5 best british pound for pound since 1976

Post by harrygreb »

woke up thinking who would be in my best 5 brits of all weights of the last 30 years. its very tough. would minter be in it? would stracey? would andries make it? how about hoko? maybe lennox? too late for chris finnegan, too late for johnny clarke and buchanan was past his best by then. perhaps McKenzie scrapes in? one stipulation - theyre not fighting now, so no hatton or calzaghe.

heres mine in no order;

john conteh
herol graham
minter
McGuigan
lennox lewis

cant help thinking i have forgotten someone though

Lennox Lewis
Herol Graham
Jim Watt
Barry McGuigan
Lloyd Honeyghan

And unfashionable though it is; Prince Naseem is interchangeable with all of them. If you take the meaning of pound for pound, Hamed punched like a lightweight, was fast, unorthodox and had great recovery powers and a good chin.

He was a formidable fighter for all the debates about his opponents, unfulfilled potential etc.

So why put Herol Graham in there, what exactly did Graham achieve at top level?

Lewis has to rank top, no other Brit has been undisputed champion in that time.

So was Hamed, he beat all the belt holders and beat the linear champ.

Also in a great division, beating every man he ever faced, and dominating for 11years.

I thought Harry said no Hatton or Calzaghe, though in fairness Lennox would still have to be top. Lloyd Honeyghan has to be in there as does N. Benn, but Michael Watson only ever lost to top quality men, or naturally bigger men. so he must be worthy.

He beat the man, Vito. He also had a line stemming from the fight between Valdes and Briscoe for the title vacated by Monzon.
Minter was undisputed champ. Think you can pin point the creation of the IBF as 9-11-84, when they grabbed hold of the coat tails of Larry Holmes, when he was stripped of his title for fighting Bonecrusher Smith.

I'd have Calzaghe in top 5, in terms of talent alone.

He sure as hell didn't look bigger than Eubank.

I don't really recall, it was more noticable how mountainous his shoulders and back were and how barrell chested he was.

Watson was more slim built with a pretty even weight distribution.

Careful now Terrence, you're straying into the waters of a "semi" here, beautifully put together is really pushing the envelope me old china. A magnificent specimen is more manly, oh no hang on, that sounds pretty whoopsified too doesn't it.

Steve Collins was fekking huge, I remember being flabberghasted at how much bigger than Eubank he was, I cannot for the life of me see how he made 168 let alone 160, he must have had bones like a hummingbird.

In no order

Minter
Honeyghun
Eubank
Lewis
Naz

Honourable mention
McGuigan, Calzaghe.

I have Naz in over McGuigan based on achievement - however, prime for prime I would have tipped Barry.

Edit: I have edited my list, on further relfection. I have decided that Joe and Eubank's achievements are very similar so it goes down to who I think wins prime for prime..... Thats Eubank for me.

I did originally have Calzaghe and Eubank swapped - its that close though, Benn and Collins also up there.

I think Lewis, and then Calzaghe have achieved way more than the rest. & much more ability than most on these lists. Biggest talent was Conteh, but he didn't have their dedication.

nice spin...but fact is the only 2 non-wbo champs he beat were a faded 33-year-old ibf champ tom johnson & wbc champ cesar soto, who was making 1st defense of crown he won by controversial decision over aging luisito espinoza!! in fact, that was soto's last significant win...logging only 2 wins over C-level fighters in 13 fights since then!!

but perhaps most significantly, hamed conspicuously avoided #1 wbo mandatory challenger juan manuel marquez for over 18 months...and with good reason---marquez would have exposed naz even before barrera did, since the versatile mexican was a natural featherweight as opposed to MAB, who was coming up directly from super bantam for the naz fight!! :TU:
