Hagler-Finnegan I and II
Hagler-Finnegan I and II
I have heard that Hagler found these fights tough going.
Where these fights filmed and what are board members recollections of them?
Where these fights filmed and what are board members recollections of them?
Niether was filmed as far as I know, (never seen them going around amongst fight sellers
) ...having read the reports of them they were both closely fought fights with Hagler dishing out the harder more accurate shots and Kevin getting cut up in both... Kevins main failling point was a lack of ko power and was obviously a mayjor handicap against someone like Hagler..... but he certainly gave Marvin a fight in both bouts and was only stopped because of the cuts...

What is with the various alterations to your username VM??mad gear gang wrote:Didn't that guy in the back of BM have them? The cockney guy that still sells vhs only. You used to be able to buy a full list off him for £1 & I think he had Hagler-Finnegan. I doubt the quality would be any good and they would probably have been manky NTSC to pal jobs.
I just changed it because my old one was made up without too much thought.TerribleTerry wrote:What is with the various alterations to your username VM??mad gear gang wrote:Didn't that guy in the back of BM have them? I remember now, the guy is S Attenborrow, who MAY have it.
Surely the local TV picked it up, was it in Philadelphia? There will be archive footage of it somewhere.
Anyone else know of this?mad gear gang wrote:Didn't that guy in the back of BM have them? The cockney guy that still sells vhs only. I bought a few tapes off Stuart back in the day - Ringpost Videos I think his company was called??mad gear gang wrote:I just changed it because my old one was made up without too much thought.TerribleTerry wrote:What is with the various alterations to your username VM??mad gear gang wrote:Didn't that guy in the back of BM have them? They did the trick at the time when I was a youngster desperate to see American fight bills/classic fights but looking back the picture quality was variable pre DVD!
He did me a tape years ago, one fight was put on twice and another fight had the last round cut down to the last 10 seconds!... suffice to say I didnt go back... I still have one of his catalogues though, dont think he had these fights as they are bouts I've been looking for for the past 20 years... but I'll keep my eyes open, might be worth asking around on the cyberzone forum for them... :x :x :x

Yes Stuart used to run Ringpost video, I used to trade with him years back - he had a Pal-NTSC conversion machine in his house.
Don't think he ever had the Finnegan fights, I've NEVER seen them on any list over the years. Not televised you'd think..
Seems there's only 8-10 bouts available of Hagler, pre title win. Unless some have surfaced recently.
I've never seen any of those early Philly losses he had for instance.

I didn't say most deserving of the a world title, but most deserving of a world title fight. Finnighan vs Foster was for the title.TerribleTerry wrote:I would put his brother higher I think.stujones wrote:Thinking of Finighan got me thinking of British fighters most most deserving of a world title fight but never had one.
His name must be high on such a list.
He was living with Bob Foster until getting cracked late with that awesome left hook..
A guy I worked with, who is not into boxing, was talking about 2 brothers ex-fighters, around the Hillingdon area, where he has lived. They were the Finnigan brothers, my friend said that they were both nutters, one walks round with some medal on his chest and the other is the local hard nut, drinks alot and gets into a few rumbles.

Peerless Jim Driscoll is head and shoulders above all other UK fighters who never got a shot at the World title. Kevin Finnegan was a very good fighter and as hard as nails but way below the level of the great Welsh master.stujones wrote:Thinking of Finighan got me thinking of British fighters most most deserving of a world title fight but never had one.

Finnegan was fringe world class for sure but when he was in his prime he couldn't get past Alan Minter and if he had got a shot in the mid-late 1970's at the World title Monzon would have crushed him inside 8 rounds.
Anyone think that Conteh-Finnegan 1 isn't as close, and isn't as great, as the reputation would have it? I felt Conteh was a very clear winner yet the excellent, late Harry Mullan reckoned Finnegan nicked it.
Minter-KEVIN Finnegan 2, now that's a great one. Still had Minter winning thanks to clean punching, though.
Some of the British level fights of that era -particularly the above - piss on a lot of today's 'world title' stuff.

I very much doubt it would have been that one-sided.Finnegan had a truly granite chin and was very good technically in a similar style to Bouttier.Offensively he was a bit better than the Frenchman and was more durable and versatile.KOJOE90 wrote:Peerless Jim Driscoll is head and shoulders above all other UK fighters who never got a shot at the World title. Barring cuts he would almost certainly have gone the distance and i expect would been competitive without ever looking like actually winning. He'd take 4 or 5 rounds from Carlos who was not the type of fighter to over-extend himself when it's apparent his opponent isn't going anywhere.
Finnegan was definitely a world class middleweight.Easily as good as the likes of Watson,Benn, Eubank and Graham. His record is very deceptive as to how good and skilled he actually was.
Yeah I think Finnegan would have given Monzon a good fight... Finnegan was a counter puncher and I think thats why he gave Hagler a hardtime and he did have a great chin... Monzon would probably cut him up and force a stoppage late, ...but Kevin wouldnt have been 'crushed' he would have given Monzon a tough fight...
