I totally agree Gilroy has some great fighters on his resume but to put him on the same level a Buchannon just silly.Collins2000 wrote:jimglen wrote:2cd tier, at best (???)
let me offer a little insight if I may,
Bert Gilroy found himself at 'odds' with 5 British and World Boxing greats from Welterweight to Heavyweight (Roderick, McAvoy, Mills, Woodcock), and including a young and 'up and coming' Randolph Turpin and lets not forget "Suicidal negotiations" (makingweight - 1947, nearly 3 years a L-HW at this point), for the Great Cerdan fight!!!
2cd tier??? I HARDLY THINK SO!
Jim, you still don't understand do you?
Not everyone, no matter how much we love them as people, can be in the 1st tier of fighters.
If everyone was in the 1st tier there would be no point in this forum, in any lists or any discussion. In fact, there would be no point in boxing at all.
People like Gilroy did not achieve any thing like the results Buchanan did; that is why Ken is in the first tier and your granddad isn't. No other reason.

I get the impression that Salvador Sanchez is most popular choice for Mexico.
If anyone objects, speak soon, or forever hold your piece. He goes on the list.
Can I give Oktay Urkal to Turkey? Can I give Kostya Tszyu to Russia?
They are definately the best boxers from their respective countries, should we care what their passports say?

Huh? Why? We're talking best here remember, not greatest. Accomplishments are less important in this thread. I replied to you with the same thing on page 1.theone wrote:Sanchez may be the popular vote, but it is absolutely the wrong one. As great as Sanchez was even contemplating putting him over Chavez on this type of list is rediculous.
thanks DoubleM
that's why I gave the punters a bit of a 'break-down' on some of the Best of Scotland, who Ability wise were/are better than Buchanan...
Achievements DON'T mean 'shit' when your talking 'strictly' Skill & Ability (Talent) and unfortunately too many people are quick not to recognise that...
of course going by what these "achievements mean everything" people, then fighters like Burley, Marshall, Darcy, Len Harvey, Jock McAvoy and the like shouldn't be included among the Very Best then (???)
These are Scotland's BEST and little Peter Keenan can also be included, but given my extensive research it is most certainly Benny Lynch & Bert Gilroy!

I would have thought it was skill and ability that enabled Buchanan to accomplish all that he did.jimglen wrote:thanks DoubleM

Are you suggesting Ken got some special favours or something? From all I have read, Buchanan got very few breaks. He's a guy who didn't get on with the boxing establishment in the UK, hence he was forced to travel to Puerto Rico to win a world title from a very solid champ rather than have
them bring in a soft touch and let him fight at home. If he didn't have skill and ability as you suggest I doubt he could have done what he did.
I know you have a desire to see your grandfather (Gilroy) given some recognition but why does it have to be at the expense of guys who achieved far more than he did?
