John Murray
John Murray
Impressed with the offensive way John Murray went about his business against Dean Hickman this evening. Also impressed with the improving defence.
A slight concern - Murray hit Hickman with some massive shots - when Murray steps up a level I question his punch power - When Murray steps up he will need to put fighters of a higher class who can take a shot onto the back foot - my concern is if he does not being a fighter who likes to consistently come forward what he will do when he has to fight on the back foot.
Jon Thaxton in my view is going to be a very interesting fight indeed - one in which I have Thaxton a slight favourite.

Re: John Murray
Really impressed with Murray today, your slight concern has been my major concern from the off. However, today he hit and hurt Hickman. Okay, Hickmans been hurt in the past, but Murray looked physically stronger than I have seen him previously - perhaps his power is coming.Albert wrote:Impressed with the offensive way John Murray went about his business against Dean Hickman this evening. Really good performance.

I don't think Murray will ever be a huge hitter but he has a relentless style similar to Hatton and has now stopped his last couple. He looked superb tonight and against a real tough nut in Hickman who gave much more than say Scott Lawton offered against Khan. Murray vs Thaxton would be a barnstormer. Really impressed with John tonight. Gary Reid would be another decent name for him to take out meantime and that would be another cracking little fight.
Murray's whole thing is breaking ppl down piece by piece. This, I feel, was his first opponent who really came in with sustained attacks. Some picked Hickman. But I believed in Murray, that he'd put it together. Really chopped his man down. Terrific arsenal of punches.
I hope he goes for British and Euro titles. He's ready for Thaxton and IMO isn't too far off being ready for Romanov.
Murray's PRO STYLE will serve him very well, as he adds to his game, at higher levels.

John's coach PM'd me that they're looking to give John the main event of the Garden Arena warm-up on December 7th to make sure it's ready for the 8th.Terry D wrote:Murray is catching more shots on his gloves and deflecting them away from his chin.
Course he is going to get hit, he is a proper professional fighter not a dancing amateur type. After a slow start he looked like the prospect we all know he is and Hickman looked like he was having a really tough time.
Praise is due to Hickman for taking those rib shots on the ropes. You have to respect that as they were corkers.
Hopefully they get John a spot in Vegas.
The THaxton fight is the easiest fight to make. Mick made some very good points recently about Warren not stepping up to the plate and matching a prospect (Froch) with a Champion (Calzaghe) so how about a little consistency? Surely not making a fight between two of your own fighters would dilute the original fury of your points? Thaxton-Murray, why not have it?
They did the same thing when I saw ODH v Mayweather and it draws decent sized cards, with some decent fighters. So if anyone is going to Vegas, the night before is worth checking out as well. Tickets were really cheap ($25 to $150 for ringside I think) in May. I'd recommend it, especially if you cannot get tickets for the 8th just to say you've seen a fight there.
I like that he can throw a right hook to the face. this punch has been edged out of the textbook, something mike mccallum laments. like povetkin, murray can get good leverage on a right hook. can can throw the right long (as a cross) or short (as a hook) depending what position his feet are in. great prospect; can't wait for him vs thaxton. he'll do better than meager did. should be a good fight.
definitely the performance that Murray fans like myself have been looking for.

ppl seem to throw them so seldom these days. it's usually the straihgt right. trainers at gyms i sent to as a kid warned ppl not to throw 'em from orthodox. mike mccallum, who now works as a trainer, complains about this.rhino222 wrote:a right hook to the face has been edged out ??where on earth did you drag that stat from..75% of KO's come from right hands to the face from orthodox stance fighters !!
first time I ever seen John Murray which is weird as his name has been doing the rounds for a while now.
thought he looked good and picks punches well.
sorry to go off topic for a minute but anyone think a thread on Paul Ingle would be a good idea......I don't really know how or who is allowed to start a thread, there might have even been one a month or so ago I don't remember .......I saw some highlights of his benefit evening last night on Sky

spot on... if you can get the angle round the outside of their left you bring the back hand closer to the headTerry D wrote:I think there is a difference between a roundhouse right and a right hook. Yuo seldom see a proper right hook. A step and then bringing it around the outside like a proper hook.
Hatton's body shots are hooks when he steps and goes to the right, the right Lewis tucked Tyson away with was an roundhouse right.
It is double-hard to throw a hook off your back hand and for it still to be a proper hook.
ok, that means there is a difference between a roundhouse right and a straight right as well then. you don't see too many ppl throw a good right with a nice curve to it, that gets round an opponent's guard. Hopkins uses one nicely to fight southpaws, or did when he had better reflexes. Povetkin has a clubbing right hand that can be hard to read, but which worked a treat on Byrd when he leaned to his own left.
IMO, I see a right hook as a punch not where you pull/twist the punch sideways (where you probably miss your opponent & pull yourself off balance), but shoot the right forward before adding the twist on it after. I just call it a hook, because it's like a hook adapted for the rear hand.

Would rather see Murray in the ring with Khan than Earl to be honest.
Think he's about the only other fighter other than thaxton in this country who would give khan problems.
And if we see a Murray v Thaxton fight WOW ! that would be a war!

I was impressed with Murray on Friday night. He mixed punches between head and body, was calm and patient and I was also impressed with the spaces he found in Hickman's tight guard to land with those short uppercuts in the second and third rounds.
He did a job on Deano, who told me afterwards that he should have been allowed to carry on. I thought the same, though there was only going to be one winner.
Hickman took his lumps (well, he was a street fighter in his younger, wilder days), tried to fight back and he had some success in the opening round with some fast-handed one-twos.
Deano gave it a go, came up short but has a future at lightweight and a rubber match with Gary Reid may happen now that Deano has found what he thinks to be his optimum weight.
