Gervonta Davis vs. Jake Paul in jeopardy, will not go ahead in Georgia

The ‘exhibition’ between cruiserweight Jake Paul and lightweight Gervonta Davis, which had been proposed for November 14, will not be happening in Georgia.

According to USA Today, Paul’s promotional group MVP withdrew requests for event permits and rule waivers – one of which being the huge weight discrepancy between the boxers – required to stage such a contest.

Rick Thompson, chairman of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission, said: "I believe it's in the public's interest to know that because they've been promoting something they should not have been.''

Robert A. Sinners, Communications Director for the Office of Secretary of State, told USA Today that the event "will not be happening.''

Regardless, Boxing Scene has learned that the organisers are still hopeful that the event will occur elsewhere.

The bout, even after it was announced by MVP last month and even accounting for the ‘exhibition’ tag, always seemed like a long shot given that Davis has never weighed more than 140lbs and Paul was 227lbs as recently as last November.

"They probably evaluated a situation - knew that their weight differences were too much,'' said Thompson.

Last month Matchroom's Frank Smith, who had been negotiating a potential Anthony Joshua vs. Paul contest with MVP, told BS: "They’ve announced it, but the weight isn’t agreed, none of the details have been agreed, so it’s not really agreed. You can imagine there will be some stumbling blocks."

Paul’s career has been built on leftfield events comparable to this one, however. Not least his contest with 58-year-old Mike Tyson last year, which was won on points by Paul after eight two-minute rounds and drew a reported audience of more than 100 million on Netflix.

Most recently, in June, the 12-1 (7 KOs) Paul outpointed Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr over 10 rounds, weighing 199.5lbs. Three months before Davis, 30-0-1 (28 KOs) and weighing 133.75lbs, was held to a 12-round draw by underdog Lamont Roach.

The question that comes from this is: what were the rules that the commission were not happy with to even sign it off as an exhibition? Must be very unsporting...

GERVONTA DAVIS VS JAKE PAUL MOVED FROM ATLANTA TO MIAMI

Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis is on the move.

The Nov. 14 clash between the YouTuber-turned-boxer and the lightweight titleholder was originally scheduled to take place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta but, according to Paul's Most Valuable Promotions, it now will be staged at Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida.

The Georgia State Athletic Commission, which had yet to approve the event, reportedly was uncomfortable with the vast weight difference. Paul last fought at 199½ pounds, Davis at 133¾.

The fight will be streamed on Netflix.

“They probably evaluated a situation, knew that their weight differences were too much," GAEC commissioner Rick Thompson told USA Today. Earlier this month, Thompson described the matchup as "the dumbest (expletive) I’ve ever heard," according to the newspaper.

The fighters didn't let the change of venue prevent them from continuing to promote the event.

“Jake Paul has been cherry picking in the sport of boxing for a while now, but he picked the wrong opponent this time,” Davis said via press release. “He better start losing some weight, chasing some chickens, and pray that helps him some on fight night! Thank you to Netflix for giving me the opportunity to whoop this clown!”

“New city, same mission, seek and destroy the tank,” Paul added. “Kaseya Center. Friday, November 14. I'm bringing the heat, and Miami will see me take down this angry elf while the world watches live on Netflix."

Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs), 30, enters the bout against Paul after fighting to a majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Had referee Steve Willis ruled Tank taking a knee in the ninth round as a knockdown, Roach Jr. (25-1-2, 10 KOs), 30, would have won by unanimous decision and pulled off one of boxing’s biggest upsets this century.

A rematch for Davis’ WBA lightweight title was in the works for Aug. 16 in Las Vegas, but didn’t come to fruition as Davis instead opted to face Paul.

Paul (12-1, 7 KOs), 28, is coming off a one-sided unanimous decision victory over former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on June 28 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

The parameters of the Paul-Davis fight, including whether it’s an exhibition or a sanctioned bout and how the weight issue will be handled, remain largely unknown.

Jake Paul-Tank Davis presser: Sound and fury, signifying nothing

Hopefully Brian Custer was paid well for the indignity of hosting the inaugural press conference for the November 14 exhibition between Jake Paul and Gervonta "Tank" Davis, neither of whom was capable of making an already-dubious matchup seem remotely more interesting on Monday evening. Custer, employed by Showtime during its boxing run, was an estimable broadcaster and host, and had many thoughtful sit-downs with fighters on his podcast “The Last Stand.”

Now? Custer spent the better part of an hour Monday evening gassing up a fight between a cruiserweight and a lightweight, all part of a janky, button-pushing spectacle in which the cruiserweight paused to request a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk – a flashpoint figure who had nothing to do with boxing.

