Gervonta Davis says recent birth of son has him ready to retire after 2025

Gervonta “Tank” Davis may have been four hours and 28 minutes late for his originally scheduled press conference on Tuesday. But if he follows through on his surprising announcement to retire at the end of 2025, Davis may have only a handful of press conferences left to worry about in the future.

Davis, one of the biggest stars in the sport, stunned onlookers when he announced at the kickoff presser on Tuesday for his upcoming WBA lightweight championship with Lamont Roach that he doesn’t plan on fighting past next year.

Davis, 30-0 (28 KOs), expanded on that intention to a group of news media members following the press conference, saying the recent birth of his son has caused him to reconsider the future of his boxing career.

“It’s over with after this year,” Davis said of his career while slumped in a chair on stage. “This is trash, garbage. I’m out. I’m fed up with it. I don’t care about belts. I don’t care about none of that. I’m worried about getting my money and getting out of there. I’m just fed up. It’s not even boxing. It’s everything. I have kids, too. I just had a boy. I don’t want to have to keep fighting and getting punched and all that.”

Tank said he plans to fight three times in 2025 and then will call it a career. He mentioned a rematch with Ryan Garcia, who he stopped in April of 2023, as another fight he wants to check off his list before he sails into the sunset. Their highly lucrative showdown garnered more than 1.2 million pay-per-views and produced $22.8 million in ticket sales last year.

Davis also said he may pursue a fight with former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney as his third and final fight of 2025.

Davis said he plans to build his real estate portfolio in retirement and “separate myself from the limelight.” Later, he added, “I just want to be able to make money and stay out of the way.”

Davis is scheduled to face Roach on March 1 in a PBC on Prime Video pay-per-view at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

He better be a real good boxer.
He's going up against Tank so he's not. Tank doesn't fight real good boxers. Or real good punchers. Or real good anything.
Not a Tank fan right now
He's ducking an not establishing himself as a boxer.
Should be careful he's not using his best years up, I happen to think he has unburied treasure in his defence that can bail him out in the long run.

Jose Valenzuela-Gary Antuanne Russell, Alberto Puello-Sandor Martin added to Davis-Roach card

The WBA lightweight championship fight between Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Lamont Roach Jnr will have three other title fights on the PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime card.

Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela, holder of the WBA junior welterweight title, is billed to take on Gary Antuanne Russell in the co-main event, while WBC junior welterweight champion Alberto Puello defends his title against mandatory challenger Sandor Martin.

The event will take place March 1 at Barclays Center in New York.

Valenzuela, 14-2 (9 KOs), is coming off an emphatic decision win over Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in August last year. Valenzuela, a 25-year-old Mexican fighter, came back stronger after a controversial decision loss to Chris Colbert in March 2023, blasting out Colbert in six rounds in a rematch nine months later.

“I’m here to show the world what it means to be great,” said Valenzuela. “Bring me your most ferocious, and I will bring back their heads. On March 1 I will achieve victory against Gary Antuanne Russell and cement my legacy in the super lightweight division. Don’t miss it, because I’m making sure everyone knows where I stand at 140 pounds.”

Valenzuela’s opponent, Russell, 17-1, (17 KOs), is hoping to be lucky on his second attempt at a world title after losing to Alberto Puello in their June 2024 clash for the WBC 140-pound title.

“I can’t wait to get back in the ring and display my skills,” said the 28-year-old Russell. “Not everyone can perform when the heat gets turned up in the kitchen, but like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson said, can you smell what we’re cooking? We’re gonna find out if Valenzuela is ready on March 1.”

Meanwhile, Dominican Republic’s Puello, 22-0, (10 KOs), will put his WBC junior welterweight belt on the line against 42-3, 15 KOs Spanish fighter Martin in a 12-round showdown. Now a two-time world champion (having previously held the WBA 140-pound title), Puello returned to titleholder status last June after recording a decision win over Russell for what was then the WBC’s interim title, before being elevated shortly after fight night.

Puello described Martin as a great fighter but vowed to stamp his place in the sport by defending his WBC belt.

“This is my time, my stage and I’m ready to put on a show that fans will never forget. When we step into that ring, it’s going to be fireworks. I’m going to bring the best version of myself and do whatever it takes to leave with the victory. I’m doing this for the Dominican Republic, this fight is for them and I’m going to make them proud.”

But Martin, 31, who has earned back-to-back knockout victories over Arblin Kaba and Mohamed El Marcouchi in July and December 2023, said he was ready to take up the opportunity of becoming a champion.

“A new super lightweight king will be crowned on March 1. Alberto Puello has some experience, but he won’t be prepared for what I bring to the ring in Brooklyn. That beautiful WBC belt is coming home with me to Spain.”

Also on the card, junior middleweight Yoenis Tellez will take on former unified champion Julian “J-Rock” Williams for the WBA Interim belt.

