Felix Trinidad vs Roy Jones Announced Early 2008
This should be fun, a surprising comeback fight for Trinidad.

It's going to be at 170 lbs. I was just thinking that when I first read the article - I was wondering how these guys would fare against the best in the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. I think it's a good spectacle if they fight each other but dangerous to fight any little known fighter in his prime who has hunger and a bit of talent. I would not be surprised at all if Hopkins forgot about Calzaghe and went after the winner of this instead.

Both are past their best no doubt about that. Jones has been more active but will his already diminishing punch resistance be further deteriorated by losing the extra 7lbs? Makes it a little more interesting IMO. This less elusive version of Jones is hardly as defensively adept as Wright was at 160 against Tito.

Crap pointless fight. Both men are washed up shadows of their former selves.
Johnson hits a damned sight harder than Tito does, especially these days, Tito's balance looks shot to shit and anyone who can move even a bit can take his power away from him.
Jones should win this, he may even stop Tito as he is much the bigger stronger man.

Why not?KOJOE90 wrote:Awfull matchup. Both are shot and Trinidad is no 170lb'er. Roy is a shadow of the fighter he was 10 years ago but he will still box rings around the shot, rusty and overweight Trinidad.
What next? Hamed vs Kelly II?
It will sell tickets
It just goes to show the lack of depth in terms of talent and Marquee names in Boxing today.
Once these guys finish, DeLaHoya etc, who is left?
No One.

I thought Jones was shot but he isn't. He had a mid career crisis, and now he's adjusting to the fact that his feet have slowed down. He was actually good against the aggressive Hanshaw. I can see him having a Toney-style career resurgence. i.e. another good win or two.
Ultimately, I'm normally against these old men fights. But Jones was actually aggressive in stages with Hanshaw, though he had to conserve energy on the ropes a lot. Tito couldn't get through Wright's guard, and Wright may have just been wrong for him. But Trinidad did look good against Mayorga a couple of years back. Who knows, it could be dreck or it could be good.
This COULD be an interesting part of Jones' career. Unlike in his prime when he was too fast, he now has to face adversity. A lot of great fighters have shaken themselves out of shit periods. Both of RJJ's previous opponents to different degrees threw themselves at Roy from the opening bell. Ajamu was fvcked after rd 1, totally knackered. Hanshaw gave him what he needs - competitive rounds.

Holds no interest for me i'm afraid. Big names from the past just isn't enough anymore. Like someone said: Yawn.
The victor will not prove anything in a match up like this. Jones always has the fragile look since coming back down to 175 from heavy and to hear it is made at 170 is extremely worrying. Doesn't look as if he has 5lbs to spare. I would much rather see Jones back behind the mic with HBO. I always enjoyed his input and he knows his stuff, he could give us something Merchant couldn't, talking from experience.
As for Tito, I'm sick of the long lay offs then coming back for 1 or 2 fights then disappearing again. He had a great career but he really is yesterdays news.

I could not disagree with you more. So what if it sell tickets, popularity has little to do with quality. WWE does very well on PPV but I don't buy it.KO Artist wrote:Why not?KOJOE90 wrote:Awfull matchup. Both are shot and Trinidad is no 170lb'er. And are you seriously saying that there is nothing left in Boxing apart from Tito, Jones Jr and De La Hoya????
There are countless young, excellent and promising fighters on the rise or already established.
Some Boxing fans always say that once faided 'big star' fighters X, Y & Z have gone there is nobody left to take their place but the long history of tells a VERY different story.