Say this: Jake Paul is apparently important enough for the chronically tardy Davis to show up for a media event on time. The fighters walked onto a dais in front of a small crowd at Times Square’s Palladium Theater a mere 10 minutes past 6 p.m. ET.

“I’m definitely excited, it’s gonna be good,” was among Davis’ opening remarks. He also forgot the date of the fight and later referred to Most Valuable Promotions, which is presenting the fight in partnership with Netflix, as “MP.” This prompted Paul to say, “He can’t read, just like Floyd [Mayweather].”

Paul’s MVP co-founder, Nakisa Bidarian, took the stage to announce that multiple world title fights would soon be announced for the undercard, including a “historically relevant” co-main. For those boxing observers who may be weary of hearing Turki Alalshikh feted ad nauseam, Bidarian also thanked Al Haymon.

The press conference’s overriding message was that substance is irrelevant if you have enough flash – though, in this case, flash was lacking, too. Custer referred to Paul’s win over a 58-year-old Mike Tyson last November – a sad affair that left many of the millions of watchers feeling sick – as “monumental.” A media member asked both fighters to present their case for being the face of boxing – a decent, open-ended question that should have provided each man plenty of opportunity to spew quote fodder.

“I’m not the face of boxing, fam,” responded Davis, who cut an awkward figure, giving brief answers to most questions and looking uninterested during the face-off.

“Numbers,” was Paul’s offering for why he is the face of boxing.

Even the moments of trash-talk proved boring or stomach-turning. Davis called Paul a “clown” early on. Paul retorted that “any man who puts his hands on a woman is a clown,” referring to Davis’ recent arrest for, and history of, domestic violence. Yet Paul himself has been accused of sexual assault (which subsequently went unaddressed). Davis attempted a stumbling, incoherent defense that included a mention of P. Diddy, and had to be bailed out by Custer, who moved on to allow media questions.

Those didn’t yield much fruit, either. The first question was sensible and sharp, directed at Davis, and concerned the boxing world’s desire to see him in with Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez Jnr, as well as its negative reaction to his matchmaking.

“Why should I care?” Davis asked.

There followed a series of content creators asking generic questions. One of them spent about half a minute confessing what a big fan of Paul he was (prompting Davis to ask that the questioner's mic be taken away) before getting to a query.

That was about all there was to it. Paul delivered a couple of funny soundbites. Davis generally looked like he didn’t want to be there, and he did little, despite his assertion that he is in a better place than he once was, to disprove the notion that he is not.

Nobody asked the question that this lifeless, depressing event deserved: why – star power aside – anybody should care about it at all.

Gervonta Davis Doesn’t Care If Fans Upset He’s Fighting Jake Paul, Not Lamont Roach

Gervonta Davis doesn’t care if boxing fans are bothered by him fighting Jake Paul rather than taking a rematch with Lamont Roach.

The unbeaten WBA lightweight champion stated exactly that during a press conference Monday night in New York to promote his November 14 bout with Paul at Kaseya Center in Miami.

“Why should I care? Why should I care what they think, when y’all switch?,” Davis asked. “Somebody can have a bad day and y’all switching on who y’all favorite fighter is or who this person is supposed to fight. Like y’all need to sit back and be fans and just enjoy the sport. Y’all even talk about people personal lives. Like when it come to that?”

Davis is obviously bothered by the public’s reaction to his 12-round majority draw with Roach on March 1 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The powerful southpaw from Baltimore entered the ring as a 16-1 favorite, yet Roach gave Davis the most difficult fight of his career.

If referee Steve Willis correctly called a knockdown when Davis took a knee early in the ninth round, the three-division champion would’ve lost on the scorecards.

Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs), seemingly intent to redeem himself, exercised his contractual right to an immediate rematch with Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs). It was pushed back twice, however, before Baltimore’s Davis ultimately decided to oppose Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) in a higher-profile event Netflix will stream worldwide.

Paul, a cruiserweight, most recently weighed in 65 pounds higher than Davis. The rules regarding their fight haven’t been specified.

The prevailing opinion is Davis didn’t want to fight Roach again. Davis, 30, argued Monday that he is held to a different standard than some of his contemporaries.

“And y’all keep on talking about fighting somebody?” Davis said before alluding to Shakur Stevenson. “Didn’t he just have a fight? What happened? ... He won, right? But how he look in it? Exactly. But y’all say some different [expletive] when it’s me, right? Because y’all want me to lose.

