still looking past this fight like we were with the last one. Is anyone looking forward to it because of Goodman? Or just because it's Inoue?

For me it’s because it’s Inoue. I don’t think it’s right to look past anyone who works their arse off to become a mandatory challenger for a unified title.
But gees it’s so hard to see anything but a spectacular finish for Inoue.

Naoya Inoue finalizing title defense vs. Sam Goodman

Naoya Inoue and Sam Goodman are finalizing a deal for a Dec. 24 fight in Tokyo for Inoue's undisputed junior featherweight championship, sources told ESPN on Thursday.

The fight will be streamed on ESPN+ on Christmas Eve morning in the U.S.

Inoue, ESPN's No. 3 pound-for-pound boxer, will face an Australian for the second consecutive outing. The Japanese star, known as "The Monster," scored a seventh-round TKO against TJ Doheny last month.

Inoue (28-0, 25 KOs) was a -6500 favorite against Doheny, according to ESPN BET, and while he'll be heavily favored to defeat Goodman as well, the odds aren't likely to be as lopsided. Goodman (19-0, 8 KOs) is ESPN's No. 4 junior featherweight and has proved his mettle in wins over fellow contenders Ra'eese Aleem and Doheny.

Goodman, 25, is coming off a July decision win over Thai fringe contender Thachtana Luangphon.

Inoue's second defense of his undisputed championship will be his third fight of the year and will fulfill another mandatory obligation. The 31-year-old will still owe one more mandatory defense afterward against Uzbekistan's Murodjon Akhmadaliev.

Inoue, a future Hall of Famer, hasn't competed in the U.S. since June 2021, but there are plans for him to return for a stateside fight next year.

ob Arum Reveals Latest on Naoya Inoue vs. Sam Goodman for Dec. 24

As we move towards the end of the year, it has certainly been a memorable 12 months for boxing with great fights including Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury for the undisputed heavyweight title and Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed light heavyweight crown. One of the most talked about boxers in recent times is the undisputed super bantamweight king, Naoya Inoue, and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum recently sat down with Dan Rafael for a special Fight Freaks Unite/Big Fight Weekend podcast where he revealed the latest on what’s next for the “Monster.”

With the recent news that the IBF have scheduled purse bids for October 29 for Inoue vs. Goodman, Rafael asked Arum for the latest on this potential fight: “Someone at the IBF jumped the gun and sent out that letter. The negotiations between the Inoue camp and the Goodman camp have been going swimmingly, and we are just about ready to conclude those negotiations – and I’m very optimistic that fight will be held on December 24 on Christmas Eve in Japan, in Tokyo,” said Arum.

He revealed: “If Inoue is successful, we really hope to bring him to the United States for a major fight in Las Vegas. I know Todd DuBoef the president of Top Rank has had big discussions with Bill Hornbuckle, the chairman of the MGM as far as holding that fight out in April.”
