Like it or loathe it Floyd is the epitomy of hit and not getting hit. Hes never going to be about taking a shot to land a bigger 1. The excitement you can get in his fights are when he lands combinations. Its hard to land combinations against slick southpaws or when you have a broken hand (Baldomir)jamesmcdonnell wrote:I think Floyd knows he cannot afford to stand and fight against a genuine 147 lber. Baldomir, though not a puncher, could probably have put him on queer street had he landed a flush shot, so Floyd chose to pick and poke all night long.viciousmaussa wrote:Floyd was relatively aggressive vs Corley and Mitchell, but I noticed he got stung maybe 3 or 4 times by southpaw lefts. His attitude has definitely changed, I agree.Terence wrote:I used to love watching Floyd, the Gatti fight was the peak of his defensive ability to stay close, avoid shots and do damage but since then he has seemed reluctant to do anything but peck and move.
Against Mitchell he showed a nice right hand to the body and I thought that was a shot which would give Hatton a lot of problems balance-wise if they fought. He used it effectively against Judah but since getting dropped, not called, in that fight he has crossed the line into extreme negativity in order to creep into P4P all-time status.
Floyd fans will go crazy and tell me he is fighting bigger guys and all that but that is his choice, he did not out-grow any division, he just never fancied dominating a division in recent years.
A Floyd fan Called Matty something or other complained that Floyd had a sore mitt in the Baldo fight but he was negative from the get-go.
Moving is good when you do it the way Hopknis did versus Tito, not so good when you do what Hopkins did versus a terrible Howard Eastman.
It seems that to be a pound for pound number one, it helps if you are a) negative, b) move, move and move some more, even if there's little coming back, c) try your best not to take one single shot/risk, d) be an abrasive American. I really think Pac has taken over the #1 spot, by far, as opposed to "catching up" as Ring magazine would have it.
I hope that DLH manages to catch up with Floyd when they fight, otherwise we could be in for a long and very boring night, with Floyd fighting extremely negatively whether he wins or loses. One thing Floyd won't want is to get knocked out by Oscar.
Now supposedly against Baldomir he damaged his right hand and couldn't use it. He still won a shutout. Now was it really a broke hand or fear of fighting a bigger man that stopped a domination?
Its hard to judge Floyd at the moment because hes just fought 2 of the slickest southpaws P4P that are hard to look good against unless you level them followed by a tough underated pressure fighter he fought with a supposed broken hand.