“When y’all see people in that limelight too long, they want somebody else, to come take that spot. ... That’s what happened with Floyd [Mayweather]. Y’all seen him too much and once y’all seen him so much, y’all started hating on him. It turned from love to hate.”

To be fair, he never cares what anyone thinks about him or his resume. For him, it's all about the money, which is fair enough. He doesn't have any sort of legacy, and if that's fine by him, then so be it.

Apparentley the weight limit for the exhibition is 88 kg.

Undercard Set — Four World Title Fights On Bill

Four title fights are on the docket for Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis on Nov. 14 at the Kaseya Center in Miami.

Alycia Baumgardner will defend her Ring, IBF, WBA and WBO junior lightweight titles against Leila Beaudoin in the co-main event. Also on the undercard, Gary Antuanne Russell makes the first defense of his WBA junior welterweight title against undefeated Andy Hiroaka. Ellie Scotney and Mayelli Flores will also clash in a bout for The Ring and undisputed junior featherweight titles.

The fourth title fight on the card is Yokasta Valle vs Yadira Bustillos for Valle’s WBC strawweight title.

Baumgardner (16-1-1, 7 KOs), who was previously the undisputed champion at junior lightweight, is coming off a unanimous decision victory against Jennifer Miranda on July 11. Beaudoin (13-1, 2 KOs) of Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec, Canada, will be fighting in America for the first time and enters the contest having won four straight, with her most recent victory being a sixth-round stoppage of Elhem Mekhaled on June 27.

The bout will be 12 three-minute rounds as compared to the typical 10 two-minute rounds for women’s title fights.

“I am very thankful to be getting back in the ring on Friday, November 14, fighting in front of the world on Netflix,” Baumgardner said via press release. “Consistency is what keeps me sharp and makes me dangerous. Fighting 12x3:00 represents equality. Equality in boxing means giving champions a platform to show their greatness. I am here to show the world that I am built for any and everything.”

Russell vs Hiraoka could very well end up stealing the show, as they’re two of boxing’s best at 140 pounds, which stands as one of the best divisions in boxing. Russell (18-1, 17 KOs), 29, of Capitol Heights, Maryland, won the WBA title in a dominant unanimous decision victory over Jose Valenzuela on March 1. Hiraoka (24-0, 19 KOs), a 5-foot-11-and-a-half southpaw out of Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan, has won 10 straight by stoppage, with his latest win being a ninth-round technical knockout of Ismael Barroso on Sept. 3, 2024.

“I’m excited to be on an event of this magnitude and put the Russell family legacy on display live on Netflix,” Russell said. “Hiraoka is my mandatory challenger and a strong fighter. We will prepare as we always do and handle business. I will be the king of division for a long time, and defending my title will be the first step towards it.”

Scotney (11-0) of Lewisham, London, became the unified IBF, WBC and WBO junior featherweight champions with a one-sided unanimous decision victory over Yamileth Mercado on July 11 in her first fight in the U.S. Flores (13-1-1, 4 KOs) of Mexico nabbed the WBA title with a split decision victory over Nazarena Romero on May 10.

Valle (33-3, 10 KOs), 32, will be making her first defense of her WBC minimumweight title after winning it via unanimous decision against Elizabeth Lopez Corzo in November of last year. Bustillos (11-1, 2 KOs), 25, has won four in a row, including two by stoppage.

Also on the card is Avious Griffin (17-1, 16 KOs) vs Cesar Francis (14-2, 9 KOs).

195. When Tank heard that in the press conference, he was like, "Y'all said it was 190" haha.
What a joke.

The most I've seen in recent years for a walk-around weight regarding Tank is max. 150-160, probably closer to 150.

If Paul gets marmalized for round and after round, do you think "Real Boxing Fans" will finally love him ?
Or, at least forgive him ?

I think I have.
Tank is A REAL boxer - not far removed from P4P contention. And Paul is fighting him !
I'm impressed. :salut:

Yes, I know, BIG weight advantage, but Paul is basically a Youtuber boxing for 5 years and he's fighting a nasty finisher.
Imagine Tank will be highly motivated too... :bag:

I think the Russell vs Hiraoka fight could be fun to watch. As for Tank, I used to take my boxers to the Upton gym in Baltimore to spar. His coach would put him in with any of my guys when he was like 13-14 yrs old. He hit like a Tank. Yeah Fake Paul is way bigger but he doesn't have very good boxing skills. If there is any chance this isn't fixed like Paul's previous fights, Tank will land some really hard body shots to get inside and if he hits the head/chin with a good shot....he has a punchers chance.
