Froch v Reid

Post by whiskey »

Nipped into the press conference today.

Must be said, it's the first time i'd heard Robin Reid talk at length and he was friendly, open and elaborated on a lot of things, including his loss to Lacy and the events leading to that night in the States which weren't ideal prep. The training facility was only the tip of the iceberg.

He acknowledged Froch was a big hitter, but that he'd been in with the likes of Henry Wharton etc who could all dig and he'd took their shots.

He said his preparation had gone very well, with Michael Jennings providing a lot of sparring (at that point apologising to Mike, who'd been cut during the training)

His main message, was that people should concentrate on his achievements in boxing and not dwell on the Lacy loss as that what not a true indication of his current ability. He likened his sharpness and fitness to the period he'd fought Ottke & Magee and was confident his 'excellent' plan for Friday would see him as the victor - And that Friday was his bonfire night and that he would be letting off the fireworks!

Looking forward to this one.......

With Froch being out for a while he may well be a bit rusty in the first couple of rounds - a chance for Reid maybe?

I smell an upset....... :box:

There is a chance of an upset if anyone can expose the flaws in froch's style that Max won't stop banging on about then its someone as experianced as Reid.

Howeve I think froch is class and will do it, sadly he will not get the credit he would deserve by winning this fight cos so many see it as a for gone conclusion.

Anyone else think Mick Hennessy is putting on weight!

Reid doesn't have the workrate these days to win this one. Even during his heyday he was pretty economical with his shots.

One of the most over rated fighters ever by Britains. Never saw the attraction - never looked world class. Best performance was undoubtedly against an aging and always limited Henry Wharton - he did look class that night, but he should have lost vs Cherifi and then did vs Malinga (who was pretty finished at that stage). The manner of 3 of his defeats (Branco, Malinga and Lacy) were pretty damanging also.

The Calzaghe performance, which is pushing 10 years ago, is one of the only things that is keeping him amazingly in the British top #3. Calzaghe's problems prior to that fight have been well documented.

Froch vs. Reid should be a forgone conclusion. If it's not, then Froch needs to think long and hard about his career as a top-flight boxer.

Why Reid's only losses in the last 5 fights have been for world titles one of which was a total robbery. Its not prime reid in there probably but it'd be stupid to say he doesn't have a chance with another good fighter. He'll also be less rusty than he was vs Brinkley

Don't really see the point in talking up Reid - For me this match is pointless, and shows how Froch's career is stalling.

Exactly, pointless match, no win situation for Froch. Holds zero interest for me. Shame becuase I liked Reid and he seems a decent guy but he's well past his best now and god help us if he's saying that he's as fired up for this one as he was for Brian Magee. What a classic that was!

I dunno, this could be a banana for Froch.

Reid is past his best but his smaller stocky stance might just be awkard for taller Froch.

Reid can bang.

If Reid is hungry then who knows?

In fairness he's coming back after a serious knee operation and is using this as a tune-up for the imminent BIGGER fights

Reid's best punch is the right hand, which is the one shot Froch is most open to. I can't see a Reid win, but hopefully he'll give Froch a few little wake-up calls about leaving his left so low, which will help him when he moves up.

Not really. He's been out the ring 8 months, had a serious knee injury. This is a good warm up fight and Reid is still a name people recognise. I think this was a decent bit of match making.

Maybe Bute is a couple bouts. I'd love that.

Agree with Oliverfennell, Reid can knock walls down with his overhand right, and it's true to say, Carl seems to have a problem defending against these. An upset is a possibility, but Reid has to want to get hold of the British title, not try to piss about and spoil his way through.

The thing is, when the opponent does want to get serious with Froch, he's never been found wanting in the pros ranks yet. Robins only chance is a one punch knockout.

Froch has the ability to win in a number of ways. I 'm hoping for a class display from Carl.

I just think that Reids best days are behind him and don't see what this fight will offer Carl. Carl is really stagnating, he blazed onto the scene, won the commonwealth title in his 14th fight then a series of untested fights have followed with maybe the exception of Magee. He continually calls out the top SMW but hasn't fought anyone in the top 10 or even the top 20 of the WBC rankings.

Surely a tune up against a ranked fighter or someone in the top 20 would have been better than Reid?

I worry that when he steps up and gets dragged into the trenches and gets hit back he'll crumble and we've lost another prospect.

he beat Nardiello away from home, won a cracker vs Wharton, beat a smaller guy in a wild, exciting fight (whose name I don't remember) and dropped Magee a # of times & was robbed vs Ottke. On the other hand, some poor showings, vs Lacy, Malinga, Cherifi, and has done little of recent. No one's saying he was great, but he was a worthy fighter in his day.

Well comming back from an injury not a bad fight and it ain't just Magee who's class on his record Barney is certainly a difficult boxer to beat having just been robbed of a European title at the weight above.

Hopefuly he wins and is back soon, Reid being experianced may teach froch something as has been mentioned above. Why are people so down on this fight as a come back from injury?

Beat Vincenzo Nardiello in a fight in which he was legitimately losing (or level) before the stoppage. Says alot I'm afraid. Nardiello was a bottler and pretty damn poor. One of the worst world champions I have ever seen.

I don't think the Wharton fight was a cracker, but it was a good performance - but Wharton wasn't world class. Petrious was tough, but never world class also. A world class fighter shouldn't have any problems with these two.

Needed to score a few KD's vs Magee to win the fight - again, speaks alot IMO.
