Here's a link to a document that lists all the recorded ring deaths since the 1700s. Notice that on May 5th 1800, two guys called Butts and Collins both died from injuries sustained by each other in their fight. They actually clobbered each other to death!

There was a world class lightweight /light welter in the 70's named Hector Thompson who had the misfortune of having 2 opponents die following fights with him. He was not a heavy hitter which made it a bit bizarre. Thompson went on to challenge Duran several years after the first death and he challenged Cervantes a couple of years after the second death

Jeff Simms, HW contender in the 80's was shot. He was shot I believe 7 times previously, the 8th time however wasnt to be and died of his wound.

Duane Thomas - A fighter from the famed Kronk gym under Steward's guidance was murdered not long ago in a drug deal go wrong.

Trevor Berbick, Deuk koo kim, Johnny Owens etc are also included in this tragic list.

Well there's of course the very recent death of Leavander Johnson, who died 5 days after his 11th round knockout loss to Jesus Chavez on 9/17/05 due to a severe subdural hematoma he suffered.

Chris Calvin/Shawn Thomas

Post by Dart340 »

The one that stands out for me was the ESPN fight in '85 where Chris Calvin knocked a Detroit fighter out named Shawn Thomas in the first and his head hit the ring floor. He died in the arena with his wife there watching. Very tragic. I remember it vividly.
