Re: Post Your Scorecards
Reading the back and forth here regarding the 10 point scoring system, I've been inspired to try out an alternative system.
Seamus is absolutely right, too often you end up with a clear, dominant round scored the same as a round that could have gone either way.
I think it was Casablanca who suggested a system where the fighters start each round with zero points rather than 10? I like that idea and I'm going to score a couple of fights over the weekend using that system.
If anyone could recommend any close fights with alot of close rounds I'd be grateful.

Courageous effort from Wooden, he keeps it close early, and continues to get brave throughout the fight if he thinks Tua might be gassed, but eventually settles into survival mode because he's given no choice by Tua's assault. The scores read at the end have this much closer than I had it. Good tough scrap with a good tough journeymen. Wooden shows a hellacious chin here taking several full blooded shots from Tua, and never going down.

David Tua v Monte Barrett I (some crap title)
Round 1: 10-10 Even
Round 2: 10-9 Tua
Round 3: 10-9 Barrett
Round 4: 10-9 Tua
Round 5: 10-9 Tua
Round 6: 10-9 Barrett
Round 7: 10-9 Barrett
Round 8: 10-10 Even
Round 9: 10-9 Tua
Round 10: 10-9 Barrett
Round 11: 10-10 Even
Round 12: 10-7 Barrett (scores a knockdown and Tua is docked a point for rough-housing ((threw Barrett to the deck)))
Total: 116-113 Barrett (actual scores: 115-111 Tua and 2 scores of 113-113 for a majority Draw)
To begin, I just want to say I've always been a massive Tua fan, but I gotta call them the way I see them. It wasn't scintillating stuff because Barrett lacked a big punch and Tua did his usual landing one at a time style of punching, so it's up to the judge on his preference as well. With 3 Even rounds I could very well have this a draw if I was leaning towards Tua, but it is what it is. That last round clearly threw a wrench in the works for two of the judges. I thought Tua started out great, but then lost the point for roughing up Barrett - a bit harsh I thought - but then Barrett turned tiger and dropped Tua. So a round that started out so well for Tua (I would have had Tua the winner by a point if he kept the head) turned into 3 points for Barrett.

Gil, despite Valan incorrectly calling it a no-knockdown in the 14th, it wouldn't have mattered. This bout was scored on a rounds basis. So it still would have been only a round scored for Patterson. But it should have been called a knockdown regardless.gilgamesh wrote: ↑06 Apr 2026, 02:10 Floyd Patterson vs Jimmy Ellis

Man, Tua frustrated me throughout the years. I was always screaming "let your hands go!" He tried to make one of his legendary late finishes but was lacking in the tank. But he has himself to blame. I barely saw him throw a punch until the 6th round. Barrett was no world-shaker but I'm glad the right man got it.

Here was my card for Ellis-Patterson.Casablanca wrote: ↑28 Feb 2026, 08:13 I watched and scored Ellis' title defense of the WBA title in Stockholm, Sweden against Floyd Patterson last night. It was Ellis’ first defense of the WBA title after winning the WBA tournament and would be the last fight for Ellis before Frazier and the unification of the division in February of 1970. What a fight it was. Patterson fought a great fight for where he was at in his career. I scored it very narrowly for Elllis, but it was a really close fight. I scored it on the 10 point must system. Re: Post Your Scorecards
Gil, this is how I scored the two Patterson - Quarry fights, for what it's worth. They were very close but I should mention that this wasn't scored on the rounds system you mentioned, but California's 1 point system. So it's one point for a round, no points for an even round and an additional point for scoring a knockdown. And if one finds that is confusing it really isn't. The late west coast boxing writer Bill O'Neill once told me that California's scoring system was exactly like the 10-point system used today, only less math. And he was absolutely correct. The scores come out the samegilgamesh wrote: ↑06 Apr 2026, 15:36 Floyd Patterson vs Jerry Quarry

This was a dull fight. Ellis would not follow Quarry to the ropes, which drew it to center ring, putting the counter-punching Quarry now as the aggressor. But I think Ellis did himself a disservice there as his lightning-quick right hand always seemed to find Jerry at the ropes. I would have told him nail him and then get out, but he just drew it back to center ring without doing anything. Also, the rounds Jerry was picking up was as the aggressor, and he actually didn't do badly at it. I always doubted a bit of the broken back theory until doing some research, which did mete out the fact there were broken bones discovered and he was in a body-cast after this fight for some time. He didn't look as mobile as I have seen him in other fights, so this may have been a contributor to the events that didn't unfold. Again, not a great fight but I still enjoy seeing some of these old historical bouts.

I notice the HBO crew gives Toney a lot of credit for winning the jabbing contest here, and he doesn't do that. He lands the better hooks and right hands for sure, but Griffin's got the better, more accurate jab.
So upon revisiting the 2 Toney-Griffin fights. I saw them as much closer than I had initially seen them when watching 'em the first time around.

Re: Post Your Scorecards
The Nunn KO destroyed his reputation. He was a really good fighter, the first to beat McCallum (second fight also could have gone either way). I remember the Barkley fight and it was pretty one-sidedSeamus wrote: ↑14 Apr 2026, 16:26 Sumbu Kalambay v Iran Barkley

I'd like to get some feedback on this one because Kalambay won a MD. Tough fight to score. Kalambay was the better boxer and landed the cleaner blows, but so many times when he did, Collins just kept coming forward firing with both hands. He landed alot of shots to the body the arms, and had SK's right eye puffy. Reminded me a little of Antuofermo-Hagler I though Kalambay missed alot of punches as well. At the end I pretty much gave it to Collins on aggression.
