"I think Lowry would have gone the distance if we had fought a hundred times. I could never get used to his style of fighting." - Rocky Marciano (after his retirement)
Seeing as how you added a couple of quotes of Silverman's from Marciano's bio, Brock, I figured I'd add yet another quote from the book to the mix.
no problem. i disagree with marciano here. the 1949-50 marciano was nothing like the prime rocky marciano. marciano really improved from early 1950 to mid 1951. much more polished, much better use of left hook, much better defense, much more unpredictable.
a 51-52 marciano who now had a developed dangerous left hook would have a two fisted assualt that lowry wouldnt be able to stand up to. the 1949 marciano was all right hand crazy, way too predictable
i think marciano at his peak knocks out lowry
Marciano may have improved a small amount after the Lowry fights, but I personally don't see how you can say that "Marciano knocks him out" or "destroys" Lowry with such confidence, especially when the evidence suggests that that is much more likely not to happen...whether that be Lowry's style description (the defensive, skilled, cagey, very smart & experienced, spoiler type), the fact that they went the distance twice (and like someone else pointed out, the rematch was only a couple of months before 1951 began, and was in the time frame where you yourself said Marciano "really improved"), the fact that Marciano gave that quote about Lowry likely lasting with him every time, or going by Lowry's record of only being stopped a couple of times in such a lengthy career (great ratio for a .500 type fighter).
I'd say Marciano already had a "dangerous left hook" when he faced Lowry, at least in the rematch...I'm sure Carmine Vingo would agree with that, as well.
And Brockton, I'm just reading some earlier comments and you've emphasized a couple of times a point where you stated that Sam Silverman thought Marciano won the first fight...Where are you getting that opinion from?
I'm just asking, because if you're only going simply from the Marciano bio, it does not actually state that Silverman thought Marciano won the fight. That "body beating" might very well indicate that he thought Marciano won the fight, but...Well to tell you the truth, I've very often hear very, very similiar statements regarding the amount of punishment George Chuvalo did to Ali's body in their first fight, as I'm sure you have. But you and I both know that Ali won that fight via a very lopsided decision with Chuvalo only winning maybe two or three rounds...
"Chuvalo did such a number on Ali's body that it caused the champion to urinate blood after the fight."
That one abbreviated quote on its own might give someone the wrong idea of what happened in that Ali/Chuvalo fight, and may give you something to think about in regards to the first Marciano/Lowry one.
