He may have only come out with Silver, but he definitely became a household name straight away.

The "very mouthy American" was fairly universally regarded as shit, though. He won a world title because Glazkov threw his knee out and was then essentially hawking it to the highest bidder as absolutely everyone of any worth knew they would beat him. Joshua got him on home soil because he was already a massive media star in the UK and therefore had the money behind him to pay Martin. The win itself didn't change much about the way anyone perceived him.KiwiRider wrote: ↑18 Mar 2025, 23:35 It hasn't particularly aged well, but Anthony Joshua winning a world heavyweight belt on British soil, and against a very mouthy American.
I think everyone in the country was made aware of that win, it was quite a spectacle, and with a highlight reel for the news.
Positive stories about boxing don't make the news much these days.

Did anyone expect any other result though? I don't think there was anyone who wasn't already convinced by Hamed at that point who thought "Well, now he's beaten Steve Robinson the world's at his feet".polecateddy wrote: ↑21 Dec 2022, 09:33 Naz v Steve Robinson was a big one!
Re: Brits Who Announced Their Arrival With a Statement Win.
I think that fight convinced the remaining cynics. There were a couple of lads in my gym at the time who picked Robinson and they were far from 'casuals'. All the younger lads backed Naz and there were already Asian lads appearing in the gym because of him. It was a few of the blokes in their 30s who weren't sold based on him being a flash so and so with bad balance, in their opinion.gp. wrote: ↑19 Mar 2025, 07:36Did anyone expect any other result though? I think Naz announced himself on the world stage when he fought Kevin Kelley.Jimmy2025 wrote: ↑19 Mar 2025, 12:13I think that fight convinced the remaining cynics. Yes, that's probably fair comment. It was definitely after the Robinson fight that the people I associated with were convinced and invested but I just worked and trained back then so only really knocked about with boxing people. Pre-internet for all of us peasants. Boxing News was the bible.keithmoonhangover wrote: ↑19 Mar 2025, 12:30I think Naz announced himself on the world stage when he fought Kevin Kelley.Jimmy2025 wrote: ↑19 Mar 2025, 12:13I think that fight convinced the remaining cynics. What was Bruno’s statement win? Coetzee? I mean he’d been a big name in UK for ages…. TBH he didn’t really have many decent wins…. Anders Eklund? The Chuck Gardner fight got a lot of press, but not for good reasons

Not sure he ever had one. Frank was all about hope and Britain's obsession with lovable losers.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑19 Mar 2025, 13:34 What was Bruno’s statement win? Coetzee? Yup. He feasted on has beens and never weres. Known for his losses. Barely beat a crack addicted Oliver McCall…. Who’s very tough and could punch but hardly an ATG. Thats his best win.Jimmy2025 wrote: ↑19 Mar 2025, 13:39Not sure he ever had one. Definitely. His best loss was probably against Lennox, he did better than I thought he would.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑19 Mar 2025, 13:43Yup. He feasted on has beens and never weres. Known for his losses. Re: Brits Who Announced Their Arrival With a Statement Win.
This exactly. He ddin't have one and didn't need one. As long as he kept on beating people ranked below him, he had enough media backing (and therefore money behind him) behind him to get the bigger fights and lose. He offered a very good reward to risk ratio for any world champions.Jimmy2025 wrote: ↑19 Mar 2025, 13:39Not sure he ever had one. It was a big thing because of the time between British heavyweight champions. Of course it's becoming common nowgp. wrote: ↑19 Mar 2025, 07:32The "very mouthy American" was fairly universally regarded as shit, though. It was a big thing, but it wasn't Joshua's arrival. All his previous fights were being built up and widely reported as well. After the Olympic gold he was a household name in the UK, and beating Martin didn't change that and didn't change him being largely unknown everywhere else.KiwiRider wrote: ↑19 Mar 2025, 15:16It was a big thing because of the time between British heavyweight champions. Fury v Wilder 2 was a huge win.
