World Championships - Schedules and Results - Oct 23-Nov 3
All things considered, I think these Championships might be viewed as a success for Canada, where low expectations were in order. 5 of the 8 boxers lost their first match, but about 4 of them could not really really be expected to get wins at the international level.
The good news is that all three boxers who won in the first round also won in the second. So Canada will have three pugilists fighting for an Olympic spot. If one were to slip by (Trupish?) to the Quarters, there surely would be a party somewhere.

Also note at bottom of article the officials who have been "sanctioned."
I'll bet the Iranian and Bahamas refs are not experienced enough for the World level; would be fun to check the score cards and see what the 4 judges did, or didn't do. 8)Three Romanian boxers expelled from World Championships, banned for shoplifting
October 29, 2007
CHICAGO (AP) -- Three Romanian boxers were sent home from the world championships and banned for life after reportedly caught shoplifting at a department store.
Marius Bogdan Dinu, Ronald Gavril and Gabriel Julian Stan were caught shoplifting at Nordstrom's on Friday night, according to a release from the International Boxing Association. Chicago police had no information on the case, a spokesman said.
The three boxers and team manager were sent home Sunday, and the president of the Romania boxing federation issued a public apology to the AIBA, the organizers of the World Boxing Championships and other athletes.
Dinu, a heavyweight; Gavril, a middleweight; and Stan, a featherweight, were already out of the world championships after losing their first bouts.
"This misbehavior tarnishes the image and reputation of AIBA and the sport of boxing, all other federations and the other athletes competing in the (world championships)," AIBA President Ching-Kuo Wu said in a statement. "The measures AIBA has taken are a strong illustration of the new AIBA and its zero tolerance for misbehavior inside or outside of the ring."
The AIBA also announced "severe sanctions" against four judges: Suren Ghazaryan of Armenia; Seppo Lujanen of Finland; Shadrack Monethi of Lesotho; and Radisa Saric of Serbia. They will not be allowed to judge or referee the rest of the competition, which runs through Saturday.
Two other judges, Nasrollah Deishad of Iran and Alvin Sargent of the Bahamas, won't be allowed to referee, but can continue to judge. The AIBA did not say why the six were punished.
Yanez will make the 1/4 finals. Warren probably will too. I think Molina does too. The other guys all have very tough bouts remaining to qualify. Russell, Williams, Andrade, and Estrada all have to box very well to make the 1/4 finals. Hunter makes the 1/4 finals, but I don't know about making the semi-finals. He will most likely box the Russian boxer in the 1/4 finals. If he wins, he has a medal and Olympic berth, but it will be extremely difficult.
Of the 8, I'm hoping for at least 5 to qualify for the Olympics this week.

Thanks for this update. It is early. The field will get tougher in the next round. How many USA fighters will medal in the 12 weight divisons? I'm hoping for three, but I can't see more than that. I think Russia will medal in 9-10 of the 12 weight classes, and net a few golds.galaxy wrote:And also win-loss statistics:
Russia 17-0
China 18-2
USA 17-3
Kazakhstan 15-3
Azerbajian 12-5
Ukraine 12-5
Thailand 9-2
Italy 8-2
Armenia 9-3
Belarus 11-5
England 11-6
Ireland 10-6
France 9-6
Germany 10-7
Hungary 9-7
Is there any tv station or web link to watch the action?
FYI - there are only 11 weight divisions for male boxers.pound per pound wrote: Thanks for this update. It is early. The field will get tougher in the next round. What a total and absolute bummer! What happened to the quarters and the semis? Sigh.I also found it on my local FOX network channel (ie not sports channel) on Sunday afternoon after NFL. It is only scheduled for one hour 3:30-4:30 CST for me, which means this is probably going to be heavily edited, or only a couple of fights - both possibilities being a major disappointment.
.Banned for life for shoplifting! Wow. Have they ever heard of due process
We are talking about Romanian, not U.S., citizens. I'm sure they also decided to take care of it internally rather than have the delegation stay for months going through the American justice system. Saved a lot of hassle on both sides. I would also hope we would take stringent actions if it were any of ours.

divisions
Thanks. I thought there were 12. I wish the pros would adopt these 11 weight classes. It would help define better champions.Dennis wrote:FYI - there are only 11 weight divisions for male boxers.pound per pound wrote: Thanks for this update. It is early. USA Boxing has done things like that without following their own rules. It has had lawsuits filed against it in the past and probably will again in the future.boxmel wrote:What a total and absolute bummer! What happened to the quarters and the semis? Yuck!

Russell has the toughest bout of the 4 Americans today. However, I think he will win. Raynell Williams will also win today as he should have his easiest bout of the tournament so far.
Molina and Estrada both have tough bouts and I'm hopeful that they will both win.
Can we go 4 for 4 today and get all 4 in the Olympics?

Go to http://www.aiba.org/ and you can watch the scoring live on the internet. You can also get the brackets at http://worldboxingchicago.org/.
I knew Williams would have an easy win and he did getting an RSCO victory. Russell pulled out the win as predicted. I wasn't sure about Molina and Estrada. Molina probably showed his youth against a more mature, stronger boxer. Javier will bounce back and improve. I think he will get qualified at one of the two Americas qualifiers as he is skilled enough. I just wish he could mature a lot in the next year.Dennis wrote:Russell has the toughest bout of the 4 Americans today. However, I think he will win. Estrada lost on a tie-breaker, which is as close as you can get and still lose. The shame is that if it had been paper scoring, he would have won a 3-2 split decision. Those are tough ones to lose. My son lost two bouts on tie-breakers that he would have won if they had been decided on paper-scoring. All that told us was that you have to improve and make sure that you do better so that it isn't so close in the future.
Shawn was losing after two rounds and then won the next two to bring it to a tie. He didn't get any warnings either so he is improving. He too will get qualified at one of the two Americas qualifiers.
