Respect to Cotto
Respect to Cotto
I'm a Cotto fan and can only applaud his willingness to box Quintana in his first fight as a welter. Have seen Quintana once or twice and he's a class act. Hope this fight is being shown in th UK as it looks an absolute belter.

Cotto is fearless and does take tough matches - fair play to him/his team.
He looked very drawn in his last few fights so the step up isnt before time.
He is an exciting fighter but I dont think he will have it all his own way at welter. Great fighter to watch though with his high guard and combination punching

Yes, I think Cotto will have it tough at Welterweight. Though technically he is sound, he has also relied on being able to physically overwhelm his opponents when he does let his hands go. He is not especially quick, nor really a devastating one punch hitter, he breaks his opponents with classy combinations to the body and head.
At Welterweight he will be facing guys who physically are a match for him and there's a lot of big rangy guys in the Collazo mould.
It will be very interesting to see how he fares, I suspect his career will be short lived at Welter, but I cannot see him moving back down to 140. Cotto's already taken a fair bit of punishment in his career, I think in a couple of years time, it will be all over at top level.

For sure Cotto will have it tougher at welterweight (bigger oponents, harder punches) but on the plus side he will no longer be weight drained. He is a class act, one of the finest boxers i have ever seen. Many people write Cotto off because he's been rocked a few times, but he showed his heart and more on all those occassions.
He will be around for some time, i'm sure of it. Remember, one loss does not end a fighters career!

Cotto is definitely doing the right thing in moving up weight, and I don't think he had too much choice about it: he's looked half starved to death before his last few fights.
Bit it's rare a fighter will hit the ground running at a new weight, and his handlers have picked a potential nightmare debut for him at 147.
Quintana is a slick boxer with a seemingly good chin, plus he can hit hard as well.
Credit to Cotto, as he doesn't duck the tough fights does he.
This one has upset written all over it. But even if he loses, I think Cotto's class will tell and he'll make an impact at welter and, lightmiddle too.

I don't think it'd be an upset. My guess is Quintana will be the favourite.MightyWarrior wrote:Cotto is definitely doing the right thing in moving up weight, and I don't think he had too much choice about it: he's looked half starved to death before his last few fights.

Do you really think that Jim? Cotto is 5'8" with a 72" reach i'd say that makes him about average for a welter. Hatton on the other hand is small for the weight. I reckon the move up might do wonders for Miguels career.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Yes, I think Cotto will have it tough at Welterweight. Surely if Cotto is so suited to welterweight he would have moved up ages ago? Especially given that he struggles to make 140 so much.
Maybe there is a reason why he was held back from moving up? Maybe his handlers did'nt fancy it until he could'nt possibly make 140 anymore?
It was'nt as if Miguel was staying at 140 to unify or chase the big fights was it?
Maybe I'am being cynical, but if,as some suggest,he is going to be so much better at welter, why did'nt he move up long ago?
All that said,I hope it all goes well for him,and I will certainly be rooting for him against Quintana.Looking forward to it.

I reckon Cotto will be better and stronger at welter. It's obvious that he's killing himself to make the light welter limit, and his punch resistance and strength are being affected by it.
That said, I think the Quintana fight will be very close indeed. I can see it being a classics boxer vs. puncher type deal, with Quintana doing good work on the outside and mixing it up well, and Cotto trying to land a lot of bombs. Could go either way, I reckon.

cotto is still young and growing,so it made sense to do the lower weight for as long as it was possible.he won all his fights and is unbeaten so the strategy has proven correct. he has had his education, and i reckon now hes ready to move up , and mop up at welter.doubt if he will have to fight any fighter who will be heavier than him come fight time,so nobody should have the strenghth to bully him. i cant see anyone on the horizon to trouble him.theres the doubt about his chin, but so far hes been in with good opponents, and it is he who has wrecked them. if cottos people are taking the quintana fight so soon its because they are 99 percent certain he ll do the businessotherwise they would have taken a lesser opponent.if this is the case, then get ready for cotto to dominate for as long as he can be bothered.i really believe that he has strolled through the light welterweight division up until now.his toughest opponent has been makin the weight, now that he doesnt have to ,the others should start worrying. after quintana they should get him juddah, just to put to bed all this chin nonsense.then people might give him the credit he desrves.

i think cotto has been considered "the great up and coming world prospect" for too long now. i know he is a classy boxer and he is a courageous guy and all of that but for me he has to step up to claim a real mark on the sport and he has to do it at 147lbs. i thought a year ago that he was going to be awesome but now i dont.
for me he gets found out at welter within 3 fights.

I think it was mostly him trying to bomb them out for what were two pretty intense crowds. I remember he took a few good shots flush, early, from Randall Bailey when he was boxing him in a relatively placid casino a few years back.topper123 wrote:Does anyone here think the chinks in Cotto's chin in his fights against Torres and Corley were partly due to weightmaking or is that a weakness in any case.
Would be a proper handful with a heavier engine. They might be banking on that with this match.ALI wrote:He is a class act, one of the finest boxers i have ever seen.
