Andy Ruiz looks to angle his way back into the heavyweight mix
‘I want a piece of the pie’: Andy Ruiz looks to angle his way back into the heavyweight mix
Andy Ruiz aims to get back in action and land another big fight.
Andy Ruiz spent some time talking about this weekend’s big event in front of the Egyptian pyramids and says he’s hoping to find himself in some big fights soon, as he feels left out of the gravy train provided by Turki Alalshikh.
“I would love to fight Usyk,” Ruiz said. “We even had talks, we were supposed to fight him but things happened, everybody took different routes. It’s like I’m too risky for a lot of other heavyweights who have different plans. But once I’m ready, once I’m already fighting, they have no choice but to fight me. So a lot of people haven’t seen me at 100% and right now I feel good, I feel strong.
“I’m hungry. I want a piece of the f-ckin’ pie that everybody’s getting that I’ve been missing out. But I’ve been smart because I’ve been recovering my hand…While I was recovering I was seeing everybody fight, everybody losing, everybody getting their ass kicked, everybody getting a rematch and fighting again and again for no reason instead of giving other heavyweights opportunities. But I’m back. That’s what it is.”
Ruiz last fought in a majority draw against Jarrell Miller back in August 2024, and he’ll surely have his work cut out for him if he’s going to do more than simply be thrown a lifeline to a big fight.

He should probably actually fight someone then. He's not boxed in 2 years. 1 fight in 4 years. He's been out of shape, even more so than before, for 7 years. He couldn't even beat Miller in his last fight so no way he can beat someone that's actually good. He's wasted his opportunity.

I would definitely love to see Ruiz return. Doesn't even matter against who. I'd just like to see him back in the mix.joshj909 wrote: ↑23 May 2026, 04:42 He should probably actually fight someone then. He's not boxed in 2 years. 1 fight in 4 years. Ruiz vs Zhang would be wonderful because both guys are kinda on the bubble of mattering, and it'd be like a make or break for either man.
Any combo of Zhang/Ruiz/Bakole/Miller would be good really as far as getting fringe contenders a meaningful fight that could make them a part of the picture.
Re: Andy Ruiz looks to angle his way back into the heavyweight mix
Andy Ruiz Jr. probably needs a couple of comeback fights before anyone can seriously talk about him facing a top heavyweight. By the time that happens, he'll be pushing 38.
Since beating AJ seven years ago, he's only won two fights.
He's lost a lot of weight, which is good, but he's also likely lost a fair bit of muscle along the way. Looking at how slim he is now, he could probably make the Bridgerweight limit without much trouble.
I think what’ll inevitably happen very soon, though, is that Andy will have a warm-up bout to shed some ring rust against a journeyman, immediately prior to being used as a stepping-stone sacrificial lamb for a rising star, such as Moses Itauma.

Ruiz owns a pizza place near me.
They have a Wing Wednesday Special.

As for him fighting seriously again, we've been hearing this since the Joshua rematch. Stop talking about it & just have 2 or 3 lower level fights just to get used to the feeling of fighting again. There's always talk of a comeback. There's always photos of a slimmed down Ruiz. But there's very rarely any fights.

Yeah. I miss the days when every fighter didn't announce he's making a comeback. He just came backTaansend wrote: ↑29 May 2026, 12:47 Ruiz owns a pizza place near me.

If you've had a look at him, as he tries to angle his way back in, would you say he is looking at more the acute variety or more the obtuse?Taansend wrote: ↑29 May 2026, 12:47 Ruiz owns a pizza place near me.

Ruiz has idled and eaten his way into irrelevance.
I used to be a fan of his, but I've completely lost interest in him.
It's good that he's finally realised that looking like a space hopper is not ideal for a professional athlete, or anybody else, for that matter, but it's too little too late.

Is it true he earned £60m for the second Joshua fight? Or did I dream that?

It's almost 7 years ago but I thought it was 7.5 million for the rematch.

£6m is a lot of money for a challenger. Fair play to the guy.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑Yesterday, 12:21It was around $6m for the first fight.
He basically took Miller’s purse.