Two-fight PBC on Prime show on March 1 to spotlight Jarrett Hurd and Jonathan Lopez

In separate attractions featured on a two-fight PBC on Prime Video show taking place Saturday, March 1 and leading up to the PBC pay-per-view event headlined by Gervonta “Tank” Davis against Lamont Roach, Jarrett Hurd and Jonathan Lopez will feature.

Hurd, once a unified champion at junior welterweight, will take on Johan Gonzalez in a 10-round middleweight affair. Lopez, a young, undefeated super featherweight, faces U.K. contender Alex Dilmaghani for a 10-round fight.

Undercard matchups will see WBA 140lbs champion José “Rayo” Valenzuela take on Gary Antuanne Russell in the co-main event, WBC 140lbs champion Alberto Puello defending his title against mandatory challenger Sandor Martín, and rising star Yoenis Téllez facing former unified world champion Julian Williams.

“Jarrett Hurd is no stranger to delivering a Fight of the Year, and he will bring his toe-to-toe style into the ring against another power-puncher in Johan Gonzalez,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions.

The 34-year-old Hurd, 25-3-1 (17 KOs), took part in multiple notable fights at the height of his career in the late 2010s. He stopped Austin Trout in ten rounds in 2017. He unified the WBA and IBF 154-pound titles in 2018, dropping longtime champion Erislandy Lara in the final round to win a close decision in a fight that was the consensus 2018 Fight of the Year. He then lost the titles in a fiercely contested decision to Williams the year after. Hurd most recently fought former unified champion Jeison Rosario to a draw last August, and has lost three of his last six fights.

“I’ve been working hard as ever to end my career the right way, back on top where I belong,” said Hurd. “Everyone knows what I bring to the ring, so make sure you tune in March 1 or come out to Barclays Center, because I’m going in there to make a statement.”

Gonzalez, 34-4 (33 KOs), will look to bounce back after most recently losing to Yoenis Tellez. A pro since 2017, Gonzalez won his first 22 bouts before dropping a split decision in 2018.

“I’m very thankful to my team for this opportunity on March 1,” said Gonzalez. “I’m not focusing on my opponent, just on being the best Johan Gonzalez. I have to demonstrate my skills. Nothing else matters.”

Trained by the renowned Eddy Reynoso, the 21-year-old Jonathan “La Roca” Lopez will take on Alex Dilmaghani in a 10-round super featherweight clash.

Residing in Orlando, Florida, Lopez, 17-0 (12 KOs) has stopped 10 of his last 12 opponents. Lopez most recently dominated contender Richard Medina last September and won a unanimous decision punctuated by a final round knockdown. He then went 10 rounds for the first time as he bested former title challenger Eduardo Baez via a wide unanimous decision leading into his three-victory 2024 campaign.

“I’m super excited to be back in the ring,” said Lopez. “This is a perfect opportunity for me to showcase my talent and skills on a fight of this magnitude. I have to show everyone that my time is now.”

A native of Manchester, United Kingdom, Dilmaghani, 20-3-1 (7 KOs) is coming off a loss to Rene Tellez Giron in June 2024. The 33-year-old has competed professionally since 2009, and fought in Mexico, Canada, France and Denmark, in addition to his native U.K.

“I can’t wait to step into the ring on March 1 and show everyone the best version of myself,” said Dilmaghani. “If people are sleeping on me, they’re going to be surprised, because I’m training hard to make sure I steal the show when that bell rings. I’m definitely coming to make the most of this opportunity.”

Like the way Roach is carrying himself here. He looks very confident, and he’s obviously extremely good. Helps him that they’ve probably sparred thousands of rounds, I would guess.

He could give Tank a good fight here, but you figure the tank bombs are gonna land probably late on.

Hopefully not very much. Small black guys avoiding to fight each other, while talking idiotic trash, fighting mediocre oponents, with trash undercard full of flys, bantams and feathers, charged with PPVs.

He's definitely one of the most popular fighters on Social media, and all that. Has a lot of fans. Most of whom don't get it that he ducks the world. They only see knockouts.

I don't know how PBC makes any money putting a card like this-which is HBO Boxing After Dark calibre-as an $80 PPV. When I first heard they were doing fight cards on Prime, I was like "oh, smart way to expand to newer audiences" but then they price these C and B grade cards as A grade PPVs. Like make it even $40 and I'd consider it. GTFO with $80 for this.

Rayo/Russell is the only thing that's all that's interesting to me on here, might as well be the main as far as I'm concerned. Not super hyped about Davis eventually knocking out another guy who does well in spots early, and that is what we're going to see, yet again.

I guess Jarrett Hurd's going away party was somewhat interesting to me for nostalgic reasons of the long lost late 2010's,, but that wasn't even part of the paypig card anyway.
