Is Canelo Still in YOUR Top Ten P4P?

Post by Taansend »

In Boxrecs The Peoples P4P Canelo is still ranked 7th.

I know everyone does their P4P their own way & I respect that. My own way is "what have you done in the last 30 months" PLUS I'll add in overall career after that.

But each to their own.

I now have Canelo around 11th. At best.

And while we're at it, where does Vergil rank? He beat Madrimov clearer than Bud did. Plus he just wiped out a respected, but maybe flawed, fighter at 154. I now have him 10th.

He's definitely not top 5 but he's probably somewhere just inside or just outside of the top 10. He has recent wins over Scull (23-0), Berlanga (23-2), Munguía (45-2), Charlo (35-2-1) and Ryder (32-7) which might not be the level of Crawford, Bivol, Inoue, Usyk and some others but it's a lot better than what many other top guys have been up to recently. His losses are to consensus p4p top 5 as well so not much harm done by that. This is from someone who thinks he lost the first two fights to Golovkin, is a drug cheat, ducked Benavidez and is generally overrated.

Great question.

I would say just outside, but it would be close.

I would have to have the following (I feel now above him).
Crawford, Usyk, Inoue, Bivol, Bam, Benevidez, Beterbiev, Stevenson - have to now be above him. Then we have others like Ennis, Haney, and some other lower weight guys who I need to see more of who I think Alvarez is competing with.

Inoue
Usyk
Crawford
Rodriguez
Benavidez
Bivol
Beterbiev
Alvarez
Nakatani
Espinoza

This would be my top ten right now.

Based on recent form and activity I’d also slide Canelo just outside the top ten, while Vergil’s momentum and quality wins make a strong case for him cracking the lower end of the list.

In short, no. He had a so-so performance against Crawford in what was supposed to be the biggest fight of the year, a seemingly uninterested effort against Scull, and go-through-the-motions wins over Berlanga and Munguia. To me, that doesn't keep you on the list of the world's top ten P4P boxers.
