They did fight once at the Olympic Trials I believe, and Taylor won. He was 21 I think and Pavlik was 17.

Taylor beat Pavlik 11-5 at the US Olympic Trials in 2000. Yes, Taylor was 21 and Pavlik 17.

Yep - and Pavlik lost in the Challenger's Bracket to Anthony Hanshaw, 15-7.

Just for fun - more amateur trivia re Pavlik:

Kelly was 2 months short of turning 18 at the Olympic Trials.

Sechew Powell beat him in the 2000 Championships semifinals, 22-12 (2 months short of turning 18).

He lost in the 1999 Golden Gloves in his first bout to James Webb (he was 17 then); he won the 1999 Under-19 Championships; he lost in the National PAL in his first bout to Dante Craig, 4-1 and that was his national experience for that year.

In 1998, he lost in his first bout at the JO Nationals to Jose Celaya, 4-1 he was 16); won the Junior Golden Gloves in July. He won the Senior (JO) 147 Lb. division at the National PAL in October. He probably participated in and/or won Silver Gloves tournaments as a JO (I don't have all the SG results from way back).

Just goes to show you how the pro game and the amateur side are two different things entirely. That amateur result didn't help Jermain out any last night. Ouch.

I thought Pavlik would win and I predicted a tough bout, but I didn't expect Pavlik to get dropped and be almost out on his feet. He survived and showed the heart of a champion. Taylor made the mistake of backing up to the ropes and then getting hit. It was a good exciting bout.

21 V 17 is a hell of an advantage IMO for a middleweight.
I would expect the 21 year old to be a lot more physically mature.

You are referring to when Pavlik and Taylor were both amateurs, right??

That is usually true. However, Javier Molina won the Olympic Trials at 17 and he boxes in the 141# division. Mike Hunter just turned 19 and he won the trials at 201+.
