NZ child killer/boxer

Post by oliverfennell »

When I was in Melbourne last year while the Commonwealth Games were on, there was quite a fuss about a Kiwi boxer who was a convicted child killer and was on the NZ team after coming out of prison. He didn't do very well but obviously his notoriety preceded him.

Any news on him since the Games?

I don't think anybody expected him to be any good, just there was outrage at his selection for the team considering what he'd done.

I'm surprised some unscrupulous promoter hasn't snapped him up; I'm sure they'd get bums on seats to see him get beat.

I dont think his past should've had anything to do with his selection. if he's done his time then no reason why he can't participate.

The death of his daughter had nothing to do with boxing.

What do you think of Matthew Hilton's comeback, then?

Yeah I heard Orbell was good and there was a bit of a buzz over his debut.

ISo is Pownceby any good? I heard he wasn't actually up to much; it was just his notoriety which created the headlines.

Powceby was convicted of manslaughter, which implies lack of intent to kill. The baby was malnourished at the time of its death, which happened when the mother was out buying take away food. Powceby was 19 at the time.

There has been a lot of stuff written about him becoming a "born again" christian in recent times. Last refuge of the scroundrel, perhaps?

I say get him a fight with Wlad:

No three knock down rule

No standing eight count

No canvas 10 count

Only Wlad can stop the fight

Pownceby wont be a world champion but he should if he stays active and wants to fight on for 3/4 years become a very good regional fighter. He has a very solid amateur background that will hold him in goos stead.

Probably making his pro run a bit late though age wise!
