I think a movie about Larry Holmes would actually be a pretty interesting story. I mean think about it...
Here's a guy who becomes champion after Ali, but nobody cares, so he ends up fighting his idol and mentor, wins the fight, everybody hates Holmes ever worse. Then he ends up fighting some pretty weak opposition in an era with limited talent, the press rips at him, and then the biggest fight of his life happens in Gerry Cooney, a more or less hyped up white giant who knocked over a bunch of veterans.
But then again the story wouldnt be good...cus unlike Rocky, unlike Cinderella Man, unlike The Champ, there is no happy ending because Holmes was never appreciated in his own time.

Perhaps not by the masses...but true boxing fans couldn't help but appreciate Larry, both at the time...and now...25 years later...be great to have a prime Holmes around now...what a difference in the HW landscape that would be...an actual consistantly outstanding, well trained & conditioned, highly professional heavyweight...ahhh, the good old days...IrishRufusMurphy wrote: Holmes was never appreciated in his own time.

I have posted this before but is has been awhile. I think Holmes fought fairly good opposition. But it depends on how you look at it. You can look at it from the standpoint that he beat alot of guys who were good at the time. But then once he fought them they went bust soon their after. Guys like Ken Norton, Tim Witherspoon, Carl The Truth Williams. Even Leon Spinks went on a minni roll before his fight with Holmes. He had gotten his act together and was probably in the best fighting condition of his career, but he is another guy who went bust soon after that. So he won't be rememberd as a great opponent, but at the time I would say he was a good opponent. I think their are a fair number of guys that Holmes fought that you could go down the list and say the same thing about.
Yo guys -- "Out From Ali's Shadow: The Larry Holmes Story" was awarded Best Sports Doc in the film festival --

He fought everyone he was asked to fight. Never ducked anyone. You can't ask anything more of a champion.Nile4000 wrote:If he only fought more heavyweights who were deserving of a title shot, instead of Scott Frank or Marvis Frazier.Great heavy nonetheless.
The way that Cooney fight was set up, only a great champion could have gone in that place and won that night. Cooney was a damn good fighter at that point; Holmes will tell you he hit harder than anyone else he ever fought, and Holmes faced a prime Mike Tyson, and he also fought Earnie Shavers twice.
Did Holmes really say Cooney hit harder than Shavers?jsc1973 wrote:He fought everyone he was asked to fight. Never ducked anyone. Holmes always said that Shavers hit the hardest, though he did credit Cooney with a great left hook to the balls.J-C wrote:Did Holmes really say Cooney hit harder than Shavers?jsc1973 wrote:He fought everyone he was asked to fight.
